What Kind of Dressing Do You Use on a Wound Vac?
Chronic or hard-to-heal wounds, such as bedsores and severe burns, can be a significant source of pain and suffering. In addition, such wounds can pose a real threat to patient well-being, in some cases such as diabetic foot ulcers.
Thanks to technological advances, modern methods offer new hope for treating problematic wounds. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) or wound vacuum therapy (wound vac) is one of the most effective and widely used modern wound care methods.
Tumblr media
What Is Wound Vacuum Therapy?
In wound vac therapy, negative pressure is used to treat wounds. Negative pressure is applied to the wound using a vacuum pump or vac machine for wounds. This method is used to treat various kinds of wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers and bedsores. Wound vac therapy accelerates wound closure and thus healing.
Sucking the secretions and excess fluids of the wound reduces inflammation and swelling, improving the healing process. Moreover, reducing inflammation and swelling helps the patient feel comfortable.
The suction power of the device brings the two edges of the wound closer together. The proximity of the two edges of the wound accelerates healing and reduces the risk of scarring.
Applications of Wound Vac Therapy
This method is used to treat a wide range of chronic and acute wounds, including:
1- Grade one and grade two burns
2- Chronic wounds
3- Diabetic foot ulcer
4- Leg venous ulcers
5- Bedsore
6- Wounds with high exudates
7- Acute wounds and surgical wounds that have a risk of infection
Wound Vac Device and Dressing
A wound vacuum system has several parts: dressing, adhesive film, tubing, canister, and vacuum pump. The wound vac dressing and its fittings act as the interface between the wound and the vacuum pump.
The dressing is put directly on the wound. The wound vacuum dressing can be made of various substances, including foam, hydrocolloids, silicone, and gauze. Foam dressings are the most common type. They allow air to pass through and can be molded to fit the wound perfectly. After debridement, a sterile foam dressing is put directly on the wound. The dressing should fully cover the wound and a margin around it.
The adhesive film covers the foam and a wider margin around the wound. A tube passes through the film and is embedded in the foam. The film completely seals off the foam dressing and the wound. The only passage for air is through the tubing.
The tubing is connected to the vacuum pump. The pump generates negative pressure in the range of 50 to 125 mmHg. This negative pressure results in a vacuum under the foam and on the wound. The vacuum draws exudates out of the wound. It also pulls the edges of the wound together. The exudate is taken to the canister through the tubing and is later discarded.
The vac machine for wounds can work continuously or at intervals. The wound vac system can also push saline solution or antibiotics into the wound. The pump makes a soft noise as it works. An alarm sounds when the seal is broken, or there is a leak. The pump is portable, and you take it with you during the treatment.
The dressing should be changed at least two to three times a week to promote wound healing and prevent infection. A qualified nurse or a trained family member can do the changing under sterile conditions. Like other dressings, changing the wound vacuum dressing can be somewhat painful. Your doctor can prescribe pain-relieving medications for such situations.
You can disconnect the system to take a quick shower, but it should not be disconnected for more than two hours a day; neither can you disconnect the system and take a bath. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.
Benefits of Wound Vac Therapy
The benefits of generating negative pressure around the wound with the use of a foam dressing include:
1- Reducing wound healing time
2- Reducing the risk of wound infection
3- Reducing the required number of dressings and the frequency of replacement
4- Increasing blood flow in the wound area
5- Removing excess fluid from the wound
To make the best use of wound vac therapy, you should have proper nutrition rich in micronutrients, vitamins, and electrolytes quit smoking and control underlying diseases such as diabetes and vascular problems.

If the affected area is open without any dressing, air puts more pressure on the wound and slows the healing process. Using a vac machine for wounds, the doctor decreases the air pressure, which helps the wound heal quickly. Buy the finest quality wound vac from LikekShell.

