Explanation of Face Recognition in CCTV Cameras and The Application

Protecting your home or business is getting easier by the day, thanks to CCTV cameras. We have advanced from just knowing that someone is invading your space to Artificial Intelligence (AI) letting you know and see the face of the intruder. Building a database of faces

The first step is to create a database of familiar faces. These are face’s that your CCTV needs to recognize when they show up and (not) raise any alarm. You do this by uploading the pictures of these faces to the CCTV camera or the backend NVR/XVR Server. Another way is to select the captured face images from the CCTV system and import these to the database. Most model facial recognition CCTV cameras can remember between 10,000 and 50,000 faces.

Detecting and matching faces

CCTV cameras with facial recognition detect and match faces to your database using various techniques. Some of these include 3D modeling, video-based recognition, artificial intelligence approach, among others. These techniques compare then analyze any faces the CCTV camera captures in both video or still images. 

To do this, the camera will compare some facial features of the captured image against those in your database. These features include pose, size, shape, as well as illumination. Once the CCTV acquires the image, it will compare to images in the database using certain software.

CCTV cameras with face recognition features use both the sequential and parallel concepts. The sequential concept includes detecting the face, resizing the image to a standard size, enhancing the quality using filters, converting the image to a compatible format, then uploading the image to the database. The parallel concept, on the other hand, uploads the image and getting the face features are done simultaneously.  

Sending notification

The facial recognition CCTV cameras can send alerts under these senarios: 1) Face is recognized after comparing against the databases. These can either be the white-listed database or black-listed database; 2) Face is not recognized in the databases at all. Depending on your setting, the authorities can also be notified automatically via email, mobile app push notification and other means once the CCTV detects an intruder. 

Application of face recognition features in CCTV Cameras

Many surveillance manufacturers are integrating the facial recognition features in their CCTVs. Dahua, for example, uses this feature for a wide range of Starlight Face Recognition Camera. The camera uses the Vision Processor Unit (VPU), a state-of-the-art feature that recognizes and compares facial features in real-time. Also, it does not require any external database to work.

The camera can categorize individuals based on features like age, expressions, gender, facial hair, or even if one has glasses.

In this ever-growing world of video surveillance, there are no other brands more famous and reputable than Dahua and Hikvision. If you, as a customer, have just started researching the numerous surveillance options available in the market, you are bound to end up shortlisting both the aforementioned brands. And that is when you might just behold a dead end before you. It really is difficult to pick one of the two.

Generally speaking, both Dahua and Hikvision are very popular in the market. 1) Use your PC, open the web browser – Chrome, Firefox, Sarafi, etc.

How to Use Hikvision’s Hik-Connect in iVMS-4500

What is Hikvision Hik-Connect

Hik-Connect is free P2P service provided by Hikvision. The purpose of the service is to allow your mobile devices or PC to easily communicate with Hikvision products, such IP Camera, NVR, DVR, etc.

P2P, or Peer to Peer is a network protocol used by IP devices and software application to establish the communication without the need to do any port forwarding at the firewall. In addition, Dynamic DNS will not be required either due to the nature of peer-to-peer connection.

How to Use Hikvision Hik-Connect in iVMS-4500

If you have purchased the Hikvision IP Camera, NVR, or DVR, and would like to find out how to use Hikvision Hik-Connect in iVMS-4500, you can refer to the below step-by-step guide with the screenshots to set it up. Let’s get started now!

1. Download the iVMS-4500

Get the iVMS-4500. Go to the “App Store”, or “Play Market”, download the app: iVMS-4500. These are the links: iVMS-4500 on App Store; iVMS-4500 on Google Play Store

2. Enable the Hik-Connect Service at the Hikvision’s Device

By default, the Hik-Connect service at all the Hikvision’s products are turned off. You will need to turn it on before you can use it. We will use Hikvision IP Camera DS-2143G0-I as an example to show you how to enable the service.

Login the IP Camera with the web browser (If you don’t know how to do that and if you are our existing customer, please contact us to get support). Go to “Configuration” -> “Network” -> “Advanced Settings” -> “Platform Access”. Tick the “Enable”. Set a verification code as instructed. Please do remember the verification code you have set, as we are going to need it in a while. When you have done the setting, click “Save” to effect the changes.

3. Register or Login to Hik-Connect Service

Open your iVMS-4500 on your iPhone or Android Phone, click the top left corner, followed by clicking “Hik-Connect”.

You will see the login page of Hik-Connect service. Click “Login“.

If you have registered, please login here; if you haven’t registered with the service before, click “Register” to register an account by following the onscreen instructions.

4. Add the Hikvision Device to Hik-Connect

After you have logged in the Hik-Connect service, you will need to add your Hikvision Device to the Hik-Connect to start using the service. Click the “+” icon on the top right corner. You will see the barcode scanning function now, just scan the barcode of the Hikvision device to add it to the Hik-Connect service. Alternatively, you can also manually add the serial number.

Now you should be able to see the serial number of the Hikvision device you are trying to add. Click “Search” now. Once you can see the device’s model number with the serial number, that means your Hikvision device is already available to be added. Click the “+” icon now.

You will now be asked to enter the verification code – this is the code you have set in Step 2. Enter it now.

5. View the Hikvision Device in Hik-Connect with iVMS-4500

After you have entered the correct verification code, you will see the list of the Hikvision devices which are already in the Hik-Connect service. Click the device now

Click “Start Live View” to watch the live view. You will now be asked to enter the verification code again. Please do it now.

While the width can only have two sizes (19 or 23 inches, the first one being the standard and most common), the height increases by a rate of 1.75 inches, and this quantity is called rack unit or just “U”. That said, it is possible to understand the notation used for server rack sizing: 1U, 2U, 3U and so on.

For example, a 9U rack has a width of 19 inches (for a standard rack) and a height of 15.75 inches (1.75 multiplied by 9). The size of the rack will depend on several factors, starting with the size and type of business activity of the company, which will determine the real needs regarding the number of devices for networking, communications, or any other applications.

Evidently, the needs of a small retail shop will be different from those of a telecommunications company or a small office.

Categorization of Server Racks

Server racks can be classified according to many features but the most usual is to categorize them by size.  We have grouped them into three general categories, considering the area of application.

1U to 12U Server Racks

These rack sizes have common usage in IT applications. They can vary depending on each specific case, where space, traffic and other conditions must be taken into account.

Smaller racks, usually ranging from 1U up to 6U are used for low height installations that count with some kind of anchoring for wall mounting or for that equipment that can be placed on the ground. These are often found in telecommunication applications as well as monitoring equipment.
