K-Pop Spotlight: Stray Kids

Masks off everyone—Stray Kids’ newest mini-album ODDINARY is finally out and it’s time to embrace the maniac within. To celebrate the new release and their upcoming fourth anniversary, we caught up with the group to talk about their new album and single, MANIAC, and the challenges and fulfillment that come with accepting your most authentic self. As a little bonus, we also asked the members to design their own Tumblr blogs (just in case you needed some inspiration). Check out our full interview below!

Tell us about your new mini-album ODDINARY in three words or less, but there’s a catch—you can’t use the words odd or ordinary. 

Bang Chan: MANIACS ARE BACK!

Lee Know: Cool.

Changbin: Inner side, volcano, control.

Hyunjin: Super Power song.

HAN: Abnormal, freaky, potential are the three words that I think describe it best. We tried to describe the energy that explodes from our music in a different way this time, by slowly showing control over this energy. 

Felix: Maniac, unique, and dark.

Seungmin: Interesting, fascinating, capturing hearts.

I.N: Mania, abnormal, conceptual. 

Stray Kids’ music and concepts often encourage young people to be their most authentic selves regardless of other people’s opinions. How does ODDINARY fit into that narrative, and what do you hope your fans take away from it? 

Bang Chan: This might not apply to everyone, but I feel like many people have experienced moments where they’re told to act normal (yep, I’ve been through that). We wanted to emphasize that “standards” don’t matter and that you have the authority to let out the “oddness” that’s been sealed inside you all this time.

Changbin: ODDINARY is a compound word that combines “ordinary” and “odd,” meaning that everyone has a normal and slightly weird side. Listeners will be able to experience the everlasting honesty and truthfulness that Stray Kids’ music has always displayed, with the more crazy side that Stray Kids have. 

HAN: I hope that STAY and all listeners will be able to follow their hearts, rather than being confined by the judgment of others. I hope everyone also looks forward to the upgraded version of us. 

Seungmin: Whatever situation may come, I hope that everyone is able to live in their most honest, unique way with versatility while never forgetting who they truly are. I hope our music can become a small strength. 

Lightning round! You’re customizing your own Tumblr blog. Pick an aesthetic and a personal tag!

Bang Chan: Ooft… it’s hard to pick just one because my preferred aesthetics change depending on my mood. But if I had to pick one, it would be cyberpunk. The lights got me, and I’m a fanatic for futuristic stuff.

Lee Know: I want to decorate it using a clean, white tone.

Changbin: I want to use the tags #straykids, #stay, #stage, #music, which all mean a lot to Stray Kids.

Hyunjin: Vintage Tumblr, with #lovestay

HAN: I would like to decorate it like #black #chic to show a lot of calm yet cool atmosphere! I want to use the tags #black #chic #skz #loveyou #STAY.

Felix: #행복이 #felix 🐈‍⬛💛

Seungmin: #Seungtage. I really like vintage furniture and aesthetics, so I would like to decorate it using an organized brown tone.

I.N: I’m into vintage aesthetics these days, so I think I’ll go with vintage.

Hyunjin is home!! 😭

Mixtape: OH - I literally had to keep rewatching the mv multiple times because I couldn't hear how it sounded like due to all the CRYING. After like a few listens though (without sobbing in the middle), I finally was able to hear how beautiful it was. I spit out the ice cream i was eating when I saw the notification, hoping Hyunjin would be there. When I clicked the mv, I couldn't see him at first because he didn't appear on the screen, BUT THEN HE DID. I spit out my ice cream again and stood from the table then started crying. My parents got pretty pissed. I cried for a good 20 minutes. Ehem, anyway, to the real agenda. Everything about this song is perfect; the verses, the chorus, the pre-chorus. Did y'all hear Minho's voice? Ugh, amazing. Seungmin, Innie and Chan as well, oh my gosh, their voices are great. Changbin and Jisung's verses are great as always. Felix be getting that, let's go! Of course, HYUNJIN I MISSED YOU SO MUCH, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. I missed his voice so much, it was music to my ears. The song itself gave me 'B Me' vibes, which says a lot because it's connected to 'B Me' and 'On Track' haha. I love this song so much, it makes me feel things. I love the word play as well, "애" means child, which sounds like "愛" which means love. The song is basically about being clumsy and immature in front of the person they love. Overall, GREAT SONG GREAT SONG GREAT SONG GREAT SONG. 3RACHA NEVER DISAPPOINTS. STRAY KIDS NEVER DISAPPOINTS. Anyway, let's treat it like a comeback, stream!

