picking where to decorate had been half of the challenge. priestesses made reasonable wages, and even though locking herself away kept her from the things that tempted her coin back when she lived in the temple, it still wasn't enough to foot the inevitable bill required to decorate the elegant mansion that kissed the clouds. cassian had not developed a terribly elaborate plan; that seemed to be why she was there, in nesta’s and cassian’s private library. balancing on her toes atop a ladder, gwyn’s fingers gingerly positioned one end of a banner while her magic leveled the other. she must have been incredibly focused, because when a startled presence made itself known, she jumped. the ladder wobbled beneath her weight, and when her hands flew to catch herself on a bookshelf, the banner flitted to the ground. the stranger’s steady hand seemed to save her, and she braced her forehead against a shelf to steel herself for a moment before she finally turned to face her savior.
“oh, yes, thank you,” she assured as she looked down at the woman, genuine concern shining on her pretty face. something was vaguely familiar about her features, her creamy skin and gentle curves. like a doll. one that she had always wanted in her youth, but could never have. modesty mattered to the priestesses—not sexually, quite the opposite in that manner, actually. there were stereotypes of promiscuity about priestesses that she’d mostly outrun by now, though in that moment, she longed for the girl she’d once been who had once shamelessly flirted with strangers for sport. no, modesty was to come from an aspirational rejection of materialism. from not having. presently, she wasn’t fond of either iteration of the virtue as she realized how she must have looked, hands and arms sticky from crafting. vanity was viewed similarly. only then did she realize who the woman must be and her cheeks blossomed a soft spring peony shade.
gwyn blinked and started her way down the ladder. “it’s quite alright. i don’t break that easily,” she joked, smiling internally at how plainly true that was. “i haven’t been at it terribly long, but i don’t mind." though when she twisted toward the vast windows that overlooked the glory of the dusk-bathed mountains, she was proved to be a liar. “you…must be nesta’s sister? elain?”
@lightssung ✨
elain's excitement over birthdays had always existed. even when they had very little, she would try to make feyre and nesta's something special. even if that meant only being able to pick wildflowers for a bouquet or making sure there was some kind of sweet to eat. it was the tiniest contribution and neither of her sister's particularly cared for their birthdays but it was something in their world of nothing. now, between rhysand's wealth and elain's own creative ideas, the possibilities felt endless. decorations, the menu, what dessert would be served. she loved to plan it all; and after everything nesta went through in the last year, elain wanted to make the day special and full of appreciation for nesta. for who she was and how far she'd come.
she didn't expect to walk into the house of wind and find a redheaded priestess teetering on a ladder as she set up decorations. "oh my goodness!" elain shrieked, running over to support who she came to realize must have been gwyn; given her older sister's brief summation of details about her life over the last few months. nesta's fellow valkyrie had already done so much, and it was beautiful. "are you all right?" she asked. but when gwyn's gaze and smile settled, her grip nearly slipped from the glow that radiated from that smile, from those teal eyes that made elain yearn for a day spent in the sun and the sea.
"you shouldn't be doing all of this alone... if not for safety then surely for the fact that this is too much to do by yourself!" the seer scanned the room, noting the other decorations. how perfect they were, how there wouldn't be much space for elain to add very much of her own. "how long have you been here?"

Oh, I can't, stop you putting roots in my dreamland. My house of stone, your ivy grows, and now I'm covered in you...
For @gwynweekofficial, @freyjas-musings, @amandapearls, and I wanted to depict one of our favorite soft ships for unlikely pairings and star-crossed connections. Gwyn and Elain are survivors in their own respective rights. They're kind, they're fiercely loyal, and they don't let the circumstances they've found themselves in define them. If any two people could also find love and healing together, it would be them.
matty_shizhniy_art did a fabulous job with this piece, and we are genuinely so grateful to have worked with them!

honestly i think part of the reason i'm so obsessed with gwyn is that she's built on that triangulation (or more) character design structure I love so much, similar to matt murdock. her faith, her weird family life, how her trauma makes her think and behave, the paradox of how she views and uses violence. there are so many facets of her to dissect, and i know haters or whatever love to remind that she's only been here for one book as a side character (side is a stretch for acosf but whatever), but i'd argue that's even more impressive? we got a LOT of character in a very condensed amount of time. and that fascinates me.

We know that water nymphs of all dwellings are considered wild fae based upon how Gwyn's mother was considered too "untamed" to remain in the forest house, and while Gwyn's high fae traits are dominant, I think that still comes through in her personality. Her boldness, her intensity, her competitiveness, her surprisingly short temper despite her gentle nature. To a degree, some of her patience and gentleness are learned. Her mother was given to Sangravah to learn control and be domesticated, after all, which Gwyn and her sister would have learned as well. Just as how her high fae traits came through more obviously for herself than her sister, this adaptability was also much easier for Gwyn than her sister, whose nymph side was a touch stronger. In retrospect, she believes she took that for granted.

Gwyn and Catrin used to have conflict about a lot of things, but Gwyn was always jealous of how Catrin's nymph traits came thorugh stronger. She was never insecure about her lesser fae heritage, despite how many high fae continued to talk about them. After their mother passed, Gwyn searched for ways to be closer to her, and while she and Catrin had virtually the same face, she envied how her sister got their mother's webbed fingers, and how the stark contrast of her sister's features signaled their heritage a lot more obviously than with Gwyn. No high fae was going to mistake her scent or eyes for one of them, but, perhaps even delusionally, she had it in the back of her mind that if she ever left the temple to freely explore the world beyond, maybe she could convince her distant nymph relatives to embrace her (despite how they rejected her mother and grandmother). In this fantasy of hers, she was never going to be as convincing or easy to accept as Catrin, leaving Gwyn feeling very much in limbo. Between worlds.

The ancient language of the fae is actually an available area of study to priestesses—mostly for spells and rituals, most of which are entirely functional without any real understanding of the language, but it helps with interpreting (and appreciating) scripture.
Gwyn in particular has studied it casually and always tells herself she’ll dedicate her time to learning more thoroughly—never makes it very far, though, usually distracting herself with her million other tasks and studies. She can mostly only understand some basic vocabulary and doesn't understand tenses or conjugation or grammar rules well enough to speak it yet.
