The legendary director wrote a glowing review of Ti West's new horror film, Pearlstarring Mia Goth and sent it to A24, and /Film published it later. Goth plays the title role of a young woman who lives with her sick, paralyzed father and overbearing mother on their Texas farm. She is a prequel to West's previous A24 film, Xwhich premiered earlier this year. In the review, Scorsese praised, “Ti West's films have an energy that is all too rare these days, fueled by a pure, undiluted love of cinema. You feel it in every frame." He continued: “Pearl is a wild, fascinating and deeply, no kidding, disturbing 102-minute experience. West and his muse and creative partner Mia Goth know how to play with their audience…before they plunged the knife into our chests and started twisting it." Related 11 Horrible Scenes That Nearly Ruined Great Movies Fights, love affairs and total chaos is the norm in almost all film sets, not only in 'Don't Worry Darling' Brendan Fraser "sobbed" during the six-minute standing ovation at the Venice screening of 'The Whale' “I started out enthralled, then disturbed, then so restless that I had trouble falling asleep. But I couldn't take my eyes off [de la película]”. Scorsese isn't the only fan of West's work. yesThey faced the media around the world looking like sneaky teenagers who had been caught doing something very naughty on a school field trip. When Olivia Wilde and the cast members of her new movie Don't Worry Darling held a press conference in Venice earlier this week, it was quite a complicated affair for everyone involved. What should have been a moment of celebration turned into an ordeal. Pop star-turned-actor Harry Styles, well accustomed to tabloid scrutiny, squirmed uncomfortably. Chris Pine looked down. Wilde smiled sadly. The thriller Wilde's dystopian science fiction has been the most debated film of the festival that ends this weekend. However, the focus was not on the performances or the boldness of the director's aesthetic decisions. Instead, everyone is talking about the behind-the-scenes chaos: the alleged romance between Wilde and his leading lady, Styles, the tensions between cast members, disputes over salary and status, and why the star Florence Pugh did not appear at the press conference. The film was screened shortly before the premiere at the Venice Film Festival of Blonde, by Andrew Dominik, his Marilyn Monroe biopic, based on Joyce Carol Oates' book about the star. After all, Monroe, played by Ana De Armas, was involved in many Hollywood productions that were even more tense behind the scenes than before. Don't Worry Darling. Monroe was a victim of the Hollywood system. Her studies used her, abused her and then spat on her, but when she was in a set of cinema, he always left chaos in his wake. “He was perfectly unpunctual. He was never once on time…she could always be counted on…to be late,” Billy Wilder told biographer of him Charlotte Chandler after working with Monroe on The Seven Year Itch Y Some Like it Hot. Monroe distracted her co-stars and the director. He would stay in his trailer for hours while everyone else got ready to roll. Tony Curtis remembered that when he dressed as a transvestite in Some Like it HotMonroe made him wait for hours in high heels and a metal jockstrap that prevented him from urinating. Therefore, he "assembled a funnel and a hose" that allowed him to "do my business without going to the bathroom." Curtis had had an affair with Monroe, but still made his famously vulgar comment about her that romantic scenes with her were like "kissing Hitler." In the case of Monroe, Wilder always insisted that "it was worth the agony of working with her" because the results were ultimately very spectacular. “She didn't know her lines. It's terrible. Then on the thirtieth take, she was saying it like no one else could." Monroe's pranks were nothing more than an extreme version of what happens in almost every sets of cinema, not only in Don't Worry Darling either Some Like it Hot. This is nothing new in the world of cinema, although we do not always hear about it. Well-paid, handsome actors with big egos, cooped up together far from home, often have affairs, start fights, and spend their free time drinking themselves into a stupor or, like Monroe, hiding in their trailers. Florence Pugh at the premiere of Don't Worry Darling at the Venice Film Festival, where there were hints of a feud between her and director Olivia Wilde (Getty Images) “People are very difficult in movies…always!” Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas once told me. “Everyone misbehaves, or most misbehaves. You have to keep that in mind... if you're going to get mad at everyone who's difficult in the movies, you're not going to have any friends left in the world." Boredom can lead actors to set to behave very strangely. In his 2002 memoirs, You're Only as Good as Your Next OneHollywood producer Mike Medavoy writes about the epic “prank war” between Sean Penn and Woody Harrelson on the set of Terrence Malick's war epic The Thin Red Line. They shot in the Solomon Islands and in the remote interior of Australia. Penn began posting flyers around town announcing a "Woody Harrelson Day" during which Harrelson would sign autographs for $10 each.
