based on the reading about 9/11 and its surveillance, how did the 9/11 event affect overall surveillance and how it is used? - After 9/11 surveillance expanded such as how it was used and just having more tools available and allowing the government to do this. many new and advanced tools either grew and were more powerful than before but after 9/11 the tools that were already in tact and being used just became more normalized as another form of surveillance to the world. Throughout 9/11 certain surveillance was used to target certain groups or what they referred to as terrorists but after it became something that targeting people who had bad behavior or activists and aimed at other protestors. Allowing the government to change how surveillance was used and to be used against anyone.
in the patriot act, what were some positive and negative impacts from this act regarding surveillance tools? - some positive impacts from the USA patriot act, are how it is good for the government and other officials to provide and give information which this helped in regards to threats or crimes going around with the use of surveillance. As well as the positive outcome of getting fast and more efficient foortage or information when needed, and prevent anything from happening. Now the bad or negative impacts would be people not getting privacy, such as everything you do sent, post can be used. About all of your data can be downloaded or used and monitored while others see that as a privacy concern. This can cause less interaction as people know they are being monitored and can cause a silence.
how can someone protect their account or not put themselves at risk with getting in trouble ? - different ways one can protect their account or also their privacy can be to first watch what they post and making sure it is appropriate or accurate if it has any information about a movement and not spread any misinformation. Also being cautious with what they post because if its anything bad it can. be used against them but most importantly watching for whats being posted out there. Not engaging or interacting if you believe it can cause more trouble or show bad behavior either to you or others. Even if you use certain tools on social media such as being private or hiding people from your story, what you post will still be seen as it can be viewed from a browser, or downloaded from your data, as well as others may screenshot it and share it with others.
can what people post be misunderstood but still get them in trouble? - yess there can be many ways of how people can post on social media but still others can view it or share it to others and they can see the post but see it as something else. One example of this would be how the post on the media can be interpreted by others whether thats within making a job or sarcasm that other factors can cause concerns even if the person who posted did not mean it. the actions one shows or does on social media can impact and can even be taken into legal action and get them in trouble whether it is their intention or not. misinformation or others viewing posts on media can cause misunderstanding if the wrong audience or person is targeted and although what they share may not include any criminal activity, it can still involved words or show as harmless.

from the documentary what is pegasus and how was it shown being used? - pegasus is type of use where one cant enter and get someones data through their phone and it was something countries were buying as it was developed by the NSO group. Pegasus can be installed into anyones phone if targets and it gave access to almost all data on the phone. throughout the documentary we saw pegasus being used by governments as it was shown they were using it as well as on journalists as we saw. it target these people as well as their families or those close to them. this shows that pegasus is very strong and showed that it was easy for them to get into their phones and invade their privacy.
from the virtual spaces mentioned in the reading, based off the virtual spaces what are some limitations that apply? - these vlogs that are out there on the internet are spaces for creators and just overall in general to feel a space where they can feel connected with others and as mentioned, "a virtual homeplace" for other bloggers. From these virtual spaces and bloggers online, it is mostly for those who are able to access it through internet and it can be a con as those who may not have access to internet will not have access to these safespaces that others do and they can't engage or gain from it. "Nevertheless, I do recognize the limitations of virtual homeplaces, such as the limitation of scope or range. In other words, these blog spaces become a space for only those with internet access, for those who are technologically savvy and have economic/financial leverage." Meaning not all can have an impact and benefit from this making it a limitation to many and only is able to target certain people.
what is the impact of ethnic online communities - Online ethnic communities are forms for many others to find connections within others in their ethnic group or just overall community. although there are some challenges and concerns to these ethnic communities online, such as mentioned earlier not everyone will have the same access to the internet and to these communities as other people which can have an affect and they may not feel as connected. "Web communities have to unite behind a common cause” (Girard 1999)" Explaining that these communities are more than just online groups that are formed. They are groups that use online spaces to create a change online and for activism or for certain movements to speak out for these communities that can be overlooked or misled.
what is gamergate? - gamergate is a movement which its goal and primary focus was on ethics in this video game. although it had a turn by being misunderstood and soon known as for a video game that was targeting women who would play video games, focusing on zoe Quinn. causing this to escalate and to receive threats, harassment, bullying and trolling. this was a game for all to play but it took a turn and targeted women as their group were entering and beginning to play video games and began targeting them. although it was targeting women, it also had false acusations of zoe and as certain chats had showed when zoe was being targeted.

