        so  ...  hannah  is  dumb  sexy  .  emphasis  on  the  dumb  ashkasa  .  she's  also  scarlet's  stepsister  who  ...  it  is  a  wonder  she  made  it  this  far  ,  even  with  her  sister  as  a  presence  in  her  life  .  basically  ...  karen  smith  ?  you  know  her  ,  right  ?  okay  take  her  personality  and  put  it  on  jihyo  .  that's  it  .  that's  her  .  

nah  just  kidding  .  she  has  a  lot  more  emotional  depth  .  even  if  she  just  outwardly  appears  to  be  as  shallow  as  a  kiddy  pool  .  

growing  up  ,  she  was  always  praised  for  her  appearance  by  her  parents  and  by  people  who  attended  her  stepdad's  church  .  literally  every  sunday  ,  they'd  be  like  '  aww  ...  she's  so  pretty  .  '  but  they  never  took  a  second  to  appreciate  how  smart  she  is  !!  and  hannah  is  crazy  smart  .  

like  i  imagine  she  says  some  shit  sometimes  in  the  group  chat  and  since  she's  usually  ??  joking  around  ??  literally  the  whole  gc  is  like  '  where  the  FUCK  did  you  learn  that  '  and  she  tries  to  play  it  off  ashkash  .  but  honestly  ,  she  was  so  much  more  willing  to  show  her  smarts  before  she  was  sent  off  at  twelve  .  

it  turns  out  ...  that  nerdy  girls  get  picked  on  at  catholic  boarding  school  !  who  knew  ?  anyways  ,  she  resented  scarlet  (  because  she  felt  like  this  was  her  fault  since  she  was  sent  off  to  reform  school  and  their  parents  REALLY  wanted  not  to  have  two  failures  as  children  so  ...  boarding  school  )  and  after  the  bullying  got  to  be  a  lot  ...  she  just  stopped  .  she  pretended  like  she  didn't  know  all  of  the  answers  in  class  anymore  .  plus  ,  puberty  had  hit  and  it  wasn't  hard  to  figure  out  that  she  was  prettier  than  most  of  the  mean  girls  .  so  ...  she  like   ..  wormed  her  way  into  the  clique  and  waited  for  some  of  them  to  graduate  ...  before  establishing  herself  as  like  ...  the  magnanimous  queen  bee  .  literally  ,  everyone  always  has  something  nice  to  say  about  hannah  .  

so  hannah  finished  out  her  primary  school  education  at  a  catholic  boarding  school  .  which  is  ...  kinda  wild  because  after  her  sophomore  year  ,  she  was  basically  running  it  .  this  girl  had  some  CRAZY  extracurriculars  .  but  her  one  and  only  love  was  theatre  because  when  she  was  thirteen  (  and  as  a  guilt  present  )  ,  her  parents  took  her  to  see  wicked  on  broadway  and  after  that  ...  hannah  was  like  '  i've  !!  got  to  do  that  for  a  living  ' 

 honestly  ,  her  parents  wanted  her  to  go  to  like  notre  dame  or  something  and  do  like  ...  finance  .  but  when  she  heard  that  scarlet  was  going  to  uva  ,  it  was  literally  settled  for  her  .  because  she  loved  her  sister  and  she  had  some  pretty  fond  memories  of  her  ,  even  after  the  whole  separate  boarding  school  thing  .  so  she  begged  and  pleaded  with  them  until  they  allowed  her  to  come  to  uva  .  and  she  was  basically  like  ‘  i’mma  watch  scar  ‘  ...  but  tbh  ,  scar  is  probably  doing  the  most  watching  . especially when she's holding hannah's hair out of her face as she throws up after a sorority party . 

honestly , hannah was determined to have the full college experience - as explained by teen tv . so she rushed delta delta delta at uva . got in and has been loving it . usually , most of her absences can be explained with like parties or service events or cheerleading practice .   but  she’s  very  active  ,  has  a  hand  in  trying  to  change  the  campus  .  plus  ,   she  just  loves  a  good  party  .  lives  in  the  sorority  house  and  has  decorated  her  room  in  the  most  extra  way  possible  .  