Hundreds of people came from all over to get his signature. Harrelson responded with an elaborate prank that ended with Penn running for his life, convinced the police were about to shoot him. Harrelson filmed his partner in his moment of greatest terror and then taunted him with the image. Penn went further with his next tactic, leaving Harrelson "marooned in the rain forest in the middle of the night with no food, no water, and no way home except on foot." There was only a 40-mile (64-kilometre) walk to the set. Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis on the set of Some Like It Hot in 1959 (Moviestore/Shutterstock) Harrelson and Penn were supposed friends. His antics were funny, albeit with a touch of humor. There are many other cases in which the actors detest each other. In that case, the film sets become battlefields. Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were in the twilight of their careers when they were cast in Robert Aldrich's film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Davis plays Baby Jane Hudson, a former child actress who takes sadistic pleasure in tormenting her wheelchair-bound sister Blanche (Crawford). When Davis kicks and punches Crawford on camera, she doesn't hold back. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? it is based on malice and cruelty, and it works. The two stars gave grotesque and self-parodic performances, but the public, knowing their hatred for each other, totally bought it. The real-life feud between Davis and Crawford became one of the film's biggest commercial hooks. The real feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? in 1962 it became one of the biggest commercial hooks in the movie (Moviestore/Shutterstock) It is a lesson that Warner Bros can learn from when it comes to releasing Don't Worry Darling. A little chaos and controversy on set can boost a movie's profile, especially when all the gruesome details are leaked into the media. Styles and Pine aren't exactly Crawford and Davis, but spitting on your rival at your movie premiere, as Styles apparently did, is straight out of the BabyJanealthough sources close to Styles told The Independent that the spit claims were not true On the other hand, the history of cinema also shows that the most problematic productions are sometimes the most successful. From Francis Ford Coppola, who seemed to lose his mind in the Philippines during the filming of apocalypse noweven James Cameron, who struggled to finish titanica on time, chaos does not necessarily mean disaster. Wizard of Oz It was not an easy film to shoot. "They were little drunks... They got drunk every night and collected them in butterfly nets," Judy Garland complained about the disruptive behavior outside filming hours of the "little characters" who played the Munchkins in the land of Oz . Gone with the Wind also had its fights behind the scenes. Directors were fired, actors had affairs, there were nervous breakdowns, and black cast members were discriminated against. However, both were one of the biggest hits in Hollywood history. jaws, by Steven Spielberg, was a production famous for its problems. The lead actors, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw, harassed each other relentlessly, the shark model didn't work well, and the production ran over time and budget. However, it became a huge success and ushered in a new era of summer blockbusters. There was an epic prank war between Sean Penn and Woody Harrelson on the set of Terrence Malick's war epic The Thin Red Line in 1998 (Moviestore/Shutterstock) books like Easy Riders, Raging Bullsby Peter Biskind, and You'll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again, by Julia Phillips, suggest that no self-respecting director in the 1970s would even conceive of making a movie if it didn't have a healthy dose of fighting, sexual antics, drug use, and backstage brawling. Filmmakers like Coppola, William Friedkin and Martin Scorsese took advantage of all the turmoil to tap into their creativity.