black twitter a form of media for people of color to speak and use their voices and platforms but how does it differ from mainstream media and other platforms and how it is used? - as lee mentions, that black twitter is to advocate for people of color and use the platforms to challenge dominate narratives while seeing the differences they face because they are people of color where as on mainstream platforms there can be racial bias or oppression but the main platforms and black twitter is a place where they can feel more comfortable while also have no problems. "indeed, this forum allows for textual poaching as resistance, where the user produces content that challenges dominant (oppressive) cultural ideologies and norms, including racial bias" Stating how the platform of black twitter is more supportive to people of color where as the mainstream media can have issues and concerns like racial bias and stereotyping groups or people. while on black twitter they can make hashtags and have organized media.
what is a way to make all social media platforms and movement more organized? - one way for social media platforms and other tools online to stay organized the biggest one is hashtags this is a way to organize and also to find other hashtags since all posts with the same will be together. One hashtag as an example I remember was the black lives matter hashtag and any posts related to that movement were under that hashtag and were easy to find. Another way to stay organized through social media is have a way or ways to engage and know what audience you will engage. Another way can be through privacy and ensure others privacy is protected.
according to Fuchs why is it important to consider the limitations on platforms and social media. - Fuchs mentions how many platforms are a great way for others to get connected but it wouldn't be a platform as they would call it without any guidelines and limitations which is really is what makes the platform. During certain movements or where people and groups are advocating for something and use their voice through social media, can be good but also not as useful especially when using it for a movement. It can be seen that platforms don't create the movements most of the time but its a tool to keep them going or existing issues to continue growing through the media by others. When it comes to certain apps and social media there are many guidelines and restricted tools which can affect also those using platforms for this reason. 4. referring to the #nodapl movement, how has social media helped indigenous people share their stories and culture through social media, and how has it changed in any ways whether it has been positive or negative? - social media has impacted this movement as well as the indigenous people as it helped them grow awareness to the community. Many either did not know about the movement or were mis informed, for many reason people did not know and with social media it helped others to see and understand the movement. this gave the people a way for others to get to know more about them and to hear about the movement and just overall be heard rather than ignored. social medias helped them positively in a way for them to have their stories heard and the struggles they face.some negatives from this with social media would be the concerns of bias and misinformation about the movement. Overall is (spier's) radicalization good or bad? - The reading of spiers, discussing the radicalization of the civic engagement. Overall i feel it has a good/positive sense in which the way he discusses the way he has been involved and the activism such as through these discussions online and through networks and just overall how he uses the Internet. He mentioned the way he uses the internet such as "to become informed, to communicate, and to organize for activities that he then participated in physically seems to be emerging as a formula for civic engagement among a broad range of Americans" (Spier) By explaining how his involvement and the different ways he engage in a positive outcome and sense which shows what he wants to promote through the Internet and using the media for the efforts of awakening social justice issues by preparing for political engagement.
2. what is social capital and how is it used? - social capital is a connection between the networks and relationships that people come up with that are productive and to help or influence in a good way. Social capital was mentioned in the reading based on how with the help of technology it is capable of building relationships through different ways to relate it to civic engagements and involving political participation. A way it can be used through media is by people using their platforms and creating bonds with others to expand their goals or values and just be able to communicate and discusses issues or concerns.
3. how do white supremacist movements grow through technology/social media - white supremacist movements use different ways in which they continue to grow by the ideas and tools they use such as creating groups online or recruiting people to be able of their movement and getting the word out and getting the movement to be big. As well as growing online through other or similar community groups and by all of this they can gather ideas, context, all these kinds of ideologies and reach for a goal for a larger crowd whether its targeting influencers with a high platform. Mentioned in the reading, "the internet enables social movements to cross national boundaries in ways simply not possible in any previous era" (39) Stating that these ideas of movements are being spread across groups based on the influence and impact it has and engaging more people making movements bigger.