Road Not Taken - It’s a short song but it’s sooo good. I love how all the members have lines and it each suits their voice very well. I love the bounce of the song and when I heard it the first time, I just had to listen to it again. I was kinda sad that it was like a minute long, but we got STOP after a few months, so yay!

Side Effects - I love how they brought back an old genre of music. I remember when I heard this song the first time on MTV, starting with the piano then transitions to like heavy instrumental(?), I immediately thought “oh, this is Stray Kids,” and I wasn’t even a STAY back then. Before I was even a fan of theirs, I already knew what kind of color they have on music. Anyway, the deep voices are a big YES, the rap verses and the whole song itself is astounding. I kinda don’t understand how some people didn’t like this song :((

TMT - My favorite song in this mini album. I really love the beat and the message of the song because it’s so relatable. The rap flow is so good, like it blends with the music. I still try to rap Felix’s, Changbin’s, Hyunjin’s, and Jisung’s parts because it’s so catchy. Seungmin outdid himself in this song, beautiful, likewise with Chan. The 2020 version of this song, Minho singing the pre-chorus and Jeongin singing the bridge was just—my heart literally flew away.

Mixtape 1 - The remake version of 3RACHA's 'Placebo' with all the members. For me, this is by far my favorite out of the five mixtapes, and all in all one of my favorite songs. It sounds very sparkly and poppy, and when I listen to this song, my lips just curl up in a smile. Minho's verse has gotta be my favorite, along with Felix's and the bridge. My favorite line has gotta be "cause later when I become addicted to life", I think it just hits hard. This song (along with that HDIGH episode) is how I learned what the placebo effect was.

Mixtape 2 - The remake version of 3RACHA's 'If There's a Shadow, There Must Be Light' with all the members. This is a very emotional song and when I watch the mv, tears just roll down my face. This is about how there is hope in everything, and for someone who easily loses hope in things, this hits me very hard. Listening to this song reminds me of how much they endured just to be where they are today, one of the reasons why I love the kids so much. I love the gentle flow of the song and it helps the song feel very heartfelt.

Mixtape 3 - The remake version of 3RACHA's 'For You' with all the members. MUST I even mention the "blessings waiting for you~" lines? They're pure perfection. As a student, and knowing this song is for the ones who are having a hard time in school, this hits way too close to home. I remember watching the mv a day before my classes started (10th grade in 2020) after an exactly two month break. I wasn’t really in the best place at that time and was very not ready to go back to classes. I cried while reading the captions because it was reassurance that I would be able to get through hard times. This song really helped me overcome that time and I moved to the next grade level! I made a report about one of the lines of this song and said the line was from this song, the question was “what is your life motto?” And I put, “For a flower to bloom, the winter has to pass.” Hardships will have great rewards.

Mixtape 4 - The remake version of 3RACHA’s ‘Broken Compass’ with all the members. The message of this song is amazing and the song itself is really good. Truly beautiful song and the mv was just so wholesome. i smile every time I listen to this song. Oh and Chan's part is just *chefs kiss*.

Happy anniversary to the beloved album in which the title track changed the kpop industry drastically! Stay or not, every kpop fan has to know God’s Menu. All must thank the amazing Hwang Hyunjin for suggesting and pushing to change the title track. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have this masterpiece.

