She doesn’t mean to stare. In fact, she’s largely unaware she’s doing it. Her face is a blank canvas; except for the eyes, which—as always—seem to give her away. Melfina is lost in her thoughts, the pinch of her brows evidence that, whatever is on her mind, is obviously troubling her, yet she can’t quite bring herself to voice her thoughts, unsure how to articulate what she’s thinking. Or if she even wants to.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears as her feet pounded against the pavement. Melfina frantically looked over her shoulder to see if she was still being followed, and though she didn’t see anyone just yet, she knew they were on her heels. Pirates, they’d called themselves. She didn’t know what they wanted with her or why they were chasing her—in fact, Melfina didn’t know a lot of anything. All she knew was that the feeling in her gut told her not to trust them, that they had bad intentions, and so she’d done the only thing she could think of. She ran.
Casting a look over her shoulder again, she missed someone stepping out into the street. She turned back around just in time to smack right into them, sending her flying backwards on her heels with a cry of shock. Whoever they were, they were sturdy enough that it felt as though she’d run right into a brick wall. Her thoughts swam and it took her a second to regain her bearings. ❝I-I’m sorry!❞ she says, mildly distracted as her eyes scan the area in a panic. Where was she going to go? She couldn’t outrun them forever.
It’s only then she finally gets a good look at who she’d run into. Tall, blond, a pauldron strapped over one shoulder. She could see a large blade jutting out from behind him over the other shoulder. Was he some kind of fighter? Melfina didn’t have long to think about it, ❝Please—I need your help!❞ She could only hope this stranger was the noble sort. ❝I-I’m being followed; I don’t know where to go!❞

Starwind & Hawking was quiet, for once. In a very fortunate turn of events, there’d been a decent bounty put up for a group of up-and-coming pirates. Jim had been all too eager to take on the job, having spent the last three days badgering Gene about their debts, and so he’d dragged the older male along with him out the door, promising Melfina they’d be back later with a reward to show for it.
That had been about three hours ago and there still hadn’t been any word from either Jim or Gene—but Melfina wasn’t too concerned. She knew the boys could handle themselves, and if things got sticky, well, she was certain Gene would come up with some hair-brained scheme to get out of it. At least, that’s what she told herself.
In the meantime though, she’d set about tidying up the place. Despite the fact that Jim had pressed she wasn’t their maid and didn’t need to go to such lengths, Melfina enjoyed the job—it made her feel useful beyond just navigating the Outlaw Star; made her feel… more human. After she’d finished cleaning up the kitchen, she set her towel down and turned to Aeris.
Aeris had been the newest addition to their entourage, and Melfina was thrilled to have another girl around. Much as she loved Gene and Jim’s company, and was forever grateful to both of them for promising to help her figure out her past, there was just something nice about having another female around. Someone she could relate to more—at least, she tried to.
❝Say—what do you think about going to explore the city? This is your first time visiting another planet, right? There’s bound to be lots you’ll want to see.❞

She had a bag of groceries tucked under one arm and the other extended towards Chibi Chibi, holding the toddler by the hand. On their quest for the Galactic Leyline, they’d made a stop on Heifong to re-supply, make repairs and recuperate before they drifted off again towards their next destination. Melfina hadn’t lost hope yet that Gene would find the answers she was looking for about the Leyline, and what it had to do with her—what it had to do with who she was—but it’d be a lie to say she wasn’t beginning to show concern that maybe Gene wouldn’t be able to keep his promise, not because she didn’t trust him; but because perhaps there was simply nothing for them to find.
This melancholic mood must have bled through her expression, because a moment later, Melfina felt a tug on her hand. She glanced down at the toddler, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
❝Thank you for coming with me,❞ Melfina squeezed her little hand tight. ❝With how busy things have been lately, we’ve been running low on food. Do you like your lollipop?❞ Of course, Melfina hadn’t failed to buy Chibi Chibi something sweet—Gene had made it pretty clear the toddler had decimated their sugar supply.

She draws him closer, eyes half-lidded and terribly fond. Melfina isn't so shy anymore. She knows who she is, what her purpose is. So maybe it isn't so surprising that she takes matters into her own hands, drawing up on her tiptoes until they're centimetres apart. When she speaks, it isn't a question. It isn't laced with uncertainty. She smiles; a soft, teasing gesture. "---吻我。"
Watching Melfina had been like watching a flower bloom.
She’d been so small, so unsure of herself, often curling inward whenever she felt insecure or lacked the answer to a question. She’d always curled away and Gene had found himself positioning himself around her, shielding her, while she tried her hardest to stand in the sunlight and grow. Getting the answers to her identity, her memories, her purpose—it had done wonders for her, as if she’d suddenly exploded into shape and colour, blossoming before his very eyes. With every passing day she became more sure of herself, more secure in her identity, more playful and teasing. Her smile was genuine, growing wider and wider with every rising of the sun on the horizon, her laughter more breathtaking with each setting of the moon.
He’s so proud of her. So proud of who she’s become, who she will be, of what she’s done for herself. He’d promised he would find out who she was, answer all of her questions for her, and the end result is so dazzling that Gene has trouble looking at her most days. She shimmers in the sunlight, her smile bright enough to strike him blind, her eyes filled with mirth and joy and everything he’d ever wanted for her. Seeing the confidence in her stride, the steel in her spine, the laughter painted on her lips like fine rouge… Gene feels like she’s every bit deserving of the butterfly imagery the Leyline had attributed to her. She’d changed completely, from caterpillar to butterfly—a stunning metamorphosis of the heart.
She was always beautiful, but Gene has never been more in love with her than he is in this exact moment.
His arms move on instinct to cradle her smaller form to his chest, chin tilting down in immediate compliance as she wraps her own arms around his shoulders and lifts onto the tips of her toes. When she stops just shy of kissing him, her whisper dancing across his lips and her mouth a mere breath away from his own, a soft and wholly genuine smile twists his lips. His heart aches in his chest, a soft feeling that leaves him breathless as he gazes down at the woman in his arms—the only woman he ever wants in them again. The only woman in his heart.
❛ Say it again… ❜ Fondness laces his words, his eyes half-lidded as he murmurs against her lips, a ghost of a kiss passing between them. He knows what she’s asking for, knows exactly what she wants from him, but he’s never thought any language could be as sexually charged as Melfina seems capable of making her words seem. Keeping one arm wound around her waist and tugging her ever closer to him, Gene’s other hand reaches up to entangle his fingers in her hair at the base of her neck, angling her head up so that he can brush the skin of his lips against her own with another whisper.
❛ say it again. ❜
