“Some poor lost soul had arrived  on these terrible shores before me. How much time had he --- or was it she? --- spent here? Weeks? Months? Years?” (282)
Pi finally reaches an island of algae after spending several weeks in the sea and is relieved. This relief is only short lived because he realizes the island is also carnivorous during the night. This conclusion was made after he found what he thought was a fruit from a tree. Upon opening the unusually light fruit, there was nothing but a human molar. This discovery also answers why there was dead fish in every pond he found in the island. This led him to leave the island and continue in the sea with Richard Parker.
“Once there was a madman in Australia who was a black belt in karate. He wanted to prove himself against the lions. He lost. Badly. The keepers found only half his body in the morning.” (36)
Pi’s father tells him of a man who lost a fight against a wild animal while attempting to prove himself. He does this previous to leaving a live in the same cage as the Bengal tiger they owned in the zoo to demonstrate to Pi and his brother the dangers of a wild animal. His father does this as a lesson after discovering Pi trying to feed the tiger with his arm in the cage. He demonstrates this gruesome example to make sure that Pi never forgets the fact that wild animals are dangerous creatures.
“People move because of the wear and tear of anxiety. Because of the gnawing feeling that no matter how hard they work their efforts will yield nothing, that what they build up in one year will be torn down in one day by others.” (79)
This is said in reference to the fact that Pi’s family is planning to leave India to Canada for better stability. I can tie this quote back to the carnivorous island later on in the book because Pi thought he had it all on that island but soon realized that he could not stay there forever or he would perish. Just as Pi’s family may have been stable for now, they knew it would not remain that way so they instead chose to move on.

The tiger, Richard Parker, is a metaphor for fear. It represents death, desolation, grief, and ultimately the growing animal instinct in Pi It brings to life the haunt of living alone on a ship.

“Quote”
“Without Richard Parker, I wouldn’t be alive today to tell you my story.”  This line is spoken by Pi approximately halfway through the book, in chapter 57. The “you” in this sentence is the author.  Pi relates his story over the course of many meetings in Canada many years after.. Of course, the “you” is also the reader, for Pi is aware that he is telling his story to a writer who has the intent to publish.

“Quotes
“I know zoos are no longer in people’s good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.”
Pi’s father has recently told us he runs the Pondicherry Zoo, a place that Pi considered paradise as a boy. Pi has heard many people say negative things about zoos—namely that they deprive noble, wild creatures of their freedom and trap them in boring, domesticated lives—but he disagrees. Wild animals in their natural habitat encounter fear, fighting, lack of food, and parasites on a regular basis. Given all these biological facts, animals in the wild are not free at all—rather, they are subject to a stringent set of social and natural laws that they must follow or die. Since animals are creatures of habit, zoo enclosures, with abundant food and water, clean cages, and a constant routine, are heaven for them.

This image depicts Pi as he is attempting to control a hyena that made its way onto the boat during the storm. Shortly after, the wild animal attacks the orangutan and zebra killing them both. This demonstrates the wild instincts of these zoo animals that have been kept under control for too long.
When the hyena attacks and kills the animals, Pi is surprised by the brutality of these animals. He couldn’t stand watching them kill each other. This is one of his first encounters with nature’s savagery in first hand.

I’m sorry to bring out the movie clip for this, but I thought this scene has enormous power for us to think about our barbarism, instinct, and desire; even how to treat them for our life. When Pi was young, he sneaked into the Richard Parker’s pen and tried to commune with him by feeding. The young Pi looked at Richard Parker’s eyes, and Richard Parker looked at Pi’s eyes as well. It seems like they were going to “face” each other. But suddenly, Pi’s father came and stopped Pi to treat Richard Parker as the friend. The Pi’s father says that’s Richard Parker is “something” we have to train and suppress. Well, is it?
The tiger(Richard Parker) is the Pie. By have a form of the animal, it clearly shows Pie’s barbarism, instinct, and desire. Lots of people say that we have to learn how to conceal and control that kind of things, just like Pi’s father. But that’s not it. Pi is the boy who keeps trying to look through himself. He was the one who actively wants the right of choice. And yes, he finally faces himself while he was drifting along the ocean, and find peace. He finally succeeded to look through Richard Parker and made a true peace between Richard Parker and Pit himself.

“Doubt is useful, it keeps faith a living thing” - movie -
When Pi said that "doubt is useful, it keeps faith a living thing" he meant that doubt is important in keeping faith alive. It helps you question and doubt your faith, and when your faith is proven to be true, it becomes that much stronger than what it was before. Faith is important to someone like Pi and when someone doubts him or his faith, he comes out and proves his faith is unbreakable and will not be broken.
“I thought I would run out of paper. It was the pens ran out.” - chapter 89 -
The pen is the desire for existence, and paper is the definite lifespan. Pi expected that he would always believe Gods to help him go through all the hardship (decides to keep hopes), but as time goes, he started to lose that hope, also the desire. It’s the most direct quote of the book, that shows Pi’s mindset. I believe lots of people will agree with that especially if they have wobblies. Pi’s journey can be the symbolizing factor for our own life.
“So tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you cant prove the question either way, which story do you prefer?” -chapter 99 -
“It happened; it happened.  Why does it have to mean anything?” - movie -
These quotes are the most important quote that clearly represents what the author was trying to say. He forced us to choose the story, saying that whatever we choose will be the one that’s true. But he never tells us “what really happened with Pi.” When lots of readers still ask Pi (the author) what the truce is, the new movie comes up and throw this quote. What does it matter? The pie was suffered in both story, and we can't find out why the ship sank into the ocean in both stories. We just have to choose one, no matter it’s true. For our own peace.
“Very few cathays can claim to have survived so long at sea as Mr. Patel, and more in the company of an adult Bengal tiger.” - chapter 100 -
In the end of the story, you will notice that those Japanese guys choose the story with animals to report. I’m pretty sure lots of people will make a same decision. Even though they didn’t really believe that story, even though they thought that story needs more probability to believe, they “choose“ to believe that story. Well, that’s how religions goes. You know what all kind of bible is saying is not that realistic. But still, people choose to believe that. For their own peace, so they can survice.

