Although aaminin ko ang dami ko paring pagkukulang as a person and child of God (there are still times that I doubted Him kahit paulit ulit mo akong ineencourage), thank you kasi di ka nagsasawa sa kaka reach out sakin. Joyce, one of my best friends na parang kapatid ko na rin (dahil sa height sksksks) na alam na alam ang story ng buhay ko + my gala buddy. sobrang di ko inexpect na magiging ganito tayo kaclose. namimiss ko yung mga days na naggagala tayong dalawa tas di tayo maubusan ng kwento about sa mga buhay natin. ang cute lang kasi almost same din tayo ng situation before, at i appreciate na sabay tayong nagmomove forward. natutuwa ako kasi gumaganda ka lalo (sana ako din char haha, u'll see). love you girl!! more gala at kwento pa in the next years to comeeee 💞💞 3. And also with u, James and Vince, although di pa ako ganun ka open sa inyo, i really appreciate the company and all the fun that we had, natutuwa ako sa mga kalokohang natututunan ko sa inyo HAHAHAHAHA. Churchmates - from the pastors and pastora, sa mga leaders, sa mga naging teacher ko sa life group at SOL 1 & 2, hanggang sa mga kagaya ko ring disciples, thank you. kakaibang saya talaga naidudulot nyo sa buhay ko at sa family ko simula ng maging part ako ng church. para ko na rin kayong pamilya. alam kong pasaway ako at hindi perfect, at lately di na ako nakakasama sa mga gatherings, pero thankful ako kasi everytime na babalik ako, u guys still love and accept me the same. love u all with the love of the Lord 💖💖 14. I appreciate u for being brave, for choosing a more difficult road, for continuing learning and growing (not physically though but yeah), for striving to be a better version everyday, kahit na may mga times na mahirap at bumabalik parin sa anxious thoughts at kawalan ng disiplina (yan tayo eh tsk tsk tsk), but atleast u are trying. you did your best this year and this first sem in UP, wag ka na madisappoint sa sarili mo ha? makakabawi ka rin, umpisa palang ng lahat. laban lang ha? 'til that day comes na makikita mo sarili mo sa stage, nakasuot ng sablay, at makikita mo mga magulang mo at lahat ng mga taong nagmamahal sayo na proud na proud sayo. this may sound absurd but, i love you, self!! kayang kaya mo yan 💓💓💓 (draft palang wala pang pics hahaha)

"Renewed"

 I am a caterpillar, who have already grown its wings

But still stuck, overstaying in my cocoon

Afraid to be seen, afraid to fall

 Seeing other butterflies who were once a caterpillar like me

Keeps me motivated, but terrified at the same time

 My cocoon cracks, shake, breaks

Pushing me to go out and fly

Leaving me no choice but to spread my wings

My unexpectedly beautiful wings

 Only then I realize, how good it feels

To show the world the beauty I've hidden for so long

To let go of fear and fly high

 The butterfly is me, or it can be you, or anyone of us that may also have the same struggle as me. May you have anxiety, feel awkward to the world, wanted to do something that will change and have an impact on the world but filled with fear, this is for you. We can pass at this moment. Just take little steps, love yourself even more, and do not be afraid to show who you really are. No matter how small you may think of yourself, there is something stored in you that you still haven’t realized and discovered yet, and I know, someday, you’ll shine. Just keep dreaming, and don’t let anyone or anything, especially fear, to stop you from flying up high and inspire the world. Someday, you will.

A man is standing at the right side of the painting, an old man with black hair, wearing blue polo and greenish pants. At his back is a wall with red and white paints, with letters forming the word “Coca Cola”, a well-known brand of soft drinks. The old man has a tan, brown complexion.

The old man’s head is bent downwards, his eyes staring at the ground, his arms were hidden at his back, left arm freely swings vertically, and the left arm is bent, making a 90 degree at the elbow, supporting the other arm. The left hand that is freely swinging has its fist closed, with pout lips. His clothes were tangled, and the color was faded.

The extended tip of the first letter in the word Coca-cola, C, resembles an ax, pointing at the old man’s heart. Under it, the words “REG PHIL” is shown. The background, other than the printed words, was a combination of red and white paints. But the color of the red paint near the man’s heart was darker and more concentrated.

We are asked to think of a word, a word that represents an emotion, and to draw some random lines in a piece of paper feeling that emotion. I choose the word ‘Renewed’. I choose that word because that is the very feeling I felt as I enter UPLB. And this is what I’ve got.

           Unexpectedly, I’ve drawn a seemingly ‘G clef’ sign (maybe try to rotate your head, I mean, the pic counterclockwise to appreciate what I'm saying hehe). Hmm, is that mean I have potential in music? Lol just kidding. I am only a good singer in the shower, I don’t even have a loud voice and confidence. But who knows?

Ka.Li.Ka.Sa.N.

