I won’t go through each of the stories in the series I have been talking about but you should totally check them out. I will talk about the one I love the most and actually the first one I found, which is actually the sixth one in the series called Adventure in England which as I’m sure you can guess follows our favorite couple to England. Ishval has the pair, along with Lin, return to England to train Mai and plan for their wedding. But of course something has to go wrong and in this case it comes in the form of a young girl named Diana who is obsessed with Oliver Davis. She goes as far as hiring a hitman to kill Mai so that she and Oliver can finally be together. Mixed in between the drama of hired killers and a delusional girl are adorable Maru moments, with Mai learning more about her own abilities and about the company.

Hoshi wa Akatsuki no Kage is a short manga with a collection of short stories about vampires. These are short but they are really interesting. The first one is about a young maiden who forced into a marriage only to run away. She pretends to save a young aristocrat and tries to seduce him into loving her so that she could marry him instead of the older man who her parents wanted her to marry. The abandoned church she held him in is actually haunted and the two of them are attacked each night by dark demons. The young girl gives herself up to save him in the end and is eaten by a vampire. In another one, the same women from before is a vampire who turns a young student. This one is cool because it makes you think about how vampires would have to live in this current day and age. She had to give up school and was only able to survive because someone helps her because he wanted to become a vampire himself. Of course there are the issues of people missing and police investigations. Overall, these stories are short but great if you don’t have a lot of time.

One more thing about Black Rock Shooter is that each medium is actually set in a different universe with a different plot line and different characters with the exception of the title character of course. The anime and the OVA are the only ones that share characters but even then they are slightly different in their plot. While still focusing on Mato as she navigates middle school and becomes friends with Yomi, there are others she encounters and other relationships she discovers with more characters bothe in reality and in the other dimension, along with an exploration of her own mind and character. The manga focuses on the title character with a different partner named Ron as they help souls who are stuck between heaven and earth. In the video game, Black Rock Shooter awakens in the future where the earth is taken over by aliens and she must try to regain her memories while she fights off the invaders. I love this idea because it allows you to discover the character in different scenarios and different circumstances.

The next in this series is called A New Problem again by Ishval and is a slightly more mundane version of ghost hunt but still just as cute. This is not a one shot but is still a shorter story than most of the ones I read. Regardless, the story has a good flow to it that packs a fair amount of content despite its smaller size. The story follows Mai after Mai and Naru have gotten together but they still haven’t told the rest of SPR about their relationship. She goes to a sleepover with several girls who she isn’t the best of friends with. The three girls all have a crush on Naru and decide that Mai is in the way of them getting him. Mai ends up the hospital and Naru reveals his new status with regards to Mai to the rest of the group. This is a really cute story and delves a little deeper into the OC the author added to the story, revealing her abilities as well as formally joining the team.

This is probably just a weird thing with the app I use to read manga but one is really strange with the chapters. The basic info says there are 115 chapters in this manga called Hannune Banhada! Season 2. The only thing is that there are only 12 chapters in reality. As you can imagine, something must have happened to turn 12 chapters into 115 chapters. It’s super annoying but there are 10 copies for every 1 chapter. They write it as vol 1 chapter 1, vol 2 chapter 1 and so on and so forth. It’s hard to read when I have to skip several chapters just to read a new one.

Black Rock Shooter is an interesting anime. On the surface it seems like a mix of slice of life and fighter anime, with  some scenes following a young girl named Mato as she befriends a girl at school while some have a girl with a blue flaming eye fighting other characters. What I love about it is how the fighting characters in a separate dimension seem to reflect the psychological feelings of the characters Mato meets in real life, with her being Black Rock Shooter. There is also an OVA which I actually watched first but when I saw the anime it seems like the OVA is a miniature version of the anime so if you are interested but still unsure just watch the OVA and see for yourself. That said, I’ll use the OVA to explain what I mean by the characters psychological aspects. The OVA focuses on just Mato and her new friend Yomi. As the two girls grow farther apart as Mato becomes friends with another girl and Yomi becomes jealous, you can see Black Rock Shooter in the other dimension preparing to face off against Dead Master. As Yomi continues to distance herself you can see how she slowly becomes Dead Master herself and how Mato eventually becomes Black Rock Shooter in order to face off against Dead Master and bring her friend back from the literal dark place she had fallen.