her  secret  is  that  she  seduced  her  professor  for  a  better  grade  .  but  it  was  really  so  that  she  could  get  the  lead  in  the  adaptation  of  pretty  woman  that  they're  doing  .  and  his  wife  walked  in  on  hannah  giving  him  a  bj  after  practice  was  over  .  and  she  didn't  confront  hannah  at  first  .  but  one  day  while  hannah  was  leaving  the  professor's  office  ,  she  was  waiting  for  her  outside  .  and  she  basically  called  hannah  a  hypocrite  -  and  that  she  was  going  to  tell  her  parents  .  which  made  her  absolutely  fucking  ...  livid  .  and  the  next  thing  she  remembers  is  that  she  is  standing  at  the  top  of  a  stairwell  and  the  woman  was  lying  at  the  bottom  of  it  .  so  she  called  911  since  the  area  had  no  cameras  and  the  woman  has  been  in  a  coma  since  .  

as  far  as  personality  goes  ,  hannah  is  really  ,  painfully  nice  .  but  also  ,  super  naive  .  has  a  few  mean  bones  in  her  body  and  can  come  across  as  snippy  or  bitchy  ,  especially  if  she  doesn't  like  you  .  (  WANTED  CONNECTION  :  someone  who  absolutely  can't  stand  hannah  and  how  she  comes  across  as  vapid  .  so  they  just  constantly  fight  with  each  other  in  the  group  chat  .  )

mickey must be doing something right, if she can laugh that lightly at his joking. this is what he should be focusing on. what hell has mina been through? he hasn’t talked to any doctors, he hasn’t heard from charlie or bazz from when they visited earlier. he just knows she’s here, so thin and beaten after erebus had threatened her life was so close to over. so she’s been through a lot, she doesn’t need to be spending her first night of freedom worrying and reliving the pain. mickey should just keep making her laugh, a brief moment where she can just… be a normal college student again. but it’s hard for mickey to focus. to keep cracking these jokes and smile like nothing’s wrong. because everything is going wrong so fast, all of their heads are spinning. 

“ oh, a young puppy? ” he challenges. “ so you’re allowed to make demands about the gift i’m getting you? ” like he could just go out and get her a pet she doesn’t want and would have to be responsible for. “ golden retrievers are cute, but do you have room for a dog that big? they need lots of time outside and plenty of room to run around. you might make your little puppy sad in your apartment. ” he taps a finger in thought against his bottom lip. “ what about a terrier or something? small enough to live a less active apartment life, but big enough that it’s still fun to play with and not just a purse dog. ” he pauses, before adding. “ plus i’m pretty sure the shelter only has mutts and stuff. you’d have to go to a breeder to get a golden retriever and that would wipe me out of my textbook money for next semester. ” 

with her next words, mickey feels himself deflating. he can’t keep up the happy charade forever, apparently. “ would it hurt to move that much? ” he asks, worried. laying down would be nice, being able to feel the steadiness of her breath next to him, the warmth that signaled she’s alive. “ mina- ” his voice chokes, so he grabs her hand between his own. all he can think about is how close they had been to losing her. how they tried to fight him on calling an ambulance. who cares if they get in trouble? is covering their asses worth mina’s life? “ please don’t thank me for that, ” he whispers. “ that’s not… i don’t need you to thank me. i’m just glad you’re okay. ” he knows they weren’t the closest in their little band of friends, but he couldn’t just… let her die. she’s better than the rest of them, her death would just… it just reminded him too much of mistakes he’s made in the past. he doesn’t deserve thanks for doing what he should’ve done all along.

        she  wonders  what  they  would  do  if  she  demanded  something  else  .  not  just  a  puppy  .  but  she's  thinking  of  something  that  may  be  harder  :  an  apology  .  she's  spent  a  lot  of  time  ,  this  past  week  ,  thinking  about  them  .  her  friends  .  and  what  they  had  been  doing  while  she  had  been  suffering  .  the  thought  of  chewing  them  out  had  fueled  her  survival  .  it  had  been  a  dark  space  to  spend  her  time  .  she  had  spent  more  time  imagining  confrontations  than  she  had  imagined  an  escape  .  perhaps  it  was  because  she  hadn't  thought  that  she  would  be  escaping  .  and  she  had  learned  a  little  bit  too  much  for  her  capacity  for  blame  .  did  that  make  her  a  shitty  person  ?  that  she  wanted  them  to  know  that  she  had  suffered  because  of  them  ?  that  they  had  dropped  the  ball  .  and  this  hadn't  been  on  a  group  project  :  it  had  been  on  her  life  .  

