while i was speedruning through stormlight archive for the first time all of this nohadon being dalinar’s blorbo stuff really reminded me of that other guy… well you know the guy who wrote that one super popular self insert fic.

so here we have a partial redrawing of Dante And Virgil In Hell 1850. Painted by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

this all started as a silly idea to make a quick stormlight archive themed master study, something i could pull in 2-3 days max. of course in a process i decided to make it a full piece and it took me approximately 2 weeks to finish 💀.

Scadrial vs Roshar

[Wind and Truth Spoilers]

Something that I always find interesting about the cosmere is how often Mistborn/Scadrial and Stormlight Archive/Roshar feel like opposites to each other.

On Roshar you have the Radiants who are knights with massive protective armor and they're constantly glowing. When you think about them fighting, they're on an open battle field in the middle of the day and facing their opponents head on. Whereas on Scadrial, the mists come out at night so already there's that contrast but also the majority of the magic users have a lot less survivability than the average Radiant so they have to be more careful.

You also have examples of things being good on one planet but bad on another. Like at the end of Era 1, the answer to defeating Ruin was for Vin to take up Preservation and kill them both so Sazed could become Harmony. Later Autonomy takes interest in the planet and is trying to take it over. At the end of Arc 1, Dalinar takes up Honor, recognizes that he can't fight Odium without causing a catastrophe, so allows Tarvangian to become Retribution in hopes that this will force the rest of the cosmere to get involved.

I bring this all up because today I was thinking about the ending to Wind and Truth. You have Kaladin who takes up Jezerin's place and is in all likelihood going to become a religious figure in Arc 2. I think he was already on that path during Rhythm of War where people started putting shash glyphs on their foreheads. On top of that, the in-universe Wind and Truth book says that Kaladin died, so if that gets out and then returns as the new King of Heralds? But also...what does this sound like?

Kelsier, obviously. BUT something that struck me as interesting is similarities between Marsh and Moash. Kaladin and Moash start off with a complicated relationship. They butt heads but also get closer to each other. One might even say they're like...brothers. Then Moash gets put under the influence of Odium much like Marsh. But not only that but it just hit me that they both have their eyes spike and I just--this is so intentional. Like--we all have noticed that Kell and Kal have similiar names but like just look at Marsh and Moash.

It'll be interesting to see what Marsh's roll will be in Era 3. Brandon has said that Marsh and Kell have a good relationship so if that continues then Moash will probably continue to be an asshole in Arc 2. And if Marsh and Kell's relationship sours then we'll get that fabled Moash redemption arc. (Don't hold your breath)

This contrast is also a big reason why I think the space age will have Roshar and Scadrial on opposite sides of a conflict. Brandon has said there's not going to be a big bad/Thanos type character in the cosmere. That means to me, it'll be a conflict between planets much like a conflict between nations like the Althei and Thaylens or the Basin and the Malwish. I'd be willing to bet that it'll be Scadrial and Sel allied vs Roshar and probably Nalthis. Threnody their space death cult will probably be a wild card. Who knows what Autonomy is going to be up to.

Reading Tress -> Yumi -> Sunlit is such an incredible series of “oh this place sucks!”, “Oh God this is even worse”, then finally “What the fuck is wrong with you Sanderson why would you even make this hellscape exist??”

But… at least they’re all better than the setting of the last Secret Project… shudders

Having read every single Cosmere book save the Secret Projects has given me such a fantastic sense of dramatic irony as I read Wind and Truth. Like: “Oh Shallan just did X! That’s so fun!” And “Dalinar you storming fool, it’s so SIMPLE!!! Why don’t you just- …right.”

This must be what Kelsier and Wit feel like.