4. With the movements of white supremacist online, what are some global issues or the negatives of it? - some concerns of overall negative issues because of the white supremacist movements would be shown an increase of hate and critizing certain groups and can lead to bigger concerns such as attacks based on what is seen just online. another concern is radicalization because of wha tis seen from the movements and anything that is misinformed can lead to bigger problems affecting others. " the emergence of white supremacy online allows for the possibility of knowledge communities where those who oppose racial equality can gather and affirm for each other their shared ideas about white superiority." (55) Stating how these movements can cause hate and make racism harder to put a stop on. references: the radicalization of zeke speir (L. Elain) daniels white supremacist

are there any algorithms that are commonly seen or used as how white supremacy is seen on social media or in real life? - Some algorithms that I have seen that are common are just any search in general meaning it seems as if you look something up it can be biased at first seen there is no algorithm to begin with. The biggest algorithm i see on the daily can be through the use of social media platforms and how they use whats known as "rage bait" and getting peoples attention. and even leading to an interaction. Not just is this seen through the media but also in daily situations such as people demanding others and the behavior they show as this can be because of how they feel superior to others and are entitled.
with the use of technology how do these simulations use a female voice to give a representation as "kind/friendly", what techniques are used? - there can be many ways that those who created these softwares of simulations that they use to making the female voice to be friendly. As stated on page 248, "The gendering of the interface mentioned earlier points to a con capitalization of digital hardware as actively friendly, nonthreatening, de-sirable, and malleable." They gender the voice to be designed and heard of as a female, while wanting to make it seem easier for anyone to talk with while also having a specific voice to match what a females voice would be. By using a female voice, it can allow humans to feel comfortable with it and it shows that because the voice is based off a gender, it shows how gender is classified since people see women to be helpful, and kind which is why it is likely to use a female voice rather than a male voice. in todays society we have like alexa and siri and now noticing the "default settings" are a female voice unless you go and change the voice on your own but this represents how it is more of a social norm now and days and how it has become a pattern.
how does white supremacy play a role online? - White supremacy can be presented through online in different ways such as through social media platforms, articles and many more. Although it can be seen differently for females and men as it can be expressed through what is posted. Some ways it is seen through online can be through what I believe is a big role is society, social media and the way people or influencers use their platforms, in ways such as telling others to join something they are apart of or attracting a specific audience and since they have a big platform people can be convinced. Or even spreading misinformation about something and making it seem although it is the truth for people on the media to see and having "marginalized groups" by targeting other people through the internet. There are important key points to look at when it comes to white supremacy such as how certain apps or media is using it to gain from it.
in the reading, "gender, technology, and visual cyberculture" how how the author focus on how technology and the media is connected with human computer interface? - The author explains how there is a connection with how the media is used and technology as well as how the interaction of humans use it. The author mentioned how "products are represented as a development in the human - computer interface where the interface is so friendly that communication technologies are humanized". Stating how this product used that is ananova was created for specific uses like this one and being involved and used with human interaction. Certain producers have ways and techniques on how they use the media in easy ways for humans to use it with no concerns or confusion, by making it easy and simple and accessing tools, while also having a purpose in the gender and by connecting it with women through a gender visual.

