Just Two Girls Living Their College Life

Scene One 

Lu and Dea are sitting inside the library of the university they attend, books and papers scattered all over the table in front of them. Both girls have their eyes glued to laptop screens, barely saying anything to each other. After a few more minutes, Dea finally looks up at Lu, breaking the silence that had persisted between them for hours. 

Dea. Will you take the early train tomorrow?

Lu’s fingers pause above her keyboard, shifting her attention to Dea with a dazed expression. 

Lu. Uhhh… I’ll try to, it depends on if I finish all my work or not

Dea. If you’re here, then you will finish your work

Lu. I will take the 8:40 (p.m.) train if I have to

Dea . Okay

Both girls resume their work on their laptops, silence quickly filling their surroundings once again. The silence does not persist for long this time as Lu continuously takes quick glances at Dea with another dazed expression. 

Lu. Do you want to get Chipotle?

Scene Two 

Lu and Dea decide to take a break from their work, and now they begin walking to the nearest Chipotle a few blocks away. 

Lu. I need a monster 

Dea. Okay, we can get one after class but will it help you?

Lu. I need one

Dea. Today is the day you need a Monster?

Lu. When I’m normal and tired, Monster makes me hyper; when I’m depressed and tired, a monster makes me normal. Today is the day, 

Dea nods, quickly ushering Lu to cross the road before the light turns red. A large puddle sits in front of them, in the way of their path across the road. Dea tries her best to pull Lu by the arm to hurry across, but Lu barely walks any faster.

Dea. Let’s hurry and cross the street, watch out for the puddle

Lu. Why didn’t we just move the puddle?

Dea. Move the puddle?

Lu. Oh- no I meant move from the puddle

Dea. What? Can you walk on water now?

Lu. Yes I can

Scene Three

Lu approaches Dea sitting by herself at a table in a study area near their apartment. She sits down in front of her roommate, setting her things down on top of the table. Her eyes linger at the cup sitting in front of Dea. 

Lu. Did you ever drink the milk in the fridge like you said you would?

Dea. Yea, this is my cup right here

Lu. I still can’t believe you drink milk straight up, I thought those people didn’t exist

Dea raises her eyes from her notebook, staring at Lu for a while before responding.

Dea. What do you mean? There’s nothing wrong with drinking milk

Lu. You’re the weird one who drinks milk straight up, that’s what babies do

Dea. I’m not the only one, my friend does it too

Lu. What? I can’t believe that, I refuse to believe that these people exist

Dea sighs, lowering her head once again to continue her studying

Scene Four

The two girls are on their way back home after a long exam. Dea sips on a coffee Lu had bought for her moments before.

Dea. I ran into Fred in the elevator today

Lu. Oh Fred? He’s such a nice guy

Dea. I know right! Im surprised he even remembered my name

Lu. Of course he would!

Dea. You’re right, he’s such a friendly guy

Lu. Maybe too friendly, I’ve seen him with people I know on BeReal

Dea. What?

Lu. He posted a picture of himself with my friend I know from my dad’s work like, our dads work with each other, and I saw him with a girl from my church but like a subunit part of my church. I’m like how does he know these people?

Dea. That’s crazy! What a small world

Before Lu could continue with her tangent, Fred suddenly appears in front of them, heading the opposite direction. He takes off an earbud with a bright smile, greeting the girls.

Fred. Did you guys just come out of taking the exam?

Dea. We finished a while ago

Fred. How was it?

Lu. It was okay. I’m not depressed this time after finishing it

Fred. Well that’s good

Fred nods as a goodbye, throwing his skateboard on the floor and putting his earbud back in before leaving. Dea and Lu glance at each other before erupting into laughter.
