rochelle huffs a breath out through her nose , a bitter little laugh catching in her throat as she leans slightly into claire’s touch—not enough to seem needy , just enough to acknowledge it . fingers twitch against the grip of her submachine gun , the safety already off . she’s trying not to grind her teeth .

" little bit ain’t enough time to fix how fucked this all is , " rochelle mutters , eyes flicking toward the barred window as thunder grumbles low in the distance . " but i'll take it . "

she pulls away gently , running both hands down her jeans to wipe the clammy sweat off her palms . posture’s tight—shoulders squared , jaw clenched—but her voice stays low , steady .

" i thought savannah was bad , but this ? feels like déjà vu with more teeth . "

OUT OF EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW , claire is begging the weather gods to not let it rain. but there is a loose strand of hair falling in and out of her eyes simply because the wind is vicious -- A STORM IS BREWING . nothing like a horrendous downpour to really tie together the fact they are now surviving another outbreak. AGAIN .

claire's hand reaches up to cradle rochelle's jawline , mostly just to take a look to see if everything is good -- she just pauses. CLAIRE'S HEAD TURNS TO SWIVEL TOWARDS THE DOOR . then slowly turns back to the one window in the room. they're still relatively secure for now. that window has bars , that door is heavy metal. IT'S SORT OF A SAFE ROOM . until they leave.