        '  aren't  i  allowed  to  ?  '  mina  bats  her  eyelashes  ,  tries  to  draw  herself  out  of  her  thoughts  .  it  isn't  good  to  dwell  on  the  past  .  she's  safe  now  anyways  ,  right  ?  (  that  seems  like  a  foolishly  idealistic  thought  to  have  .  )  the  brunette  takes  another  sip  of  her  tea  before  settling  it  down  on  bedside  table  .  she's  full  ,  warm  ,  and  ...  there's  something  like  a  spark  of  happiness  .  mina  wants  so  badly  to  grasp  it  before  everything  goes  down  the  drain  once  more  .  she  makes  a  show  of  considering  his  ideas  ,  fingers  touching  her  delicately  pointed  chin  .  and  finally  ,  she  nods  ...  twice  .  

        '  i  guess  i  would  be  content  with  a  terrier  ,  '  from  the  light  in  her  eyes  ,  mina  would  be  absolutely  ecstatic  to  have  a  terrier  .  '  but  i  want  a  boston  terrier  ,  if  possible  .  and  he  can  be  ...  a  mutt  .  he  doesn't  have  to  be  a  purebred  dog  .  i  know  your  education  is  important  .  '  is  it  really  ?  god  ,  how  is  she  supposed  to  concentrate  on  a  paper  ever  again  ?    '  we  could  name  him  after  one  of  your  textbooks  .  that  way  he'd  know  where  he  came  from  .  how  do  you  feel  about  physics  or  chemistry  or  even  --  "  she  pauses  ,  a  light  bulb  going  off  in  her  head  .  '  since  you're  a  theology  major  ,  we  can  just  name  him  god  .  his  name  will  be  god  dog  ,  get  it  ?  '

        she  shakes  her  head  then  :  soft  ,  silly  smile  still  on  her  lips  .  '  i  don't  think  so  .  i'm  extra  drugged  up  .  i  told  the  nurse  to  surprise  me  with  the  dosage  last  time  .  and  judging  from  ...  how  i  kinda  can't  feel  my  toes  ,  she  definitely  delivered  .  '  she  manages  to  pat  the  spot  next  to  her  before  he  reaches  to  her  ,  voice  choked  up  .  mina  is  almost  startled  by  how  tightly  he  grasps  her  hand  in  between  his  own  .    and  she's  more  than  startled  by  how  she  can  feel  her  eyes  beginning  to  tear  up  .  he's  right  :  she  shouldn't  have  to  thank  him  . 

         there's  this  warm  ,  sad  feeling  rising  inside  of  her  and  she  reaches  out  ,  touches  his  arm  with  her  free  hand  .  it's  a  bit  uncomfortable  .  but  she  needs  to  do  it  .  '  still  ,  '  she  murmurs  ,  the  words  breaking  the  quiet  between  them  .  '  --  i'm  so  thankful  to  you  .  that  you  helped  me  when  i  needed  you  to  .  that  you  were  there  .  '  and  really  ,  that's  all  that  she'd  ever  wanted  from  her  friends  .  and  it  had  been  a  slap  in  the  face  when  they  weren’t  .  an  inhale  ,  she  leans  back  -  swipes  away  tears  .  '  i'll  let  you  pick  out  a  stupid  movie  .  we  can  even  watch  psychotic  white  women  on  lifetime  .  '

when mickey sinks deeper into the chair, he can almost feel every joint pop with relief. his body’s not used to this much activity in one day, and the adrenaline has now worn down with seeing mina in front of him. he smile behind the lip of his drink and takes a few large gulps of his own tea. it’s the same shit they keep back in the break room at the store, so the taste is familiar. soothing, almost, reminding him of monotonous night shifts and letting himself relax after hours on his feet. it has the same feeling for him now, giving him a moment of respite but knowing as the minutes tick by there’s only the impending end to his peace, and the real work and stress will kick back up again. he’s settled, but not relaxed. never relaxed. but mina’s presence is soothing enough, warm as the honey congealed at the bottom of his cup. 

