poking around in some broadway tags and when exactly did it become normal to stick your illegally recorded bootlegs behind a paywall? like are y'all aware of how illegal that is? it is one thing to pirate media but it's another to profit off your piracy.

not ten years ago people were trading links to different recordings and posting them on youtube freely, when exactly did that stop being the norm? and to the people recording this shit, the choice to attend that show and risk your neck recording it was your choice. no one is holding your hand over hot coals and forcing you to do that. you know it's illegal, you know it's risky, you know there's a 30% chance that at any time patti lupone will emerge from the shadows to scream at you about it, but that does not mean you're entitled to financial compensation about it.

and again I cannot stress enough how much this is not legal. you're asking people to pay you for bootlegs no one is technically allowed to possess. and while there isn't much danger in these kinds of illegal downloads, there might be a little more danger to your posted website, or to your transaction history. I'm not saying it's a lot of danger, the feds have better things to do, but honestly. anyone could report you at any time and be completely justified in that. and you people have the audacity to try and profit off that??

broadway shows are already so inaccessible to most. charging people twenty bucks or more for a shitty bootleg taken from someone's phone is just the bottom of the barrel. it's cruel, it's wrong, and you're only adding to the problem of the financial barrier of entry to theater.

and again, just in case it wasn't clear enough, it's fucking illegal.

I can't stop thinking about the way sutton performs poor thing, especially the "they figured she had to be daft you see/so all of them stood there and laughed you see"... (skip to 12:59)

I've seen/heard several takes on those lines, ranging from gossipy (lansbury) to sympathetic (bonham carter/and I'd argue ashford) to contemptuous (lupone 2001) and dismissive (lupone 2005), but I've never heard angry before. and sutton foster sang those lines angry. and while I think every version of mrs. lovett feels at least a little bit of pity for lucy, I've never heard any of them sound angry on her behalf.

there's something about a version of this character being played in a post "me too movement" world. something about the female rage of it all. the way she practically growls the word "laughed", like...I've never seen an actress approach the song this way. and I love the nuance it creates for the character, who obviously will go on to confirm that sweeney is in fact benjamin barker in approximately 30 seconds and proceed to lie to him about lucy's fate so she can keep him for herself. she's far from a good person and far from a friend to lucy. and yet for just a moment, she shares that collective feeling of anger at the assault of another woman. and like. I felt that.

Things Azula antis don't want to hear but need to:

Azula is a fictional character. She does not have schizophrenia, or narcissistic personality disorder. And were she real, she would not be diagnosed with either of those things because A. she is not even close to meeting the criteria and B. she is a minor. Stop armchair diagnosing cartoon characters because you read an article on Web MD.

Most of the things Azula did were acts of self-preservation, or to protect her family and her nation.

It is asinine to blame a 9 year old for having a poor relationship with her mother.

Azula is not a "psychopath" or a "sociopath". No one is. Those are loaded, ableist terms used against people who have or exhibit symptoms of Cluster B personality disorders.

Azula loves her dad and brother. Period. I don't care if you don't agree, the literal creators of the show say you're wrong.

Azula did not commit "war crimes". The Geneva convention does not exist in atla and even if it did, she hasn't done anything that would violate it. And even if she did, she is quite literally a child soldier. Child soldiers cannot and should not be held accountable for such things.

Plenty of highly intelligent people end up getting sucked in to cults because they just wanted people to hang out with. There are antivaxxer nurses. Your ability to act on empirical reason breaks down fast if your social and emotional needs aren't being met.

I don't get to see these too often because they're expensive and the tickets can be hard to justify, but I just had to see this revival of sweeney todd before it closed, so I went ahead and sprung for it with some of my tax refund money and oh my god so worth it. aaron tveit and sutton foster were fantastic in the lead roles. and I'm familiar with this show, I've seen several of the recorded stage productions (mostly the one with angela lansbury tho) but the brilliant thing about stage shows is that every performer and director adds something new to it. and I don't want to say sutton is out-doing the late great angela lansbury, but damn she's probably the funniest version of mrs. lovett I've ever seen. just. I was dying. and aaron played off her beautifully.

absolutely worth the money.