The upper portion is green, representing vines with some flowers growing in it. The lower portion is just plain brownish, representing a wilted, dry branch of vines. It represents what is taking place in our current environment. *plays the song Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran by Asin*

It is a reminder to help in conserving our environment. We only have one earth, might as well protect it and stop being part of the pollutant (opxx yung mga makakalat dyan, char).

This tableau shows the concept of nationalism. The tableau is composed of four parts, the first part is the early stage of Filipino community where there are still no colonizers, the people doing fine with daily household chores like planting grains, washing the clothes, preparing rice, transporting timber from trees, selling rice cakes in bilao. The second part is in chaos, where the colonizers started to invade and ruin the peace of the community. The third part is revolution time, where our fellow Filipinos learn to fight for freedom against the colonizers. And the last part, accompanied by the song “Ako ay Pilipino”, the Filipino community finally can stand, getting the freedom we deserve.

This is one of my favorite art in Arts 1 because I have created my personal reminder through this mask.

The mask is divided into two parts, as you can see it. A black side with an eye surrounded by white paint and a blue side with an eye surrounded with yellow paint. Both sides have flowers on the edge.

The two opposite sides represent day and night. The eye surrounded by white paint represents the moon, and the eye surround with yellow paint represents the sun. The flowers that are still growing on both sides can basically represent me, or you, all of us.

Why did I choose ‘perseverance’ as a virtue that represents this mask? Recall that flowers are present on both sides, right?  Simply because we, flowers, can still grow no matter what situation we are in. And while we are on the dark side of our lives, we are patiently waiting and hoping for the sun to come again, right? But still, while waiting, it will never stop us from growing. In fact, we grow more in this part, because we learn how to live without the sun.

Plants, especially flowers, can store starch (I'm sorry I wanted to include some bio stuff here since I'm a BS Biology student hehe). That starch is what I wanted to represent as hope. While amidst the darkness, in the very uncertain part of our lives, we can still use that hope to keep fighting.

And while we are in the dark, it may seem that no one appreciates our beauty or even our presence, but again, don’t let it hinder you to grow more, to learn more, and keep on moving forward. Don’t give up on your dreams, dear. You can do it. Ajaaa!! Fighting!!

“Summer Heat” by Lara Latosa

Burning within you

Veins filled with flowing gore

Stuck in the unending cycle

Of cleanse and transgress

Reigniting ablaze

Just to extinguish it again

 I interpreted the painting as water washing off a trace of blood, blood represented by sin. We, humans, admit it or not, are stuck in the cycle of washing off our sins through repenting through our God we believed in, but after some time committing sins again.

Literature is a form of art in written form such as poems, fiction and non-fiction books, epics, anecdotes, etc. It is one of the earliest, most common and easiest way to express since literatures are usually long lasting and may be passed on from generation to generation. Our country is known for having literary works even before the colonizers came in our country.

Representing art, specifically, literature, and we did it through a radio broadcast. Our group use the story of “Biag ni Lam-ang”, a well-known old folk literature in the Philippines. Have fun listening!

Art is meant to be observed and interpreted. Art is everywhere, and art is appealing to the senses. It is a form of expression. Catharsis, a release of emotion, can be felt by doing art or appreciating art. But art is not just created simply just to express, but also calls for a change, to change the situation an artist sees through observing in his environment. Art is usually different from what is common and usually desensitized us, opening our eyes to the things we don’t usually pay attention to. Art created with meaning buried deep with it, though anyone can interpret it in a whole different way, which can test someone’s perspective about life.

My Journey in Arts 1 Class

Well, to be honest, I admit that I am not good at arts. Any aspect of it, I guess. I always see someone that they were only good at arts if they are known, or they can draw well, paint well, sing well, dance well, yeah, basically I am referring to those who have talents. And I admit, again, that I wanted to be one of them. I badly want to be one of them. I always mock myself for not having enough talents to make art.

But as I go an enter this class, my perspective changed. Being an artist is not limited to someone’s innate skills or talent. Also, you don’t need to be “good in arts” just to appreciate it and create one. Art, in its pure form, is simply an avenue to express oneself. You can just grab a pen and a piece of paper and draw some random lines and that alone is an art. You can sing a random song and feel its lyrics, that’s an art. You can write a poem even without using some fancy words and you can still consider it as an art.

At the beginning of the class, all of us were asked “What is art?”, a question composed of three words, yet left us thinking deep, what is art, really? There are tons of possible answers to this question. There are also a lot of theories, concepts, and philosophers who try to define art. But overall, what remained in my mind, and in my heart, is that everyone is an artist on their own, art is everywhere, and each one of us can do art.

An existing art can be recreated and do another art from it. In painting, one can do a poem out of it, as if it is still part of the painting. Mask painting is also a fun way of making art. Imparting a virtue through a tableau is also a good way of making art. Recalling our very own “Baybayin” and making an art out of it is a very fulfilling way of doing art, for it shows nationalism and appreciates our ancestors. Art is beautiful, right? But it became more beautiful once we put our hearts upon making it. Make art part of our life. ART. Act. Recreate. Today.