illicit relationships in the set they are common and do not necessarily affect a film. Long before Styles got involved with Wilde in Don't Worry DarlingRichard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, both already married, shocked and moved the media around the world with their romance during the filming of Cleopatra (1963). This is a highly troubled production that took years to complete. It was described as "the biggest flop in the history of cinema", with a budget that, in current figures, is equivalent to about US$350 million. It was about to put 20th Century Fox out of business. However, the Egyptian epic ended up getting its money back. In the end, Burton and Taylor were also very good at the box office. Styles and Wilde still don't have the same resonance. A key difference between Don't Worry Darling and all those other movies where pandemonium has reigned behind the scenes is that it was made in the era on-line. “As for all the endless tabloid gossip and noise out there, I want to say that the internet feeds on itself. I don't feel the need to contribute. I think she is already very well fed," Wilde said during Monday's press conference in Venice. However, actor Shia LaBeouf's email to the director, in which she referred to her firing from the film as an "attractive clickbait”, hinted that Wilde was busy fanning the gossip herself to ensure her film received attention. The director had declared to the newspaper Variety that LaBeouf's "fighting energy" was not "conducive to the best performances" or the "safe, trusting environment" he wanted to create in the studio. set. In retrospect, his words seem very ironic. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor thrilled the media around the world with their romance on the set of Cleopatra in 1963 (Getty Images) Of course, the current hysteria online is in keeping with the theme of the film. It is a story about an alternate reality in which the protagonists refuse to live in the "real" world. By immersing themselves in gossip and ignoring the actual film, the journalists and fans behave exactly like the characters in the film trying to escape into their own dreamlike existence. It doesn't matter anymore if all those toxic stories leaking out about the production are true. Don't Worry Darling It's one of those movies where the off-camera theater is so much more compelling than anything we see on screen. Regardless of how it does at the box office when it opens later this month, it's already given us the biggest soap opera drama of the year. Don't Worry Darling” opens on September 23 and the Venice Film Festival runs until September 10.

"Dead timeline?" asked a viral tweet in September. "Here's a reminder that this trailer exists." "Yes, his Oscar is serious," said another. “I wish you all a very happy 'watch this trailer at least five times today' day,” read one more. You might expect to see these kinds of tweets after the release of a trailer for a Netflix movie, maybe one set in a high school, or maybe one starring Gen-Z icon Zendaya, but not about a trailer for a historical drama about British royalty, as were these tweets related to the film Spencer. To make that assumption, however, would be to ignore the growing popularity, nearly 25 years after her death, of the woman at the center of the film: Princess Diana. When the first full trailer for spencer In September, the excitement of young people on social media was palpable. Starring Kristen Stewart as the late princess, the drama takes place over a weekend in 1991 as Diana plans to end her marriage to Prince Charles. Stewart has long been a favorite of teenagers thanks to the movies of Twilightbut the anticipation spencer it was caused by both the village princess figure and her. Despite the fact that most members of Generation Z, broadly defined as those born between 1997 and the early 2010s, had not even been conceived when Diana died in a car accident in Paris in September 1997, the late royal is enjoying an explosion of popularity among young adults. Countless Facebook groups have been created in her honour, with young people flocking to sing her praises, affectionately nickname her “Ar Di”, the way a grandfather might refer to a family member, and share their fair share of memes. at the same time. The most prominent group is “Princess Diana-Let's Keep Her Memory Alive (NO TROLLS ALLOWED),” which has almost 45,000 members, most of them willing to play along. A scan through the group shows posts with a sentimental tone (which we could attribute to more traditional monarchists), interspersed with others with a satirical and absurd tone. There are images of random celebrities, like Denise Welch or the contestant from XFactor Eoghan Quigg, published under the guise of depicting Diana herself, or puzzling finds made from charity shops and forgotten treasures commemorating her marriage. In essence, the posts mimic “boomerspeak,” or the way baby boomers (defined as those born between the mid-1940s and mid-1960s) are perceived to communicate online, combined with the memes often absurd and deliberately ironic so dear to Gen-Z. Of course, every post comes with a dose of love, it's just expressed in a roundabout way that may not be obvious to people on the outside. Some of those people are also within these groups: unsuspecting monarchists who often don't understand the affectionate humor of Diana's younger fans. These contrasting expressions can lead to hilarious misunderstandings, which are often screenshotted for posting on other social networks. At about the same time as the fandom contemporary of Diana, fictionalizations of the princess have been made in film and television. the Netflix series The