Essay 3 Online Source
Another possible source for essay 3.
In “Social Media Use and Adolescent Mental Health: Finding From the UK Millennium Cohort Study”, the authors evaluate whether social media use and adolescents’ depressive symptoms are associated and the possible explanations for these links. To examine these associations, data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study on over 10,000 14-year-olds was used. The results showed that social media use was associated with experiences of online harassment, self-image and self-esteem happiness, and sleep hours, delay, and disruption. The study found that girls were more likely to experience most of these and reported more hours of social media use compared to boys. These factors related to social media use were shown to be strongly associated with “internalizing symptoms” and depressive symptom scores. The study found a direct association between social media use and depressive symptoms, and exhibited that girls with higher social media use at the beginning of adolescence had poorer mental well-being years after.
This source directly relates to the topic I am considering for essay three, which is the negative effects social media has on adolescent’s and young adult’s mental health. The paper specifically offers thorough research on the association between social media use and depressive symptoms and include the factors that explain this finding. It provides reliable research and statistics to use for essay 3.

Essay 3 Online Source
A possible source for essay 3.
“Technology can have a positive and negative impact on social interactions”, an excerpt from Dimensions of Leisure for Life by Human Kinetics, acknowledges how technology and social media can have both positive and negative impacts on social life and social skills. Society is approaching the need to redefine accepted behaviors in regards to digital interaction. Social networking sites have enabled people to keep in touch, but have led to the rise of internet addictions and have negative effects like divorce, loss of employment, and manifestation of narcissism. Although this is true, online communities have helped people overcome a sense of isolation and connect with people who are similar. Studies have also shown that there are negative social impacts, such as aggression, of some video games. Video games can also bring enjoyment when playing with other people. Watching television, for a limited amount of time, can also strengthen friendships and families. Though, other people believe that television compromises the social values in the United States and has major effects on people’s social skills. The type of television viewed can also have effects on people’s social lives, such as being prone to mimicking the bad behaviors portrayed on some of television.
This source relates to the topic I am considering for essay three because it is all about the effects technology and social media have on society, which is exactly my topic. It specifically focuses on social networking sites, video games, and television. It is also a reliable source, as the textbook is authored by Human Kinetics based on the contributions of many different doctors and other educated individuals.

Essay 3 Topics
A possible topic I could pursue in Essay 3 (the research paper) is the effect of new technology and social media on society. Social media is a vital part of any business, as humans must communicate to get work done. Technological advances have also revolutionized the way we do things but have also created problems. For example, a somewhat controversial topic is the control of time that children spend with technology. Some people believe it is very beneficial while many others believe it has many negative impacts. This topic is very interesting to me and it would be useful for the field of work I am going into, concerning online marketing etc.

“The End of Courtship”
Reporter Alex Williams states in “The End of Courtship” that technology is the reason courtship has ended because it has made charm unnecessary and has transformed ‘dates’ into simply hanging out or meeting at the bars. This is due to the limits of solely texting as communication as well as the rise of the “hookup culture” among young people. Texting, Twitter, and forms of communication like these have removed the need for charm as it is not conveyed through these. Online dating services reinforce the casual dating, given there are many possible dates, and therefore make cheap and very casual dates necessary. Internet stalking has also made the first date feel void because a person is able to learn most of the important things about another online. Lastly, women have become increasingly more powerful and the median economic status for them is higher than most men. This makes casual dating where the stakes are lower ideal, as this can avoid any offense or stereotypes in men’s selections of dates or presents as everyone is trying to establish a successful career.
I prefer this article over the other two because it acknowledges that technology is the main contributor to the end of courtship and the current “hookup culture” rather than the people themselves. Of course we are to blame for participating in and supporting this culture, technology has abolished courtship. Growing up with all this technology, many young people do not know how to properly date and get out of this culture. Technology has changed relationships as we know it and I believe a major contributor to this is the online dating sites and apps, which make it easy to go from person to person looking for the right one. Because people sometimes have many options, they are weary of spending money and time on someone that things could potentially not work out with. Overall, I agree with almost all the points made throughout the article and I believe it is less offensive to the younger generation.

A Summary of “The Cult of Overwork”
James Surowiecki, in “The Cult of Overwork”, informs that financial analysts have been expected to work over 75 hours a week for many, many years, but large companies on Wall Street are changing this expectation. A study has shown that employees at large investment banks have spent up to 120 hours per week on the job, partially due to lack of boundaries created by the 24/7 nature of technology. The trend of being paid well but working long hours is not exclusive to Wall Street, it is happening to many workers according to a 2008 study. The known effects of being overworked are that people become less efficient and less effective after a certain point- in the fourth year of work for many bankers. The economics behind having an employee work longer hours rather than hiring a second employee show that it is cheaper to have one employee work long hours, but time is an easy metric to measure how productive someone is. One of the reasons why the expectation of working long hours has stuck for so long is because it is how the way the people in charge were trained- habit is difficult to break. Even if the rules are changed regarding how many hours and what days workers can work, there still needs to be a change in culture- specifically relating to expectations.

Autobiography
Hello! My name is Lexi Abrahamson and I am a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. I was able to do PSEO at Normandale Community College during my junior and senior year of high school and at UWRF I am majoring in Marketing Communications. I am from Mound, Minnesota, and have lived there my entire life. My favorite animal is most definitely a dog, but I also do love quokkas and hope that someday I will be able to see one in person. Growing up near Lake Minnetonka, I love to go out on the boat during the summer, spend time with family and friends, play with my dog, sing, and play tennis. I played tennis all throughout middle and high school and love being outside and active. In addition, I love to travel and look forward to going to many new places in the future. I went on four mission trips during high school to San Francisco, California; Les Cayes, Haiti; Perryville, Arkansas; and Moundsville, West Virginia. Going on these mission trips have helped me realize the impact of community service and learning about other cultures. One of the most important things to me is spending time with family and friends and I am extremely excited because I have a second niece on the way in addition to my five-year-old niece!
