sooooo much of umineko is about characters (especially but not exclusively the girls & women) being imprisoned by gendered expectations and violence imposed upon them. and lion, an idealized piece with the better life sayo envisioned for herself, is not necessarily someone without gender altogether but specifically someone who has the ability and self-assuredness to say, "i want you to make peace with not having a clear answer to that and treat me as a fellow human" - something she was so thoroughly denied from day one
#a lot of people don't understand this#so to this day whenever lion comes up in a discussion it becomes about their gender#the question itself is what matters not the answer#~ Lion#~ sayo#~ requiem

lion as a kind of narrative device for "the hypothetical world where a lot more things Didn't go wrong" who ascends to the level of personhood through sheer force of will (ha) is itself such an interesting arc to pull off in the span of a single episode. like lion doesn't meaningfully exist (as illustrated by the seating arrangement contradictions) except to represent the Concept of the best-case scenario after natsuhi is given the baby, and yet escapes into a higher plane of existence by finding a reader who can see the heart and understand lion. which of course is right at home with the "without love it cannot be seen" subtext that a piece will become real if loved enough

love love love when a particularly manipulative character is lying off their ass about something and then throws in one hauntingly genuine line