Crown It has been a great success, thanks to which Emma Corrin has received applause for her portrayal of Diana in its fourth season, which premiered a year ago. Her performance spawned a number of memes, most notably a moment in the season's third episode when Prince Charles, played by Josh O'Connor, proposes to Diana, and the camera zooms in on Corrin's smiling face. and his eyes move left and right; It turned out to be perfect meme material: The original clip received more than 2.5 million views in one day when it was posted on Twitter. This was not the first time that digital culture and the fandom of Diana were found. In 2017, a Twitter user named @Deno_Tron went viral when he designed a Princess Diana shrine in her roommate's bedroom just as he was about to return with a date. An image of said shrine (which included candles, photos of Diana, and a collage of images of her roommate
and the princess on top of a caption that read “Lovers separated by time and circumstance”) proved to be a hit with tweeters. , and, from there, the approach to the memory of the princess seemed to evolve towards the fandomdi-hard that we know today. This has happened thanks to the spread of sincere, if strange, declarations of Diana-love, which originate in specialized Facebook groups before landing on Twitter, Reddit or sites dedicated exclusively to memes. One that is often shared and re-shared is that post with images of a Diana memorial plate decorated with food, with the late princess sporting a mashed potato hairstyle and tomato earrings. "I like to use my Princess Diana plate but I never cover her beautiful face, kisses," she reads in the accompanying caption. The fandom de Diana has become a real community, albeit a bit strange. But is it all pure irony? Or is it true love? For Jordan Taylor-O'Neill, a 23-year-old Diana fan, it's a bit of both. "My love and respect for Diana is absolutely real, but the way I express it is very tongue-in-cheek," she says. “I have always respected her, but she has become more exaggerated as memes have become more common and people have learned more about her life as a result.” “While the 'Ar Di' memes may seem insensitive or rude to some die-hard royal fans, this is nothing to criticize,” says Bethan McConnell, a Diana fan and member of the group. “If you're watching 'Ar Di' on your feed every two days, it is proof that people are still worried about her. You're going to have some member who is a staunch monarchist and sees the whole thing as disrespectful, but I think that's the point." “People are basically making fun of older people posting dramatic three-page tributes every time the Queen has a birthday, or how much they love to watch [su] speech on Christmas Day,” he continues. “I don't think this kind of thing is much different, except it's more fun. As the title of the group says: 'Keep his memory alive'”. This affectionate teasing, very much a form of love, is "an interpretation of how our moms love 'Ar Di,'" thinks 24-year-old Harry Jones. “The national outpouring of grief when she died speaks for itself. People felt they knew her. And that's why I think Gen Z sees it and takes it as an extension of the act of picking on the previous generation." Harry Jones wrapped in his Princess Diana sheet (Harry Jones/@harryjonesxx) But for all the tongue-in-cheek humor surrounding the late princess, is this rooted in something more serious as well? Young people in the UK are overwhelmingly left-leaning (more than half of those under thirty voted Labor in 2019, with just over a fifth supporting the Conservatives), and though Diana was hardly a Che Guevara, her legacy has almost become a cause celebre for progressive young Britons who see her, like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, differently from the rest of the royal family. Her love for Diana is a way of expressing her disillusionment with the powers that be for her. "She was a familiar face in an institution that many of us can't relate to," says Jordan. “She stood up for causes that matter to our generation at a time when she wasn't as acceptable. She broke traditions and looked good doing it; she was the closest real-life example of the Disney princesses we grew up idolizing.” Part of her relatable and anti-establishment nature was Diana's commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, at a time when it was far less acceptable to be a true ally. "Community [LGBTQ+] gravitates towards strong women who don't conform," says Harry. “Diana's work supporting people living with HIV-AIDS was also very important at the time. The stigma surrounding it in the 1990s devastated the community, so seeing a royal go into a hospital and hug HIV/AIDS patients was groundbreaking. There's still a lot of work to do on the stigma, but I like to think that Diana really helped challenge it at the time." There's also the famous anecdote
that Freddie Mercury once slipped Diana into a gay bar in disguise, and it's perhaps safe to assume that she would approve of being played by prominent performers. queer like Stewart and Corrin. Both performances only further cement the princess as an icon. queer. Also evident is the fact that people can shape their vision of Diana however they want. When she died, Diana not only became an icon queer, but a revolutionary of the monarchy, an instagrammable inspiration and a figure of almost universal admiration. "Loving Princess Diana is one of the few views that is shared by the majority of Britain," says Jordan. “The exaggerated way in which [la Generación Z] talk about her is satire, a way of copying how monarchists talk about the rest of the royal family, but that doesn't make our love for Diana any less genuine."

