Some fun facts regarding real life Nakahara Chuuya
According to the book “文豪どうかしてる逸話集,” one time when Nakahara Chuuya got drunk, he went to Dazai Osamu’s house and cursed “moron! moron!” in front of his face. Dazai’s reaction to this sudden abuse is said to be hiding under his blanket and cried.
(real life Nakahara Chuuya)
Tumblr media
When the Blue Flower Club went drinking, Chuuya got drunk and started harassing Dazai, saying: “ Why the hell do your face looks like a flying blue mackerel? What kind of flower do you like anyway?” Dazai, with trembling voice, answered: “Peach Blossom,” to which Chuuya replied: “ Tch, that’s why you suck.”
(real life Dazai Osamu)
Tumblr media
Since Chuuya had this tendency to being rude and straight forward, Dazai once decsribed him as “ a guy glistening like a slug. I really cannot hang out with him.”
There are many more stories about Chuuya being a gremlin to people around him. It’s said that one time Chuuya yelled: “ Hey you damn governor” at Sakaguchi Ango while staying one meter away from him, because Chuuya was smaller in size compared to Ango and couldn’t win in a fight.
(real life Sakaguchi Ango)
Tumblr media
Another time when the group of friends were drinking, a drunk Chuuya smashed a bottle on Nakamura Mitsuo’s head, yelling: “Imma kill you.” When his friend scolded him for acting so terriblly, Chuuya started crying and shouted: “I’M SAD!”
(the poor victim Nakamura Mitsuo)

Why Fyolai, whether romantic or not, are better together:
From Nikolai’s introduction into BSD you can already see that there’s a sense of familiarity between the two- Nikolai calls Fyodor Dos-Kun (and from what we can see Fyodor allows it) and also you can tell that Nikolai looks up to Fyodor. He starts off by casually mentioning it when talking to Atsushi, because while explaining why he kills/why he’s in a terrorist group- Atsushi claims he doesn’t understand and Nikolai, almost in a scary calm way states that “In the end only Dos-Kun understands.” Almost showcasing a rare moment of sincerity from Nikolai.
Tumblr media
After this rare moment of sincerity, we don’t see Nikolai mention “Dos-kun” again until he meets with Sigma. When meeting with Sigma, he goes on a tangent about how Fyodor is the only person in his life to ever understand him and how Fyodor is the only one to understand his need for Freedom. Nikolai had (supposedly) spent his entire life not being understood by anybody and torturing himself for it. Fyodor gave him validation, empathy ,and also made Nikolai feel empathy towards Fyodor. In this speech Nikolai also admits the only reason he didn’t die was because he thought of Fyodor and the empathy Fyodor gave him and the empathy he felt towards Fyodor (even though initially Nikolai saw freedom in death was “okay” with dying.) With that being said, Nikolai realizes he can never be free, even in death, because Fyodor’s empathy/compassion/ and understanding towards him and Nikolai’s personal feelings of empathy/attachment towards Fyodor. In this moment, he realizes that killing Fyodor is essentially killing that human connection/part of himself which would make him free. Nikolai/Fyodor are two halves of the same person so Nikolai killing Fyodor is freeing himself of the reminder that he is human and can have connection with others.

I think the reason Fyodor let Nikolai die as well was because Nikolai triggered empathy in Fyodor, as seen by his clear eyes which go dark when he’s manipulating someone, and having those feelings towards someone gets in the way of his plan. Basically, Fyodor and Nikolai are more alike than they think. Nikolai represents the half of the character that wants to be free from life/connection, fyodor represents the half that wants to rid the world of his own sin/turmoil/etc, and sigma represents the middle ground connecting the two halves once again bringing empathy between them all. Nikolai is not only based off of half of the character in Dostoyevsky’s books but also off of IRL Nikolai. IRL Nikolai had fallen in love with a priest, which is taboo, causing him to feel trapped by his feelings/shame similar to feeling trapped by Fyodor (parallels.) Nikolai was also a closeted gay in real life and due to religious trauma and environment could only express it through the themes in his writing. Similarly, Fyodor Dostoyevsky was critiqued for gay themes in his book. Kind of another connection they seem to have together which could be paralleled into the series because like I said- Nikolai/fyodor are more similar than they think. Also,Fyodor IRL looked up to Nikolai Gogol, he even goes as far to mention him in a couple of his books- Crime and Punishment being one of them. In Crime and Punishment there is character who sticks up for the MC who was modeled after Gogol. Nikolai and Fyodor are two halves of the same coin- I think due to their connection in real life Asagiri modeled Nikolai partially after the MC of Dostoyevsky’s books. There is so many signs that Fyodor/Nikolai are a stronger duo than many people realize at first- in fact they will most likely be each other’s saving graces. I believe, due to Sigma, that they will end up realizing their connection to together and like in the book Crime and Punishment- those two halves of the same person will come together giving Fyodor and Nikolai their pseudo redemption arc and ultimately saving each other’s lives and causing them to change their entire viewpoints. Interestingly enough I think Sigma represents the clash of two halves and the bringing together of Nikolai/fyodor, even his hair is split into their colors (purple and white.) And interestingly enough the MC of Crime and Punishment’s name is also in English- Split (and like mentioned earlier Nikolai/fyodor are two halves of the same character bound to come together triggering their redemption arc) In the end both Fyodor and Nikolai are lost- but their empathy towards each other can save their lives/alter their views. Ill write about Fyodor’s redemption arc (which includes Nikolai) next time, but just know the entire theme of Crime and Punishment was redemption and the main character was ultimately saved/had his views change due to human connection.

bsd manga spoilers below the cut ; analyzing nikolai a bit
ok so nikolai right basically i kin him yada yada but i wanna talk abt him and stuff!?!! idk why he acts the way he acts but theres obviously something going on there. the fact that he wants to go as far as to kill fyodor even though he has 'human feelings' kind of puts this whole 'i want to be free from feeling' thing he has going on into a more serious light- hes very dedicated and strongly leans towards this and would even go as far as to kill the only person that ever understood him. pls dont call him a yandere?!!?! ive seen some people do that and its honestly gross imo,, he wants to be free from feeling emotion- thats why he wants to kill fyodor. which in my personal opinion i think he will be awfully upset when he does, despite everything it might only make him worse losing that person. as much as he does not want to feel emotion as humans we all need some sort of connection to survive and to strive. nikolai felt like a bird trapped in a cage, the cage was the constrains of human feelings. how they twist your gut and fuck you up mentally sometimes. something must have drilled it into his brain that feeling that way was bad yknow?? its so fucked bc nikolai obviously cares about fyodor- the only reason he fucking wants to 'kill' him is because he HATES feeling things. it must drive him fucking insane and cause him a LOT of pain. personally i like healthy fyolai because nikolai can learn to accept those feelings of affection towards fyodor, and learn how to feel and to grow in a space with the one person who understands him.
