Transferring to Pensacola Florida
We have about a month left in a prime of PCS (stands for permanent change of station) transfer period, with the peak of most moves occurring between May 15th throughout the 15th of August. This doesn’t mean that this is the only time that PCS relocation can occur since it’s an annual activity. With the military processing over 500,000 PCS moves yearly, more than half of those occur during the prime months mentioned earlier. As you can see even with the peak of the season drawing to an end, there’s a chance you or someone you know may be relocated to Pensacola, Florida and may have a lot of questions on your mind. You might already know, but Pensacola is home to the NAS, the National Aviation Museum and, the Blue Angels. There are 3 major bases in the area: - NAS Pensacola in Pensacola, Florida - Corry Station in Pensacola, Florida - Whiting Field NAS in Milton, Florida Corry Station is in the middle of the area, with NAS and Whiting Field within close proximity, if you choose to live in Pensacola or the surrounding counties (Cantonment, Gulf Breeze, Pace or Milton) you can access Pensacola NAS with light traffic in just under an hours time. If you happen to be attending flight school, and you’re going to be required to attend both bases then you may want to consider living in the Northeastern Pensacola area, or Pace which happens to reside between both bases. It also affords easy access to the I-10 to Milton, Florida’s Whiting Field, or travel down Pine Forest Road and have easy access to the back gate of Pensacola NAS, or use I-110 to conveniently get down and access the front gate. The same logic also holds true, as you could just as easily live a little further south in Pensacola and just travel on the I-110 or I-10 to get up to Milton! When choosing a place to call home, think of your commute and remember that most military clauses do not allow you to move from your rental home unless you are more than 30+ miles away from your new station. Now that you know how centrally located the bases are, and the best places to live in order to make for an easy commute, the next concern you may have may be about your children. Is it in a good neighborhood? Are the schools adequate for my child’s education? On average, Santa Rosa Schools tend to have better school rankings than the surrounding counties. The county of Santa Rosa encompasses Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Pace, and Milton, Florida and cities like Pensacola, Cantonment, Pensacola Beach, and Perdido Key belong to the jurisdiction of Escambia County. If you happen to be considering a property in Navarre, please remember that homes in this area go extremely fast due to it’s proximity to both bases. (Hurlburt and Whiting Field.)