“ a puppy? ” he snorts. “ sure, i’ll get you a puppy. before i visit you tomorrow i’ll make a stop at the shelter and find the oldest, ugliest dog in there. it’ll be lazy and house trained and sit right at the end of your bed. how perfect does that sound? ” he knows they’re just joking, but at this point if she wants a puppy after all she’s been through she can get her damn puppy. he’ll raise it himself in his shitty apartment, let it piss on all of his shit if it’d take even of an ounce of pain away from what the psychopath did to her. “ we can smuggle it out under my shirt it’s fine. i’ll just say you knocked me up. ” there’s an attempt at a wink, but with his tired eyes it just turns into a mismatched blink. close enough. 

her question has him stiffening. yes, he did wish he was out there looking for rumi. but he also wants to be here. what do you do when you have two people you care about in so much danger? how do you choose, with the flip of a coin? he’s here now, regardless, this is where he needs to be. “ they’re all out there, and what can i do without a car? ” mickey assures her. “ despite not… all of us caring about rumi being missing as others. ” he pats the back of mina’s hand. “i’m here, okay? that’s not changing.”

        she  continues  to  swirl  the  spoon  in  her  cup  .  thoughts  becoming  more  introspective  as  the  clock  ticks  ,  counting  down  the  minutes  until  the  next  hour  .  a  look  up  ,  lips  part  .  she  can't  believe  that  it's  already  tomorrow  .  that  she's  been  here  for  an  eternity  .  that  she  will  be  here  for  an  eternity  more  .  she's  relaxed  .  and  while  it  may  not  be  by  choice  ...  it's  almost  nice  .  to  imagine  this  cocktail  of  drugs  in  her  system  doing  its  work  .  maybe  eventually  ,  she'll  be  able  to  sleep  .  let  her  eyes  close  and  slip  into  the  restful  embrace  of  sleep  .  she's  been  fighting  sleep  so  hard  .  every  visitor  is  another  chance  to  avoid  it  .  to  keep  herself  awake  and  aware  and  away  from  her  memories  of  erebus  .  if  she  closes  her  eyes  ,  lets  the  shadows  embrace  her  :  she  knows  that  she'll  wake  up  in  the  middle  of  the  night  ,  her  scream  echoing  down  the  hospital  hallway  .  and  mina  can't  let  that  happen  .  she  can't  be  viewed  as  anything  BUT  strong  .

        the  idea  of  a  dog  is  actually  nice  .  her  ,  sage  ,  and  roy's  apartment  could  use  a  little  more  protection  .  god  ,  she  hadn't  even  thought  about  going  home  until  now  .  but  the  thought  makes  her  blanch  .  she'll  have  to  eventually  .  go  back  to  the  apartment  that  she  was  taken  from  .  god  ,  does  it  even  count  as  home  anymore  ?    she  forces  herself  to  stop  thinking  about  it  ,  lets  mickey's  rambles  fill  her  mind  until  it  overtakes  all  of  the  darkness  lurking  .  she's  strong  ,  remember  ?  a  laugh  then  .  the  thought  of  mickey  sneaking  the  puppy  out  beneath  his  shirt  garners  a  genuine  smile  and  reaction  .  '  woah  ,  woah  ,  '  her  fingers  squeeze  his  knee  .  '  i  didn't  say  i  wanted  an  old  dog  .  what  if  it  doesn't  like  me  ?  i'd  rather  have  a  young  ,  energetic  dog  that  bites  on  my  shoes  and  that  will  try  and  sleep  in  the  same  bed  as  me  .  what  are  your  thoughts  on  golden  retrievers  ?  '  with  concern  ,  she  notes  that  he's  ...  exhausted  .

        which  is  fair  .  and  his  thoughts  on  rumi  are  also  fair  .  but  mina  still  feels  guilty  .  she  may  not  be  able  to  physically  do  anything  .  but  she  should  be  searching  for  clues  .  figuring  out  a  way  to  bring  her  home  so  that  she  doesn't  have  to  go  through  a  week  of  hell  and  come  out  a  different  person  .  nonetheless  ,  she  finds  herself  relaxing  in  the  bed  as  he  says  that  he's  there  to  stay  .  '  if  you  want  ,  you  can  lay  on  the  bed  with  me  ,  '  the  offer  is  gentle  ,  almost  awkward  .  '  i  know  that  you're  tired  .  and  that  today  has  been  a  lot  .  and  i  also  want  to  say  ...  thank  you  .  because  if  it  wasn't  for  you  -  '  a  deep  ,  shuddering  breath  .  '  i  wouldn't  ...  be  here  .  i'd  be  dead  .  '
