That was, in fact, the exact conclusion achieved simultaneously by every dictator in the world after Gaddafi gave up his nukes voluntarily in 2003 and then was promptly lynched by a US-orchestrated coup (not even arrested, killed outright). For every non-US aligned regime in the world, possession of nuclear arms is an existential necessity on a very human level because otherwise the US can and will just kill them all, the actual people composing the government, and leave a permanent warzone in the aftermath, as seen in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc etc.

obviously to be clear you should care about us imperial aggression because of its victims, the people of the global south who are immiserated and murdered by it. but also if you are at all a fan of living on a habitable planet you should be deeply concerned by what it means for nonproliferation. how could any state that fears the us as a strategic threat, seeing what is happening in iran right now, not conclude that obtaining nuclear weapons is in fact a necessary priority

my friend used to say "punk is the worst thing to happen to anarchism since franco" and while that's wildly hyperbolic and i don't hate the punk scene at all there's like a kernel of truth in it because a vast majority of anarchist and leftist spaces are very subcultural, which does scare off a lot of people. Anarchism should be about including everyone, and sometimes that means giving up a filthy squat for a clean, wheelchair-accessible and kid-friendly space. It also means inviting other kinds of music and events in, it means giving a voice to your neighborhood and the kids from around the corner who have no other space to hang out without the cops bothering them, or the grannies who always wanted a garden. Sometimes it means a full or partial drug ban. And sometimes it means long discussions about feminism, anti-racism, and anti-homophobia with your out-of-scene visitors. Will it be worth it? Yes. I promise.

I know it might be tempting to do what you want to do and what's familiar, but truly successful community organizing always starts by asking "what do people around here actually need/ want and how can we work together to achieve it." So jump over your shadow, get out there and bring your damn neighbors together.

By virtue of his name and profession, Ice Pick Joe is a callback to the assassination of Soviet Bolshevik revolutionary Leon Trotsky. When Josef Stalin took power after Lenin’s death, Trotsky fell from grace – and boy did he fall hard. Exiled from the very nation he helped found, Trotsky ended up in Mexico, where he was murdered on Stalin’s orders in 1940 by an assassin wielding an ice pick.

Analyzing Goncharov (1973) through the lens of the Russian Revolution, we can see how Ice Pick Joe represents dashed idealism and the irony of fate. Here is a man who dares challenge the very system that produced him, a man who strives to break the cycle of violence that surrounded him since his birth. His only tool is that of destruction, an ice pick in his hand with which he tries to shape the world. 

However, if all you have is an ice pick, everything looks like a skull. The world he created for himself ultimately turns on him, casting him out. Exiled from society and written off as a criminal, Ice Pick Joe knows he can only find true freedom elsewhere. And yet – his attempt to escape on the boat and forge a new existence ends only in tragedy. He is cut down with his own tool, cursed to die by the very ice pick he once used to carve out his place in the world.

Metaphorically, Ice Pick Joe is both Trotsky and Trotsky’s assassin. He is the engineer of a revolution that devours him in the end. In reshaping the world, he reshapes himself…and in reshaping himself, he reshapes the destiny of every character in Goncharov.