Daniel Craig recalled a "very funny" joke that Queen Elizabeth II once played on him in private. On Thursday, September 8, the royal family announced that the queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral, aged 96. The James Bond star was one of the first celebrities to pay tribute to the late royal. Elton John, Janet Jackson and Victoria Beckham are among the other celebrities who remembered the queen after the news of her death. Before her death earlier this year, Craig recalled meeting the queen as they filmed a hilarious sketch for the 2012 London Olympics. During a participation in The Late Showthe actor said that the 95-year-old woman was “very funny, if she wanted to make a joke, she would do it on me”. Craig added: "We were having our picture taken, and she just said, 'Oh no, he's the one not smiling.' Host Stephen Colbert asked Craig what the queen's corgis were like. "I was playing on the floor with them most of the time," the actor said. “I mean, they're just there. I think they have their own servants. They are very friendly.” (BBC) In December 2021, Craig was awarded the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in the New Years Honors List, an honor usually awarded to diplomats and spies. It is the same honor given to his character James Bond, whom he played from 2006 to No Time to Die from last year. The honor bestowed on Craig recognizes service in a foreign country, or in connection with foreign and Commonwealth affairs, such as the work of diplomats abroad. The fictional spy has the same Order in Ian Fleming's books as well as his film adaptations.

Social networks have been awash with rumors about a dispute between the director of Don't Worry DarlingOlivia Wilde, and its star, Florence Pugh. However, a clip shared by the film's official Instagram account did not match internet gossip. Wilde and his cast, including Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Nick Kroll, arrived at the Venice Film Festival on Monday (September 5) for the film's premiere. The production received a five-minute standing ovation after the screening and, in a video shared by the official instagram account Don't Worry DarlingPugh and Wilde can be seen leaning behind Styles Pine and Chan to applaud each other for their work. Pugh was particularly absent from the earlier news conference, according to scheduling conflicts, where Wilde was asked about rumors of a fight between her and Pugh. “[Pugh hace] amazing job on the movie and as for all the endless tabloid gossip and all the noise out there, well, the internet feeds itself. I don't feel the need to contribute, I think he's well fed enough," Wilde replied. Reports of a fight between the director and the actress escalated in August after Wilde to claim he fired LaBeouf in 2020 to create a "safe and trusting environment" on set for Pugh. However, LaBeouf denied being fired and sent Variety a video he claims to have received from Wilde, in which the director asks him not to abandon the project. The cast of 'Don't Worry Darling' in Venice (AP) Alluding to the tension between LaBeouf and Pugh in the video, Wilde says that LaBeouf's departure "could be a wake-up call for Miss Flo." The Pugh's stylist sarcastically echoed the nicknamewho shared photos of the actress at the Festival with the caption “Miss Flo.” Not even the film's premiere screening itself was drama-free, as people speculated that Styles spat on Pine when he sat next to the actor. However, sources close to Pine and Styles have told The Independent that the claims that there was spitting were not true. Don't Worry Darling seems destined for infamy, even though the movie hasn't been released yet. The sci-fi psychological thriller, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, premiered this week at the Venice Film Festival, amid mounting reports of behind-the-scenes chaos. From an alleged "feud" between the director and the star of the film, to a dispute over a controversial departure from the cast, Don't Worry Darling has had a truly hellish promotional campaign. Nevertheless, Don't Worry Darling It is not the only film whose premiere has been affected by a poorly managed promotional campaign. Whether it's blockbusters or indie gems, sometimes just one wrong interview is enough to spark a wave of bad, or at least bizarre, publicity. Here are five of the most disastrous movie campaigns in movie history. War of the Worlds (2005) The promotional campaign for the brilliant adaptation of War of the Worlds Steven Spielberg's film took a turn towards the surreal when its star, Tom Cruise, participated in an interview on Oprah. On the talk show, Cruise declared his love for Katie Holmes, the actress from batmanbegins whom he was then dating (and who would later become his wife, before divorcing in 2012). He then started jumping on Oprah Winfrey's furniture. The couch-hopping incident