GO LIVE - Y’all saw the unveil track to this, right? It is important to mention that the track was the first time I saw Minho’s arms. I was shookth when I saw them—Chan’s too. They all really had a look in this one, visual kings. I love the rap and the verses, and the unveil track itself, I really liked the transitions. This is the first part to another song, ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’ is the second part and it’s in the IN生 album, so you can see a full review there.

God’s Menu - The pioneer and what boosted Stray Kids’ popularity, your highness, God’s Menu. What more should I say? Everyone knows that this song is a masterpiece. Hyunjin, I love your taste, thank you so much for pushing the song switch. I loved it on the first listen, the fast raps then the transition to the mellow pre-chorus, then the buildup and the chorus. Ah, perfection. Of course, Felix’s iconic “cooking like a chef, I’m a five star Michelin,” even my autocorrect knows the lyrics. To think, we almost didn’t get this song… horrifying to think about.

Easy - Minho owned this song. I love the verses and every part of it was so catchy. The Changbin and Hyunjin rap duo is back, the exchanging in the second verse is sooo good. Jisung's first verse rap is just fire. Ah! Seungmin in the bridge! I love it! I love the pre-chorus. Jeongin and Minho executed it so well. The refrain was so good as well and the dance break itself was just great. I remember when Easy and God's Menu was a push-pull thing where Stays would claim they cheated on God's Menu for Easy and vise versa. There were many memes about it.

Pacemaker - I really love this song. I always thought Easy and Pacemaker were like peas in a pod, great pair. Whenever someone mentions Easy, I think of Pacemaker and vise versa. I am not smart on instrumentals, but I really like the beat of this song. It brings me a lot of energy, a song I would probably listen to on a run. Changbin’s dance break in the SKZ-X fan meeting performance was utter perfection. Go off king!

Airplane - This is such a good song. It’s so upbeat and uplifting. This song sounds super cute as well. The bridge was so perfect, and Felix in the pre-chorus was <3. The chorus is amazing and everyone did so well with their parts. I smile whenever I listen to this song. Okay and the way Minho says “my lover” in the bridge made me feel things.

Another Day - Han Jisung!!!! Outstanding work once again!! The melody was so soft, I relax to this every time. Although I am not a big fan of super mellow songs because it makes me sleepy, this one is just really good, like amazing. The vocals were so calming and so well executed. Ugh, so good (ᗒᗣᗕ)

Phobia - One of my favorite songs out of the bunch. To think they wrote this because they fear the fans would leave them. Stays would never T.T, who said we were leaving?! I love the trap sound to it, energetic yet nice to listen to. This song has one of my favorite bridges ever, like Minho, Changbin, Felix, Jeongin, then Jisung high note. Changbin and Felix shookth me with their rarely heard vocals, underrated vocalists. One of my favorite pre-choruses as well, like Jisung vocalist agenda in the building. Chan and Seungmin in the hidden vocals as well, amazing. Of course, Hyunjin was always good in his rap verses. One of their all-rounder songs for me. Last note, y’all heard Felix’s “stay” before the second chorus? I’m— *screech*

Blueprint - To this day, this song is on loop, and I don’t go a day without singing or listening to it. My family likes the song but they’re a little sick of hearing it everyday. It doesn’t matter though, still my favorite song in the album. The mv was just so aesthetically pleasing, like oh my god. This is where the vocalists really shine and the rappers get to still spit fire. This is definitely one of my favorite all-rounder songs. Everything in this song is perfect. I remember when I watched the unveil track and I just looped it for an hour, it was so addicting. When the mv came out, I was so happy, I took so many screenshots of it. Still cry over the beautiful vocals.

