lowkey signs your whumpee is getting sick
aches in odd places, like their hands or their neck
their shirt’s damp with sweat, skin overly sensitive to any draft
a tickle in their throat that won’t go away
eyes that feel like they’re burning
they’re just. so. tired.
swollen lymph nodes that didn’t hurt yesterday
unusual weakness—even lifting light objects feels like a monumental task
that shivery feeling that keeps creeping down their spine without warning

Scar tracing is such a tender staple between caretakers and whumpees but what about scar tracing between whumpers and whumpees?
Whumper running their thumb over a scar they made on whumpee with the same reverence they'd give a piece of art. Admiring their handiwork, or deciding it isn't prominent enough and they'll need to remedy that.
Whumper running their thumb over an old scar they're not responsible for and getting deeply jealous or bothered because Whumpee is their plaything.
Alternatively, Whumpee tracing Whumper's scars and coming to terms with the horrifying realization that they're beginning to feel something softer for Whumper.

Alright I just saw a post about restraints... and I'm curious now. What are your favorite ways of restraining your whumpees? 👀 And are those the most effective/practical?

Whumper savoring the reaction of whumpee as they merely describe all of the horrifying things that they intend to do to whumpee.
Whumper watching for every twitch and slight contraction of the pupils from a defiant, stoic whumpee.
Whumper enjoying a reactive whumpee's slack jaw, sweating, heavy breathing, whimpers, and even tears of anticipatory horror.
Whumper delighting in all the evidence of dizziness, nausea, pounding heart that their whumpee gives them.
They haven't even done anything yet, and whumpee is already giving them so much satisfaction.

Love when a whumpee gets hurt and then falls into the water. Just got shot? Oh well how about you go into the water and now you have to worry about not drowning too. Car crash? Into the water with you. Feel a little under the weather? Into the water.

caretaker is changing whumpee's bandages and just gasps, or sucks in a breath through their teeth, or makes some sort of scared / upset noise.... and whumpee says "is it bad?"
caretaker pauses, then shakes their head, taking whumpee's hand. "no. no, no, you're fine."
good shit.

I love it when a Whumpee of any kind doesn't know that they are, in fact, a Whumpee.
Living weapon Whumpee? No, no. They are just stronger and have to prove their worth. They were trained? Well, yeah, but just because they are meant to be strong. They aren't a living weapon, they can do anything they want; right, Handler?
Pet Whumpee? No, that's absurd. Whumpee just likes being spoiled. Do they wear a collar and eat from a bowl? Yes. But that's only because they like it, nobody forces them to, actually, Master said they can take the collar off anytime if they don't like that one.
Lab Whumpee? Of course no. They are doing something good, they are helping people by allowing the doctors to test experiments on them. They want to help, and the Doctor always tells them they can leave. The pain and the sedatives aren't stopping them, are they?
Just Whumpee's that don't know anything better. That's the world they were born in, and the people around them tell them that that's how it's meant to be.
Why bother struggling against what's meant to be?

idk whether this is an underrated trope but man i love the kind of whump where the character passes out, like total dead weight, and the caretaker (bonus if it's their rival/enemy) has to carry them back to safety (whether it's bridal style, on their back, with their arms under whumpee's armpits)

"Guy who knows the protagonist from way back when and just fucking hates them for some reason and is constantly trying to re-litigate some ancient beef" is an undervalued tool for expository worldbuilding.

happy whumptober
I can't personally stomach the extreme ends of whump anymore, but I'm glad that they existed and continue to exist Examining why I became sad at certain fanfics helped me get around dissociating the second I tried to think of trauma thanks to all the fanfic writers out there

I know this has definitely been done before, but I love the idea of whumpee trying to run on a broken limb. Maybe whumper cornered them, trapped them somewhere and is now taking their sweet time approaching the whumpee, who’s trying desperately to run, move, flee. But their right leg is so badly broken that it can barely support them. The pain is so terrible, they can barely even focus on the whumper’s impending approach, on the words they speak as they tease the whumpee. Their eyes are watery with tears and their body is shaking from shock. Everything is going too fast, yet too slow. And they know they will be caught. They know. They know that the whumper is laughing and whistling along, happy as ever. But it feels so far away. Like the whumper is in another room. But they know that it’s happening just a few feet away. The dread. They should have never tried to escape. They now know the pain they feel now, will be made tenfold. Their sobs are muted and strange to their own ears. And their leg wobbles at odd, strange angles as they force it to move. To run. To do anything. But it’s far too late now. Their leg is too bad off. Their body is too tired. They hit the ground right before whumper’s feet. And know immediately that the leg is going to be bent and broken in more ways very…very soon.

Reminded of how much I love the dark display of trust when whumper gives whumpee a weapon. Either because whumper is confident whumpee is too scared of the consequences to turn the weapon on them, or better yet, is coming around to their side.