was the most notorious in a series of regrettable public appearances Cruise had in the run-up to the film's release. On the other occasions he got into a fight with Matt Lauer during an interview on TodayShow in 2005, and lost his composure to a prankster from Channel 4 who gently sprayed his face with water. Tom Cruise jumping on the couch in the famous interview with Oprah (YouTube.screengrab) According to a 2007 article in Vanity FairSpielberg disapproved of Cruise's follies, considering that he had damaged the expectations of the film. Two Lovers (2008) Joaquin Phoenix's interviews around the premiere of the 2008 romantic film Two Loversby James Gray, could be kindly described as “erratic”. He swore he would never act again, said he wanted to pursue rap music, and showed up on David Letterman's talk show barely saying a word. At the time, people suspected that Phoenix was going off the rails: Two Lovers was almost completely forgotten in all that noise. Joaquin Phoenix poses dispassionately in front of a poster for his movie 'Two Lovers' in 2009 (Getty Images) Ultimately, however, there was a reason for all this: Phoenix was deliberately playing his character off-screen as part of a separate film project, the mockumentary film. I'm Still Here. tower heist (2011) The day of the premiere tower heist in the United States, the film's director, Brett Ratner, appeared on Howard Stern's radio show. The interview sparked widespread rejection of certain moments, such as when Ratner bragged about his sexual prowess and talked about having sex with Lindsay Lohan. That same day, Ratner attended a screening of the film, where he said, "Rehearsals are for f*ckers." He apologized for the homophobic slur, but the scandal dented expectations of tower heist. Ratner stepped down as producer of the Oscars, and the film's star, Eddie Murphy, resigned as host shortly after. In 2017, Ratner was accused of sexual misconduct, including some allegations of rape and sexual assault, by multiple women. Ratner denied all allegations. Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy in 'Tower Heist' (Universal Pictures) melancholy (2011) The landscape of melancholyLars Von Trier's art drama about depression and the end of the world, once held promise. However, at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, Von Trier shocked the audience when he started joking about casting Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the stars of melancholyin a pornographic movie. He then spoke of his own Germanic heritage, joking about Jews, Nazis and "understanding Hitler" before infamously declaring, "I am a Nazi." Von Trier at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011
(Getty Images) The joke, naturally, did not strike a chord with those in attendance, and the festival apologized later that day and barred von Trier from the Festival Palace. Cold Pursuit (2019) Liam Neeson completely derailed the promotional campaign for his 2019 revenge thriller, Cold Pursuitin an interview for The Independent. the protagonist of Schindler's List has opened up about a past incident in which he reportedly walked the streets with a "truncheon" for several days to kill a "black bastard" after someone in his inner circle was raped. The red carpet premiere of “Cold Pursuit” was canceled due to the resulting controversy, and the film was completely overshadowed. Don't Worry Darling (2022) The history of the turbulent promotional campaign of Don't Worry Darling it is probably too long and convoluted to go into detail here. At the beginning of the project, Shia LaBeouf was replaced by Harry Styles. Director Olivia Wilde later claimed that she had fired LaBeouf from the project to make sure Florence Pugh felt "safe." LaBeouf denied it, sharing a video from that time in which Wilde appears to ask him to stay with her, referring to Pugh as "Miss Flo." In 2021, reports surfaced that Wilde and Styles were romantically involved. Wilde adamantly denied rumors of a huge salary disparity between the two leads. Harry Styles and Florence Pugh in 'Don't Worry Darling' (Warner Bros) Controversies began to grow during the film's premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. The first news that caught the eye was that Pugh would not be attending the press conference. (It was later clarified that this was because his flight landed afterwards.) Pugh and Wilde's stylists seem to have gotten into their clients' drama. Videos have gone viral in which Chris Pine seems to tune out during the film's press conference and at the premiere that same night. Most shocking was a video taken at the festival, posted by Twitter user JZMaclin, in which Styles is allegedly seen "spitting" on Pine as he takes his assigned seat next to the actor, though this has been disputed by many commentators. In Internet. Don't Worry Darling opens in theaters on September 23.