how does a merit or meritocracy system change how technology is used and how its affecting others and their mental health? - as seen in the movie and in class discussion the episode Nose dive from black mirrors shows us a society that is based on a rating system where it is affecting others how they view things and go on about their days trying to reach the top of the top, seeing it as a social hierarchy system based on your statues and social approval. Living in this kind of system can affect people and society as a whole as it is something they are relying on for anything and everything that without it they are not the same. 2. In a society where it can be viewed as a merit system, what are examples of ways in real life, people can opt out from this to not go based on this kind of system whether its on social media or overall in general daily life. - some ways that people in a society like this can opt out from this system can be hard and in some cases you really "cant" but in other ways like through social media you can such as hiding the like count on instagram and other similar tools that apps have, as well as not "romanticizing" and focusing on just this but to focus on other habits that either don't relate to social media or don't involve it. Not focusing on what is being depended or seen through "a ranking" for example like uber and being ranked although they rely on this to be able to earn stars and ranking for the future its important to focus on the person and their experience rather through ranking other people judge them or determine them to be. 3. Based on the reading, "race after technology" can technology be biased and if so in what ways based on the reading. - from the part 2 of the reading, Benjamin mentions the dimensions proposed for the new jim code which are, "engineered inequity, default discrimination, coded exposure, and technological benevolence"(Benjamin 86) As with this quote benjamin is referring to the bias bots and how it is reinforcing race biases in ways throughout technology. As mentioned that its not just a key based on the algorithm in technology but it focuses on other ideas such as the status of someones class and as well as their gender, rather than it just only be race. As stated technology isn't neutral as it goes deep into the concern of race bias and focusing on the "bots" and having "racial bots" that are framed in popular discourse and although the bots are embedded in technology it still shows forms of racism. 4. regarding the merit system of a society what are some positives and negatives of having a system like this. - some ways that can contribute to the positives can be such as having this system to make a society for people to have manners, be respectful and not having any negativity relating to how positive behavior regardless of where you are. Although in the real world it is not like the episode where it is based off ratings but in the real world having this behavior can give you a good presentation of yourself and a view, as well as be given opportunities for your rewards and overall contributing. As for the negatives of this system it can cause issues relating mental health as you are having to reach this certain standard and expectation that are all around you and it can get to your head wondering if you are meeting that expectations and comparing yourself to the higher people as you want to reach to where they are. As well as it being unfair, peoples lives are all different and whether its one little mistake it can bring you down and your status and how others view you, which then compare yourself to someone of a higher class than you and realizing the lower person is not given the same or equal opportunities, or even being treated as fairly which can tie to discrimination and race. references: netflix; black mirror season 3 epsiside 1: (nosedive) Benjamin, Ruha. 1. how is identity represented through cyberspace and how it may be used? - identity can be represented through cyberspace in different ways such as through profiles, identity names on how people view theirselves, as well as avatars or profile names and pictures. There can be many ways people can use their technology as a form to connect with others although they are behind a screen it can be seen as a comfortable use of social media, and technology for them away from the real world. Cyberspace can be used as a way of people to express themselves and how they present themselves to others in the community. It can be used in different ways such as how they use it and an environment for them to be "invisible online" as mentioned on page 1 on "race in cyberspace." Refering to the reading "This Yellowfaced Cyborg Terminator, amalgam of middle-class white man and digital ninja, revels in the material hybridity between human and machine, using this positionally to reinscribe master narratives based on racism and colonialism" Mentioning how there can be different ways people use their identity and connect it with cyberspace for others to view. As mentioned how hybridity between human and machine to reinscribe master narratives based on racism and colonism by referring to specific transformations on how cyberspace can be like through different perspectives and how characters can have meanings to reinforce specific concerns on social media in relation to their iendity. 2. in the reading "race is cyberspace", how does the author touch base on how identity fluidity and racial bias connect? - the author touches base on how identity fluidity connects to racial bias as through cyberspace it allows people to express their identity and who they are although they can see it as a way to escape from reality. Although their identity fluidity is something they go through and live with apart from the technology and implications of it. with the use of cyberspace people are able to help them although certain issues don't connect and this is because based on their experiences it cant depend based on their structure and overall will be a issue some go through. "that Invisibility doesn't carry back over into "the real world" in ways that allow people to log in and simply shrug off a lifetime of experiencing the world from specific identity-related perspectives. You maybe able to go online and not have anyone know your race or gender" (Kolko 4) As this quote from the reading highlights how race is an issue and it doesn't go away like anything on social media as it is there and social structures are an issue that impact these interactions online on the media. This allows these people to feel safe with others not knowing their real them such as their real identity and race so they wont be bias towards them.