TA - After they dropped Blueprint and Easy mv, I was waiting for an mv for this song. We got nothing :) but they made it up with a dance practice instead, enough for me. Totally a song I’d party to, it’s like Miroh’s child. I really love this song, top five in this album for me. My favorite part has gotta be the second verse and the bridge, they executed those parts soooo well! (Still mourning the fact that there was no mv. We could’ve gotten better look at tattooed Chan and sunglasses Minho and well everyone’s look there was so good. We were robbed T.T)

Haven - This song is so good, even my sister likes it (she is not a kpop fan whatsoever). It’s so positive and uplifting, like I get a serotonin boost whenever I hear this song. Minho’s part in the second verse is— *breathe* AMAZING. Chan wrote this for Stays, Haven is basically a safe place. Chan makes me cry a lot just saying. The last part of the song, makes me jump around while shouting “OHHHHHHHH” you know, cause we are wild and free.

Close - This song is a masterpiece. I don’t know how many times I’ve said it, but I’m gonna say it again. THIS SONG IS A MASTERPIECE. When I heard it the first time, I felt nostalgic. I’m not even sure why, it was just so good. I love the message and the end part, “you had me at hello”, the goosebumps were real. I literally have a playlist where it’s just looping the whole song. One of my forever favorite songs. I made all my friends listen to it and all came back with good reviews. Chan and Jisung, I need this on Spotify. I don’t have enough words to express how much of an amazing song this is. When I envision the song, I see stars falling from the sky and hitting the ground with a sound (the sound that you hear at the back of the intro part, I think he used at glockenspiel for that part), does that make sense? Anyway, that’s what I see and how I feel when listening to ‘Close’. Again, M A S T E R P I E C E.

STOP - It was so genius of them to make a continuation for 'Road Not Taken' to create message. I love the bouncy-kind-of beat and the whole message of the song. I really like the Minho-Hyunjin-Jeongin-Chan -> Minho-Hyunjin-Jeongin-Felix part before the last part. I think that part sticks out for me.

Double Knot - OKAY, MINHO?? He served in this era. The rap verses were literal fire, like Changbin, Hyunjin, Jisung, Felix, what were y'all on? Love the pre-chorus as well. Overall, a bop. And this was the first like comeback I was a STAY in so this will always have a special place in my heart.

Levanter - Truly an underrated queen. Minho's and Seungmin's falsetto was just beautiful. Jisung vocals never fails to impress me, Jeongin bridge and Felix dance break! I don't get how this song has like so few views in comparison to other title tracks and SOME B-SIDES (looking at you 'Easy', but no shade, you're a bop too). Must I even repeat that everyone did SO WELL?!

Booster - One of my favorite Stray Kids songs to date. i kind of heard it for the first time and it just clicked with me. Maybe it's the pre-chorus--or the whole song itself, honestly though, I don't really know why. I just love the song so much.

Astronaut - It's so poppy and exciting, like I always get hyped up when I hear it. It's such a good song, even my non-stay friend likes this song. The teaser pictures for this mv as well, they look really good here. Oh, right, THE BRIDGE. The bridge of this song is amazing. I believe this is one of their like all-rounder songs (all-rounder song = amazing verses, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge and etc. I made the term up--).

Sunshine - *claps x88* Ah, Han Jisung did it again. I love the calm vibe of this song. I always listen to this song to relax myself. I love the fact that the rap is not-the-usual-aggressive-rap used in this song, but it was still fast. Okay, and they were all able to showcase vocals and I just love how they're all showing how all-rounded they are.

You Can STAY - I LOVE THIS SONG. Every STAY has gotta have this song in a special place in their heart. This song was written for and to us, and it's just such a good song! The verses, the pre-chorus, the chorus, the bridge! Another all-rounder song. I always cry listening to the song or watching the mv, crying while smiling though. I just feel so loved when listening to this song.

Mixtape 5 - The remake version of 3RACHA's Hoodie Season. It is such a good song. Should I even mention Hyunjin's iconic "hoodie hoodie naegen swimteo gatji, boogie, boogie ieopon kkopgo, dance groovy, groovy" and Chan's "hey baby, I'll make you my lover ey". The song is sounds so cute, and I did not know cute could be a sound now haha.