Chow the new has reminded us spinoff of game of Thrones, Westeros and incest go together like brother and sister. Since that is the case, it may not qualify as spoilers reveal that inbreeding rears its misshapen head in the second episode of House of the Dragon. But if you haven't seen the episode, and would like to save the incestuous plot twist for when you see it, read on. First, a quick reminder of the incest we've encountered before in Westeros. game of Thrones It began with Bran Stark observing the incestuous kisses of Jaime and Cersei Lannister, twins who were themselves the product of Tywin Lannister's marriage to Joanna Lannister, his cousin. Tywin and Joanna's marriage, by the way, doesn't count as incest in the eyes of Westeros, just as marriage between cousins, in the real world, has usually been acceptable. We will focus today on even closer interrelationships. Cersei's three children, supposedly fathered by her husband King Robert, were actually Jaime's children. The eldest, Joffrey, was an evil sadist, much like several members of the Targaryen family that Robert and Jaime had dethroned. Jaimie killed the "Mad King," Aerys Targaryen, whose madness (she became obsessed, we're told, with burning people alive) is attributed in the show to centuries of Targaryen inbreeding. "Every time a new Targaryen is born," says King Jaehaerys, "the gods flip a coin and the world holds its breath to see how it will land." As far as the Targaryens are concerned, the advantages of inbreeding are obvious. Not only can the family buy in bulk the same peroxide-free shampoo that doesn't damage hair, but it also keeps its power concentrated instead of scattered. It happens over and over again, deliberately and accidentally. Jaeherys's descendant, Daenerys Targaryen, as viewers of game of Thrones, escapes a troubled relationship with her brother, Viserys, and ultimately sleeps with Jon Snow, the bastard son of a nobleman from the other side of Westeros. Somehow, in Jon, Daenerys has inadvertently found her long-lost nephew. It is a family tradition as old and well maintained as riding dragons. It's a tradition that reappeared in last night's episode of House of the Dragon. King Viserys (an ancestor of the aforementioned Viserys) is offered the hand of Lady Laena Velaryon shortly after the death of his first wife. Laena is not only 12 years old, but she is Viserys's niece (Viserys's grandparents are Laena's great-grandparents, Laena's mother is Viserys's cousin. Viserys and Laena are not very close uncle and niece). Viserys reconsiders and doesn't marry the 12-year-old girl (so far, it's somewhat woke up) and instead chooses Allicent Hightower, his 15-year-old daughter's apparently teenage best friend (wow!). Allicent is not supposed to have such a distant relationship with Viserys, but, for once, a Targaryen takes the less incestuous of two options. However, the Targaryens usually know how to keep it in the family, even more so than royal families in the real world. What points out geneticist Razib Khan, “Daenerys Targaryen's inbreeding coefficient is 0.375. Carlos II, the last Spanish Habsburg, who was impotent, drooling, mentally handicapped and barely able to walk, had a coefficient of 0.254”. What is an inbreeding coefficient? Does marrying your cousin qualify as incest? And what, fundamentally, is the problem with incest? David Balding, honorary professor of genetics, evolution and the environment at University College London, can explain it to us. First of all: what qualifies as incest? Is Viserys safe? Cross that out: are any of the potentially incestuous Viseryses clean? "There is no real biological rule," says Balding. “In most societies I know of, the limit is on cousins, so some societies allow cousin marriages” (this category includes the UK) “and others do not. But I think 'incest' is usually reserved for first-degree relatives: brother, sister, father, daughter, that sort of thing." And why is it taboo? “You have a lot of flaws in your DNA,” explains Balding.