3. Are there any social issues that connect with cyberspace? - with the use of cyberspace there are social issues that connect with it such as the concern of privacy and how we know if our data is being encrypted or being used or sold. as far as the concern of privacy other issues with cyberspace would be racial bias and how certain stereotypes can be affected through the use of it and if everyone is given the same opportunity with either the same or similar use of technology through cyberspace and how it is different as far as for others of different stereotypes. 4. how does cyberspace impact the lives and what will the effect be for future technology and generations? - cyberspace is changing more and more everyday although its also what we use everyday and even shapes how we either view it or use it whether for the purpose of it to make connections or for other reasonings. It is a connection many people of all ages are able to use and reflect on although in the future with many new tools and high technology changing it can lead to the new generations having to adapt to these changes and even go through more policies such as data protection, the cookies, the surveillance and many more tools that come with a phone as all this will be used to ensure the privacy of others.

What is the overall use and the concept of “the new jim code”? - The new Jim code as R. Benjamin mentions how the use of technology now connects and has an effect on racial bias. The new Jim code examines how certain tools can reflect on objectives that relate to social inequities. “The animating force of the new jim code is that tech designers encode judgements into technical systems but claim that the racist results of their designs are entirely exterior to the encoding process. Racism thus becomes doubled..” (Benjamin 32) Benjamin mentions that technology is always going to have effects when it comes to racial and many rely on social media and may not see the bad but to realize how technology has evolved and realize tools such as facial recognition and even algorithms and challenge these social issues and impact racial problems.
2. In the reading, by Everett , “The revolution will be digitized”, how is the digital divide highlighted and what does it impact? - In the reading around page 127 Everett discusses “how wide is the digital divide”, mentioned how digital divide goes way back for example since the early 1990’s. Mentioning how digital divide focuses on racial and social inequality factors that target certain communities which impacts them. The digital divide is where there is limited or an unfair amount of access to technology and it can be compared to how many may have all the access to technology whereas others dont so they can view and have the perspective of tech differently. Everett discusses, “No wonder the rhetoric of “the digital divide” functions to obfuscate a parallel “digital delirium” reality as descriptive of blacks’ relationship to the digital revolution.” (Everett 136) stating that some are too focused on technology and the digital divide itself but not focusing on the serious harmful effects of technology and the use of it and how it can impact people's safety and identity, and racial inequality issues within the technology system. 3. should "digital revolution" be a concern or have an impact for everyone? - Digital revolution can have an impact on everyone although not everyone may be impacted by it the same as others. Certain factors such as safety and surveillance issues can be a big concern as well regarding digital divide. Others may have more access to technology and have more opportunities compared to others who don't have access or are not up to date with it. Digital revolution can play a role in everyday lives and impact through the way we use it. Digital divide has many risks which we put in our daily lives, and it reflects on inequalities. Although we may have access to our technology we don't have full control over what we do. So yes it's a worldwide concern but can be more of a concern for certain populations and communities and how we protect ourselves and plan to improve through technology. 4. Why can some algorithms be risky and harmful to society? - Referring to algorithms of oppression by S. Noble. Noble highlights how certain engine searches can make a difference on our technology and how we view things online all by a search. Search engines overall can be harmful and risky as it is going based off what may already be on the internet and biases. As well as it can highlight discrimination issues and concerns and it is there for people to see which isn't the best perception for people. As many algorithms can also lead to these issues such as spreading information that is not true or not accurate. "the near-ubiquitous use of algorithmically driven software, both visible and invisible to every-day people, demands a closer inspection of what values are prioritized in such animated decision making" (noble 1) Discussing the concerns of decision making and how algorithms can be for anything not just engine searches.

BLOG POST #2
What can be some risks in technology when using facial recognition and how does it connect to surveillance? - In the video “Race and Technology” by Nicole Brown she mentioned the importance of facial recognition when using technology. Facial recognition is something now that is normal and its as if most apps ask you to use it when either opening it or wanting to unlock something on your phone. Almost seen as the new “norm” and even save you time from putting in your password. Nicole Brown mentioned that it's not just facial recognition but it's also connected to algorithms and surveillance as there are harmful impacts of the roles for racial justice. Some other risks can be such as violations through facial recognition along with privacy surveillance meaning that although it may be on your phone you're being “monitored” and this can lead to tracking. Connecting all to these risks as well as being “tracked” which is why it seems as if everything we talk about somehow ends up on our feed or as an ad, which is strange.
