The reason why OFMD is such an amazing queer representation is because the least interesting things about those characters is them being queer. Or rather being queer is one of their caracteristics, as would be being tall or sweet or dumb. And where they really get smart with this is where they manage to subtly imply homophobia, making the characters rejected not directly for their queerness but for their caracteristics: for example Stede is not rejected by his peers because he is a queer man, he is rejected because he is sensitive, a dreamer, he wants to be a pirate. But underneath that we understand the real discrimination. This allows to show a variety of queer identities and the discrimination that goes for each one of them. So we get a show with multiple layers, a comedy that manages to criticize homophobia and rejection while showing us beautiful queer relationships (romantic or platonic), chosen family, the liberation linked to queerness (a lot of this is especially based on Izzy's speech btw) etc. Im personnaly a big sucker for media where queer stories aren't tragedies because they are queer, where the plot doesn't revolve over a character being out or not, but you can't talk about the queer experience without the discrimination that goes with it and OFMD manages to do both briliantly. It also shows us queer people while never turning them into caricatures, or comic relief (thinking about Lucius being effeminate and his relationship with Pete that is just absolutely adorable and relatable) anyways I could talk about this shows representation forever blablabla im done (for now)

Just realized it's the one year anniversary of the Ed/Stede/Zheng fic @petrichorca and I wrote, a little possibility in 2x8. Only time I've ever written Ed and Stede with anyone else but we needed to put these three badass captains together. Mind the tags on this one!
