“The added context for this whole discussion is that many BTS fans, and K-pop fans at large, have made a concerted effort to share hashtags, petitions, and donation links in the days following the police killing of George Floyd. They’ve inundated police surveillance apps, and they’ve clogged racist hashtags. But while a significant number of fans have mobilized their social media platforms to bring attention to the Black Lives Matter movement, it seemed that many were reluctant to hold each other accountable within the fandom when the reputation of their idol might be damaged as a result. The kerfuffle exposed a general lack of compassion for the emotional toll many Black fans were experiencing in their personal lives due to the recent violence. Furthermore, K-pop is what it is in large part because of Black music and culture.
The fact that many Black fans’ opinions on the sample were stifled, exploited, or ignored shows that many non-Black people within the fandom still need to confront how systemic racism manifests in online spaces.
This incident also speaks volumes about how some fans perceive the fan-idol relationship. The idea of trusting an artist unconditionally is as worrying as it is ridiculous. Of course, fans want to be trusting. We want to believe that our idols are good people with good intentions. But we need to internalize that they can be “good” people with good intentions and still make mistakes — the same way non-famous people do all the time. In K-pop specifically, fans are accustomed to defending our idols from ignorance and xenophobia. However, the instinct to protect those we admire should not lead us to shut down critical discussions of their actions in the name of so-called loyalty. When we belong to a community that offers us support and enrichment, it is imperative that we also practice holding that community accountable.
Constructive criticism is not an attack on trust, and fans who are hurt and offended shouldn’t be made to feel guilty for their response. When we unconditionally defend the actions of our idols, we’re saying that loyalty trumps compassion, that defending powerful celebrities comes before listening to others.
We have to be prepared to accept that the people we love and admire (whether they are celebrities, or people we know in real life) have flaws. The nature of those flaws can tell us a lot about them, but how we choose to react when they are brought to light reveals much more about us.”

BLACK LIVES MATTER - RAISE AWARENESS
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was slowly and mercilessly killed by 4 Minneapolis police officers while being videotaped by concerned citizens begging them to stop. Floyd was surrounded and brutally dealt with by the police as Derek Chauvin’s knee pinned down his throat. Floyd kept screaming “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” but they didn’t listen. He then became unresponsive but was continually choked until his nose began to bleed, and his lifeless body was shoved into a stretcher and into the back of an ambulance.
The officers involved have been fired and the FBI has been called to investigate. But we must do our part to ensure that George Floyd receives the justice he deserves. Please sign these petitions addressed to the FBI, The President, The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, The Minneapolis Police Department, & DA Mike Freeman. An email on your behalf will be sent to all of the above. The lawyer representing Floyd’s family, civil rights attorney Ben Crump, urges us to call DA Mike Freeman (612-348-5550) and tell him to arrest and charge these officers for the Murder of George Floyd, I encourage you to do so.