2. In the reading of Daniel’s rethinking Cyberfeminism, how does he focus on sort of critical ethical connections of technology to connect and reflect on gender variation. - In the reading, Daniel emphasizes how technology plays a big role on gender and ties it to technology. As technology can be a form of connection for some people, it can also not always be a safe place for nearly everyone as some may not feel as connected to it as others. Daniel highlights, “For still others, the Internet offers a “safe space” and a way to not just survive, but also resist repressive sex/gender regimes”(Daniel, p.118). Referring to how these critical ethics play a role in technology. This can seem that although in the end social media isn't always as it seems and can be a “safe” space for everyone, those who may struggle with gender oppressions may repel against any gender regimes as there can be challenges they come across on social media. Some may use technology as a form of empowerment and go to social media to express who they are and rely on it for any support.
3. how does Eubanks highlight the use of technology and social inequality and tie it to social class? - In the reading “automating inequality” Eubanks analyzes how systems have a connection to inequality when referring to class and race. “Automated decision making shatters the social safety net, criminalizes the poor, intensifies discrimination, and compares our deepest national values. It reframes shared social decisions about who we are and who we want to be as systems engineering problems” (Eubanks, p. 27). Stating that automated decision making socially divies people up and giving them this sort of “name” to certain races and classes, along with reflecting on how some decisions are reflected on how people live and make these people and communities feel like they are being violated or going against. Not only is this framing race and class groups but it gives humankind a certain approach to these kinds of people. For example as in connection to a worldwide issue referring to the protest for immigrants as this is also referring to inequality. This ties to the question and quote as it is focusing on certain race groups and based on their class and profiling them into people who they may be such as an example highlighting certain stereotypes. Showing how decision making and technology can justify something that it is not and ignore the real human social issue. 4. In the reading, "Rethinking Cyberfeminsim" how does Daniel express and navigate through dialectical reasoning thorough gender and technology. - Both gender and technology reflect upon one another as they connect in a way for women to feel a connection and feel as they can be themselves through technology in ways which they can be influenced. Giving them something as a source to feel connected as Daniel highlights, “..the lived experience and actual Internet practices of girls and self-identified women reveals ways that they use the Internet to transform their material, corporeal lives in a number of complex ways that both resist and reinforce hierarchies of gender and race” (Daniel, p.101) As stated, not only does the reading focus of cyberfeminism and tech but as well as race but as well as social order and where these women may see themselves through their experiences. Technology on how women use it can be in many different ways such as finding a positive outcome and using it as a empowerful way rather than the lack of it. Not only does technology highlight gender and the positives for women but can also reflect on how technology can be used as a form to keep up with race and gender and the social norms.

BLOG POST- storytime
My senior year of high school, my friend group and I were all decided to go to the beach one the weekend, our friend group was very spontaneous about going places and random last minute trips were normal to us. We decided to spend a day trip and drive out to Laguna, which from us was about 2 hours and some minutes. Since it was a far drive we planned accordingly the day before and even made an itinerary of what were doing and where we were going. Half of us were sleeping on the way but i was passsanger giving my friend driving directions, my gps maps kept glitching and either wouldn’t load or it would be rerouting me and saying to exit on random streets just to get back on the same freeway. It then told us we were 10 minutes away, but when we “arrived” me and friend look at each other and just laugh because next thing you know we ended up on a hill in the middle of no where near a hiking trail with just an ocean view, which was no where on our agenda but it was a nice view. So we all just got off decided to “reconnect with nature” and enjoyed the moment after my phone took us the wrong place, and now where we were at, out of 5 phones none of us had service! Not only did this happen once but throughout the day my gps kept rerouting me or giving me complelty wrong directions and ended up somewhere completely opposite. But now as I am writing this story, in the moment it was a core memory because it was me and all my close friends enjoying our time together before we all went to college, and the last thing on our mind was how we were gonna go to the destination but after hours we eventually got there but almost half the day was gone already. On the way back home everyone and I mean all 5 of us had our maps on making sure we were going the right way. I learned that although we live with technology in our lives and our hands daily it is something we can’t always rely on, because it can go against us and to not just always focus on technology but also to lookout for signs that could help.