How Much Faster Does a Wound Heal With a Wound Vac Therapy?
Wound VAC therapy is a technique for removing fluid and infection from an injury in order to aid healing.
A particular dressing (bandage) is applied to the wound, which is then sealed using a gentle vacuum pump.
Negative pressure wound therapy devices relieve pressure on the wound, allowing it to heal more quickly.
A VAC system can help your wound heal faster by doing the following:
• Draining the wound of extra fluid
• Swelling reduction
• Bacterial reduction in the wound
• Maintaining a moist and warm wound
• Assisting in the drawing together of wound edges
• Increasing the amount of blood flowing to your wound
• Swelling and redness are lessening (inflammation)
Wound Vac Treatment Length
Most healthcare providers advocate changing the dressing every 48 to 72 hours or at least three times a week if you're wondering how long a wound vac should be on.
If the wound is infected, the dressing may need to be changed more frequently. The time it takes for a wound to heal after receiving wound vac treatment varies greatly depending on the nature and severity of the wound.
The duration of treatment can range from a few days to several months.
What Is the Best Way to Take Care of Your NPWT Dressing?
A wound VAC dressing prevents you from bathing or swimming. If the dressing is submerged for an extended period of time, it may loosen or the wound may become infected. You can, however, turn off the pump for a few minutes to shower.
There could be a leak in the dressing if the pump alarm goes off. Request that the dressing be replaced by calling your home health nurse or the clinic where your dressing is changed.
If you suffer any of the following during wound VAC treatment, contact your doctor:
• constipation, nausea, or vomiting
• a temperature of 102°F or greater.
• dizziness or confusion
• Redness, warmth, or bleeding surrounding the wound.
• a rash or itching around the dressing
What Are TheDangers of Vacuum-assisted Wound Closure?
Wound VAC carries a few uncommon hazards, including:
• There is bleeding (which may be severe)
• Infection of the wound
• A link between the intestine and the skin that is abnormal (enteric fistula)
Dressing change training can assist to lessen the risk of these issues. In addition, your healthcare practitioner will thoroughly assess you to ensure that you are a good candidate for the treatment.
Wounds That Aren't Suited for VAC
VAC can be used on a variety of wounds. Some wounds, however, are not appropriate for VAC. These are some of them:
• sores around joints that could recur as a result of limb movement
• cancerous cells
• wounds that have become infected
• Organs or blood vessels that are exposed
• Sensitive skin
• regions where there is a lack of blood flow
Is it painful to use a wound VAC?
You may feel pulling and stretching around your incision when VAC therapy begins. VAC therapy shouldn't hurt, and if it does, it's a sign of a problem.
When VAC bandages are replaced, many people endure discomfort. A medical expert may give pain medication 30 to 60 minutes before changing the bandages in specific circumstances.
Wound VAC treatment is done where?
VAC therapy can be done in a medical institution or in a doctor's office.
Depending on the size and location of the wound, you may be able to get VAC therapy at home. If you are able to continue VAC therapy at home, your surgeon will advise you.
Final Words
Pressure is used in wound VAC therapy to assist close wounds and speed up healing. It can be used to treat wounds caused by burns, caesarean deliveries, and traumatic injuries, among other things.
In most cases, there is no need to prepare for VAC ahead of time.
Ask your doctor any particular questions you have regarding your wound healing if you're receiving VAC therapy.

Tips to Choose Best Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Manufacturer
Knowledge of Device FunctionBrand TrustPerformance of NPWT SystemAccuracy Level of NPWT SystemTraining Provided by the Company
Some wounds are very difficult to heal; examples include diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, arterial ulcers, certain skin graft donor sites, and other chronic wounds. A combination of factors, including the weakened immune system of the patient and damaging effects of the underlying disease, delay wound healing in these conditions, making them potentially dangerous.
Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) or Vacuum-Assisted Closure Therapy (VACT) is a modern wound healing method used for such conditions. Used in conjunction with wound dressings and topical therapies, this is an effective way to remove excess fluid from the wound bed, promote granulation tissue formation, and improve circulation to the wound site.
NPWT combines negative pressure and vacuum to promote healing and protect against infection in chronic wounds and ulcers. It has also been shown to improve circulation, relieve pain, and reduce edema in patients with poorly perfused wounds. However, choosing the best NPWT system can be a challenge.

5 Golden Rules for Buying NPWT Systems
There are many factors to consider when choosing the best NPWT manufacturer. If you wish to buy an NPWT system, you must be guided by certain principles when selecting the device. If you want to choose the best NPWT system manufacturer, you should follow these five golden rules. These tips will help you choose the perfect NPWT medical device for your needs.
Knowledge of Device Function
APWT is a form of vacuum therapy. It works by maintaining negative pressure in the wound and creating a seal. When you place the wound in an NPWT device, a vacuum is created within it, and excess tissue fluids are drawn out. At the same time, your skin’s natural healing mechanisms get activated. These factors help reduce pain, promote faster healing, and prevent infection and scarring. Research has shown that NPWT can benefit wounds in many ways.
Brand Trust
The first thing you need to do when selecting an NPWT manufacturer is to build confidence in their capabilities. How long have they been in business? Do they produce a full line of high-quality products? Have there ever been recalls or other problems that indicate the company is unreliable? Are there good reviews on websites like Angie's List or Yelp? Once you have an initial shortlist, look into the reputation of each company.
Performance of NPWT System
The most crucial factor that makes an NPWT device better than its competitors is its performance. It depends on parameters such as efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and compliance. These items contribute to the proper treatment of a patient's wound in a safe manner.
Accuracy Level of NPWT System
It is essential to evaluate each company individually. Some suppliers may have an excellent track record regarding device efficiency. However, other companies with low prices may not provide satisfactory results.
Any NPWT system should have a sufficient level of accuracy and resolution. If you want your patients to be able to use the system safely, high accuracy is a must. Accuracy depends on a number of factors, including the size of the dressing, the body part to which it is applied, the temperature and humidity surrounding the dressing, and the viscosity of the material used for the dressing.
You need to make sure the patient knows how accurate or inaccurate your NPWT system is compared to other products on the market before using it.
While all manufacturers offer training, not all of them are adequate. Before you purchase a new NPWT device, make sure you can attend a training session where all your questions will be answered by a medical professional.
Proper training will ensure that you learn firsthand how an NPWT device works. Such training will help you decide whether or not a particular device is suitable for your patients.
Bottom Line
NPTW is a modern technology that has shown remarkable potential in the care of difficult to heal wounds in various diseases and conditions. Choosing the right NPWT device can significantly affect the outcome of wound treatment and care. LIFE kSHELL offers safe and effective NPWT products. Get in touch today to learn more about the range of our products and solutions.
