Project 2-Equity
Objective:
The main project idea was to create postcards to uplift elders  in nursing homes. Create an interesting card. Ensure legibility,  Elders cannot read as easily as we can. Create fun and dynamic cards that can be interactive to the viewer.  Use questions, storytelling, or creative activities for prompts.
Description:
While also creating a compelling interactive piece of art that also comes up with a creative prompt for the elders to interact during times of quarantine. Trying to uplift their spirits while this time period can cause severe loneliness and isolation. All DVC students at UWM will have this collection of postcards shared throughout nursing homes for them to pick and choose artworks they enjoy.
Rationale:
I feel that I chose compelling topics and interactions for the elders. I went along different routes and different ideas. There are two that have compelling and interactive type which I find to be great and interesting to look at. I took a focus on music because of the benefits that it has for dementia patients. I then chose a creative floral art piece that is pleasing illustratively. My mural card reminds me of stained glass. I love allowing the elders to be able to interact with their own choice of colors!

Final Reflection
Final Reflection
I am going to start off with my weakest card. My mural card. I really struggled with this idea of a mural card. That was not easy for me to picture how to create a prompt and an image to go along with it. I feel that the card I created is good but it could definitely be better. This was the card idea that I felt least interested in so I did not work on it as much as compared to the others because I loved them more and they were where I wanted my attention to which is type. My card with the floral design I think is so cute and I would love to see it colored in! I loved that floral design from the beginning. It is a flower that I usually draw when I am bored doodling. And I am finally using it in a design. This was a last minute addition so it did not go through many revisions. The next one is the blue type one that has been with me from the start. I love this design and I have from the beginning. It is tough to read due to the fact that I am not a professional letterist. It is funky in some parts and is not perfect. I created a black outline to boost legibility and it really makes the card pop! Top favorite of mine. Next is CHA CHA CHA and I can't help but find this one so cute and space like. The background is a flat piece of paint and it has hints of the texture and the digital type. I was able to learn a new tool during this and I feel that I really made it work. A second favorite! In the end I really felt that I created some compelling works of art and I cannot wait to share them. I hope they really enjoy seeing them even if they do not choose mine in particular! This project really helped me teach myself more about type and sharpen a weak spot I felt I had.

Pre Final Reflection
Pre final reflection
I feel pretty confident with the designs that I have made. I added in a last minute card that has this floral pattern that I made from the beginning that I wanted to incorporate somehow. I spent most of my time working on that one. I feel like my cards have a variety to them. There is a floral card, hand lettering print, and a digital lettering. I feel that I really adventured out and created 3 different type of looks. I am happy that I mainly stuck to type art because I feel that type is my weakest point in my design journey and I want to do everything to improve that aspect. I feel that I could have created a great illustration but type is my weak point that I need to work on personally. I feel really successful and I feel that I thought myself a lot through focusing on type for this project. I did have to make some final adjustments to my type images which is expected. I am still learning. I feel after my adjustments I LOVE THEM.

Midterm Reflection
Midterm Reflection
I felt pretty lost on where I wanted to go with my postcard because this is a type class and we have to be really cautious on the type that we use. We have to be careful with exploration of type. I am unsure about whether or not to stay strongly towards type or adventure towards illustration for a type class. I immediately thought of the idea of music and how it impacts patients with dementia. I found this amazing documentary and it flourished my idea. I loved the idea of working with lino blocks and creating prints of my text design to move beyond the computer. I found that creating a type that is legible beyond my eyesight is pretty tough. I have to make sure that my hand lettering is large enough and able to see if I squint my eyes. I then thought about colors that I wanted to try. I find that I usually stick to a pretty blue color palette and I want to explore beyond the color blue.

Fiction writed and art advanced for teaching. She had older friends so she connected with the elders.
Could art help more severe disabilities. Doesnt draw on memory. no wrong answers. large contrast. bigger shapes. easier to make out. too busy they can get lost. solo guided ideas. do not want to be treated like a child. play is important.

Research I created my essay about
Engagement in a time of Quarentine
“What is something beautiful to you”
“thinking of you”
Whats the latest on why and how creativity works-Time Slips
Attitudes and Engagement
TS facilities more engagement and more alert
Medical students attitudes
storytelling programs improved students and residents attitudes
improves qualitiy of life
with mild and moderate dimentia
laughter transends all levels of dementia. those with severe dementia experience less formal pleasure
Communication in mid late stages
Play and joy- art based approaches
Friend Cole- Works at a nursing home. residents stay in their rooms at all times. they miss walks and their families. no longer social dining this was social interation for a lot of them.
daily caring- website dedicated to senior health music for seniors. reduce pain, blood pressure, help post stroke recovery, improve memory, improve sleep, improve mood/decrease depression, boost immune system, prevent siezure. play music from their youth.
CDC- covid stress coping- take deep breaths, stretch, meditate. make time to unwind. talk about your concerns.
Documentary- Alive inside -dementia and music. Neil Armstrong took one lady back to her child hood and she told a story that she didn’t remeber before hearing the song that brought this memory. Henry’s dementia requires him to need full assistance. he doesnt talk just mumbles. with song he began to sing. needed to be asked yes or no questions. difficult at this time to request music over medicine.
