Good Traits Gone Bad
Exploring good traits gone bad in a novel can add depth and complexity to your characters. Here are a few examples of good traits that can take a negative turn:
1. Empathy turning into manipulation: A character with a strong sense of empathy may use it to manipulate others' emotions and gain an advantage.
2. Confidence becoming arrogance: Excessive confidence can lead to arrogance, where a character belittles others and dismisses their opinions.
3. Ambition turning into obsession: A character's ambition can transform into an unhealthy obsession, causing them to prioritize success at any cost, including sacrificing relationships and moral values.
4. Loyalty becoming blind devotion: Initially loyal, a character may become blindly devoted to a cause or person, disregarding their own well-being and critical thinking.
5. Courage turning into recklessness: A character's courage can morph into reckless behavior, endangering themselves and others due to an overestimation of their abilities.
6. Determination becoming stubbornness: Excessive determination can lead to stubbornness, where a character refuses to consider alternative perspectives or change their course of action, even when it's detrimental.
7. Optimism becoming naivety: Unwavering optimism can transform into naivety, causing a character to overlook dangers or be easily deceived.
8. Protectiveness turning into possessiveness: A character's protective nature can evolve into possessiveness, where they become overly controlling and jealous in relationships.
9. Altruism becoming self-neglect: A character's selflessness may lead to neglecting their own needs and well-being, to the point of self-sacrifice and burnout.
10. Honesty becoming brutal bluntness: A character's commitment to honesty can turn into brutal bluntness, hurting others with harsh and tactless remarks.
These examples demonstrate how even admirable traits can have negative consequences when taken to extremes or used improperly. By exploring the complexities of these traits, you can create compelling and multi-dimensional characters in your novel.
Happy writing!

As someone who is lowkey a George and Nora hater (I skip all their scenes when I rewatch LWD), I didn’t feel great about their C plot in Life with Luca. It’s strange, because I found some of it funny. I don’t know if the writers did a better job or if I’m just nostalgic and could appreciate the ridiculousness that has always been a huge part of George and Nora storylines, but I didn’t find them as boring as I usually do. Yet, at the same time, I would so much rather have watched Edwin, Lizzie, and Martie than their parents. I really wish they had been a part of this movie, even as a cameo -- when Casey was looking at their family picture from season 1, I wanted to melt.

Just watched Life with Luca and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised ?? I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it because 1) I’m not the target audience 2) I have a Dasey agenda, but it was fun and endearing !!
The child actors were cute, silly, and had really good chemistry between each other and with Derek and Casey (Derek and his daughter in particular had a really sweet relationship). The actors playing Luca and Skyler had big shoes to fill, and I think there’s potential there! They do feel a little more like Edwin and Lizzie (both are rebellious and more even tempered). I don’t think Luca or Skyler are as neurotic as Derek and Casey to have their kind of fiery relationship.
Simon’s role in the movie was also a great introduction. He has the attitude of Derek but with the quirkiness of Casey. I really would watch an entire season of the three of them getting into shenanigans.
I, of course, always want more Dasey, so I think they should’ve had more scenes. I mostly feel this way because I found it weirdly jarring watching Derek and Casey cooperate or even gently tease each other. In the original show they were almost always aggressively hostile towards each other (on Derek’s side particularly), so I wish they had a deeper heart to heart, so we could’ve learned more about what their relationship has been like for the last decade or so. This movie was setting up a lot which meant that Dasey interactions, in my opinion, took a backseat.
The ending left room for a revival, and judging by this movie, I would be fine if we did or didn’t get one. It seems like there are a lot of family dynamics to work with and I think the actors will only improve with time. The LWD magic is still there. Every character feels like family and that connection between Derek and Casey that carried the original is still so alive. I just don’t know how realistic a show would be considering the commitment needed from everyone.

there’s so much pathologizing over why enemies to lovers is a popular trope (something something the normalization of abuse something something) when the simplest and less moronic answer is that narratives thrive on irony and reversals, and there’s no greater irony than characters going from hating each other’s guts to loving each other unconditionally. raw thesis-antithesis-synthesis.

Spoilers, sweetie
Why don't everyone talk that Brett Hand, literally golden retriever boy, guy who likes literally everyone despite their rudeness, tastes and morals, who loves every human being in general and everyone in particular DISLIKES RON FROM THE VERY FIRST SIGHT? With absolutely no reason to dislike him? Don't tell me that he has been in a team with Gigi, Myc and Andre who usually are first in line to mock everyone him included (if combined - for literally anything) for a very long time and he felt uncomfortable when he and Ron had different opinions about some stuff? I repeat, golden retriever boy? Dislikes a man? For his opinions? After being so exited about meeting Reagan's boyfriend? To the extent he had to ask Andre to make him like Ron?
I don't buy it.
If that's not because of his supressed feelings for Reagan and subconscious jealousy, then I don't know the reason for that.
Like come on, man. The first person you hate for no freaking reason and it's somehow Reagan's boyfriend. Yeah, of course, if you say so.
The whole episode I was like, somebody please tell Brett why he really dislikes Ron. Please.
Yeah, I know that he ends up liking him, but come on. It's Brett. He is able to like Hitler. The thing is, he started to like Ron after he gave Brett a reason to like him, but before Ron Brett didn't need any reasons to like everybody else.
If that's not subconscious feelings then what is.

Wait. Do people really think Reagan forgave her dad? She didn’t. She talked a man down from the brink. She came in ready to kill him and instead of vengeance she saw a broken old fuck. She doesn’t tell him it’s okay. She tells him it’s too late. Tells him it’s not fixable. She’s kind, sure, the same way anyone is kind when they see someone on the edge of the cliff, but there’s never any assurance that he can regain what he lost. It’s basically a goodbye to him in her life.
Reagan calls him a screw up and sends him to jail for his own mental safety. Nothing about that reads as forgiveness to me.