“At first I felt nothing. Suddenly a searing pain show up through my feet. I shrieked.” - chapter 92 -
When you finish the whole story, you will realize that there is two story about Pi’s drift. One with the tiger, and one with the cruel cannibalism… and Pi will force you to choose one story. But before you select one of the stories to believe, let's analyze both stories at first. Both stories go with the similar story flow, even though their characters are different. Tiger(Richard Parker) is Pie, a zebra is a Japanese sailor, the orangutan is Pi’s mother, and hyena is French cooker. It seems like animals are just one of the symbols for those human characters in the second story. Well, if you are the one who believed the second story, like me, do you know what algae island is symbolizing?
Lots of people say that it represents any religion around us. I totally agree with that idea (because this book was all about option and belief), but I just want to come up with the different approach. After I searched for other’s idea about that island, I realize that that island could mean something else than religion. It was Pi’s cannibalism. Cannibalism island and Pi’s cannibalism… do you saying that island is Pi himself, and Pi eat himself just like he ate algae and meerkats in the island? The answer can be yes, or no. Island can be interpreted as Pi’s inner side. When he eats a human body, and drink human blood, He can solve his hunger and thirst. After he solves those major two problems, it seems like everything is going to be okay as well. But when the night comes, everything change. When he woke up and see through the water, look through himself, he faces the monster. Pi starts to realize that he has done a cruel thing, he can’t live like that anymore. …. So he leaves the island. So he stops eating someone’s body, and say goodbye to all the meerkats- the disgusting maggots on the human corpse. Since I come up with the new idea, you have to choose again. If you already choose the second story, what would you choose for what this island is symbolizing? The religion? Or Pi’s cannibalism?

The orangutan in the story is a representation such as Richard Parker but in this case representing Pi’s mother. Orange Juice, is their name and is meant to also symbolize good in the world.
Orangutans are known to be very good mothers in real life actually. This going well as Pi was close to his mother for the time he could be. Orange Juice is later killed by the Hyena that is on this boat as well. With Orange Juice gone so is the symbol for peace and harmony.

In the book life of pi, there are four animals in the boat with Pi. There is a zebra, hyena, orangutan and a Bengal tiger. The Bengal tiger is the most important “animal” on the boat because it represents Pi and the other animals represent the three religions he is contemplating of what he wants to believe.
When he is on the boat, the Bengal tiger is suppose to represent Pi because throughout the story he is able to overcome fear by taking control of the tiger because in Pi’s mind that is suppose to represent fear in himself on the decisions he has to choose. When the tiger dies I think it represents death of the beliefs he wants to believe in but then decides to forget those.

Richard Paker is the tiger in the novel who is along for the ride with Pi. Pi finds himself stranded in the waters with a massive tiger who seems to eventually represent Pi himself in the form of an animal. The much more animalistic version of who Pi believes himself to be.
In further detail, Richard Parker although a previously encaged animal still has some animal tendencies as for he is a tiger. Pi is represented as this tiger for Pi eventually comes to his more animalistic senses when having to survive. He, a devout vegetarian begins to eat meat to survive. Killing all things he can get his hands on to ensure his survival, just as a tiger would in the wild.

The lifeboat not only represents the hope pi has for survival but also saved Pi’s life from sinking with the ship. when the ship was sinking the remaining crew planned to abandon everyone but as soon they saw a hyena the crewmen toss pi into the boat, hoping to feed the hyena. later on Richard saved his life  anyways The boat is a safe haven in which pi had food, water and other survival tools during multiple storms. Without these resources i’m pretty sure pi wouldn't have survive.
This lifeboat had a  book  called how to survive in the sea. thanks to this book Pi counted the days and was kept occupied to not think about the situation to much. this prevented pi from going crazy. Overall this boat helped him arrive to a Mexican beach  after not losing hope.-Julissa v

Pi practices three different religions which are Hindu, Islam and Christianity. Pi is Hindu but thinks it’s okay to believe in the other two religions because there’s a acceptance to all religions within Hinduism . He gets pretty much discriminated by his brother and others for participating in all religions. later on he asks his mother for a rug so he can pray everyday. When he starts attending to ceremonies people right away go tell  his mother that its not okay for him to go for one to the next. Also pi wants to get baptized to truly be engaged in his religions.
These three religions play a big role in the story since Pi knows how to combine these religions into one. This strong faith helped pi throughout his journey in the lifeboat through rough situations that helped him adapt and face challenges. The fact he didn't lose his faith helped him survive 227 days. His faith was tested when orange juice dies, he compares her body to Christs on the cross.
