Deltarune spoilers under cut

Gerson looking through the shadow crystal: Well I'll be...

Mantle: Yes I'm afraid it's true everything you see is nothing but a lie~

Gerson: Hm....*tosses crystal behind him* Anyways where was I?

Mantle: Weh?...Do you not get it? Nothing here is real! Noone here is real! NOT EVEN YOU ARE REAL!

Gerson: Is that so?

Mantle:...Why yes indeed, not even the one I'm speaking to right now truly exists. Once that fountain is sealed you will be but a pile of dust locked away in your son's office, and there's nothing you can do about it~

Gerson: I see...well there is one thing I can do about it

Mantle: And that is~?

Gerson: I gotta go write me a letter!

Mantle: Whu-

Gerson walking away: Now where'd I put that darn pen?

Mantle: HOW ARE YOU TAKING THIS SO WELL?!

There's alotta ways to interpret that opening sequence in Deltarune chapter 1, but personally, I think it shows how both the soul (us) and Kris are robbed of their entity and freedom entirely

Let's start with the obvious, Kris: Poor lil transgender child is puppeted by an unworldly force for seemingly no reason. Kris is not us, and we are not Kris, but we both have to live with the other's decisions. All of this we already know (except people with the media literacy of a chipped rock)

Now let's move on to the soul: In the beginning, we get to make a vessel, we have alot of control over what it looks like. It's hair, its clothes, even a little bit of its tastes and personality. Truly, it was our gateway, our own personalized touch into Deltarune's world. And then it's ripped away from us.

So then, we're thrusted unwillingly into controlling an entirely different person. One with their own history, their own mind, their own life. It's a situation neither the soul nor Kris wanted, their goals conflict (your own personal goals vs. whatever the fuck Kris is up to with carol) but they have to live with the other's decisions, no matter what.

The soul and Kris are at mercy with eachother. One could completely fuck over the other and chapter 4 on both a normal and weird route showcase this perfectly

I hope in future chapters we get to have our own vessel come back, and give us something other than our unwilling participant to control and explore the world with.