“Most of them don't matter too much, because you have two genomes, one from your mother and one from your father. And in most cases, as long as one of them is good, you're fine." But if your parents are related, that greatly increases your chances of having two copies of the same gene. In this way, the children of incest are more at risk of suffering from what are known as recessive diseases such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia, which require two copies of the same gene. “The risk of these diseases in the general population is quite low. Therefore, the risk is doubled”, what could be done by procreating with a cousin, “some societies consider it acceptable and others do not. But then if you get much closer, like uncle-niece and brother-sister, then the rates go up a lot more.” This is bad news for the Lannister twins and the Jon and Daenerys couple. Essentially, a high level of genetic diversity among parents supports the good health of their offspring. Balding describes how the body can compensate for a segment of poor-quality DNA, but not a pair; this is how inbreeding in plants and animals is associated with infertility. Of Charles II, the maligned Habsburg king, Balding says his inbreeding "definitely could have been a contributing factor" to his various anomalies. Portraits of the king, who fathered no heir and as such was the last of his line, show a protruding "Habsburg jaw." He may have had a combined pituitary hormone deficiency and distal renal tubular acidosis. Their family tree would make sense from top to bottom or vice versa. Her autopsy, according to the doctor who performed it, revealed (somewhat unlikely) a corpse that “did not contain a single drop of blood; her heart was the size of a peppercorn; her lungs corroded; his rotten and gangrenous intestines; he had a single testicle, black as coal, and the head of it was full of water.” Let it be a lesson to those who supported the union of Jon and Daenerys. For a king who marries his niece, says Balding, “the offspring will most likely be fine. But he will be at much greater risk than if he had married a commoner.” One doubts that many viewers will support Viserys in marrying a 12-year-old girl; this is yet another reason to hope that we will never see it happen. “They are relatively distant,” says Balding of Viserys and Laena. “I think they would still get some effects there, but not big ones. On the other hand, he says, sometimes royal families are related by different lines of descent. (This is true of European royalty; Prince Philip and the Queen, not uncharacteristically for their demographic, were third cousins.) "So the risk could be higher again." And the Targaryens as a family? Undoubtedly, the destructive madness is less an example of the dangers of intermarriage than an invention of the author. "Maybe it's a little bit of both," says Balding. “I think it makes sense. There is some sort of mental deficiency outcome associated with inbreeding, so in general that's plausible, but of course people are likely to exaggerate all of that." (More complex conditions like schizophrenia, he says, don't boil down to having two copies of the wrong gene; there's no easy answer to Targaryen madness and violence.) Matt Smith and Milly Alcock as Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen in 'House of the Dragon' (HBO) As unlikely as it may seem to see game of Thrones, humans are generally very unwilling, more so than other mammals, to have sex with their immediate relatives. "It's interesting how it evolved," says Balding. “It is not very well understood how this resistance occurs, but of course it does happen.” As for the coefficient, a brother-sister pair will have an inbreeding coefficient of 0.5 or 50 percent. Even in dogs, Balding says, "anything over 10 percent is considered kind of bad news." On the other hand, no human being is completely unrelated to another. "Eventually, if you go back far enough," Balding tells me, "you and I will have common ancestors."
Maybe House of the Dragon has even more inbreeding to offer us. Viewers have wondered if there were "vibes weird, like incest” between Prince Daemon, Viserys's brother, and Princess Rhaenyra, Viserys's daughter, when he puts a necklace on her in the first episode. The plot of the rest of the show's first season remains a top secret, but given the ending to all of this: crazy Daenerys Targaryen burning down King's Landing, we can assume the family continues to keep their procreation firmly at home. 'House of the Dragon' airs weekly on Sundays in the US, with the UK premiere coming at 2am the next morning on Sky. The episode will then repeat at 9pm on Mondays and will be available to stream on Sky and NOW after its initial broadcast. https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
