Viral Interventions: Mel Chin QCQ Quote: “This project is about transformation on many different levels. You’re taking what is being considered of no value and of shame and saying “No, it has value, but it has another kind of value, another life” Comment: I decided to choose this quote specifically cause it highlights the potential power of art. It has the ability to change perceptions and transform itself from something worthless to meaningful. By giving abandoned spaces new purpose, it goes to further prove that art isn’t just an aesthetic but rather an innovation to be engaged with. This concept reminds me of the personal aspect of a transformation in our lives, although overlooked, changing your perspective can really further your journey in life, both as a student and an artist. Question: Have you ever experienced art that’s considered valueless? Do you think art can help reshape a persons perception in ‘value’?

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: Idea #1

This idea is a concept for a sculpture. It features three pillars, each representing a different social issue that politicians have recently sought to change such as abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration. The pillars are broken but still standing, symbolizing the fragile state of these rights. There are chains surrounding the pillars which is meant to show the oppression and restrictions these laws face. The abortion pillar includes a broken uterus alongside medical tools to highlight the consequences of restricted access to abortion. The LGBTQ+ pillar features a cut up, fading pride flag. The immigration pillar is shows a burning passport to represent the challenges faced by immigrants.

Viral Interventions HW #1: PRESENT
Sentence: What the politician banned is diminishing our control.
Statement: For our Viral Inventions group project, we decided on the words “politician,” “banned,” “control,” and “diminishing.” Our sentence was “What the politician banned is diminishing our control.” This is meant to reflect the recent removal or alteration of laws that are limiting the freedoms we once had. For our performative gesture, we decided to write down our sentence in front of FIU’s Law building. We believed that using this location would help amplify our message by including the legal and political systems. By writing the sentence in front, using charcoal, we hope to draw attention to the ongoing changes in laws and policies that are diminishing our control.
