it turns out a lot of people are actually on the same page about whether or not they'd work if they didn't have to earn money, we just all seem to have wildly different definitions of what counts as work. i'll see one person say "of course i would, i'd still want to create art and volunteer in my local community" and another say "hell no i wouldn't, i'd quit work and just create art and volunteer in my local community" and then they look at eachother like they said something incomprehensible.

autistic alhaitham who has a routine of making to-do lists every morning and planning out his day to the minute

autistic alhaitham who stims by fidgeting with his books, parts of his clothing, and often his keys (he likes kaveh's keys more because they've got a bunch of different charms attached)

autistic alhaitham that tends to eat the same things every day, unless he's pre-planned time with his friends, he gets overwhelmed by choice and it's comfortable this way

autistic alhaitham who stays up all night when he finds a new topic he's become obsessed with, kaveh finds him in the morning in the living room surrounded with piles of books and reports, alhaitham has a love-hate relationship with this part of himself, he loves learning and reading but when he gets too engrossed in things it puts his routines out of sync

autistic alhaitham who has no idea when he's info-dumping, especially because everyone around him just sees him as a genius sage so they feel honored to listen, smart people just talk about smart stuff, right? It's only those close to him who realise that his choice of conversation topic is also what he's spent the last week reading about non-stop, and are comfortable intervening when he needs to stop

autistic alhaitham who takes a lot of responsibility for his own differences or struggles - he never asks for accommodations or support, even if he could, instead he'll ask a mountain of questions to make sure he understands correctly, or write instructions and check them with someone so he knows he's taking the right steps

autistic alhaitham who stands up for himself and his needs whenever he gets overwhelmed or overstimulated - if he's struggling when why should he stay in this overcrowded loud room? He'll let someone know he's going, and then he'd off home or to the library to calm himself, everyone knows by now what it means when his happens and they never get mad, even if it seems abrupt

autistic alhaitham who, sometimes, feels too little stimulation, which makes him uncomfortable, so he gets kaveh to squeeze up and down his arms and hands or uses his weighted blanket for support

autistic alhaitham who, despite having a group of friends who are also neurodivergent (kaveh, cyno and tighnari), sometimes questions himself and his experiences - sometimes he feels like his friends seem more settled than him, less affected than him, or can cope better - he's learned to ask questions to them to understand their struggles, not only can he help his friends better now, but he also knows he's not alone

while i am autism posting i ALSO think a lot about baby teen undiagnosed aizawa. and mic, diagnosed since age 7 and trying to be helpful to his friend, showing aizawa an autism questionnaire like hey.....something to think about......perhaps.....

and aizawa is like this says difficulties with eye contact. I don't have that. and mic is like hm,,, but you do kind of....stare at people. an amount that some might say is......atypical

aizawa like yeah bc looking at people is a logical way to gain information about them and their potential threat level. if other people are limiting that resource because of social conventions then that's their problem not mine

and mic is like sure!! yeah!!! hypothetically though. SOME people might say these are some pretty autistic thought patterns

and aizawa shrugs and spends another 20 minutes logically dismantling the premise and phrasing of the questions and then goes to take a nap under his desk

my partner might be onto something when she says you can disguise your pickiness and food sensitivity as an adult by calling yourself a “purist.” so instead of saying “the taste and texture of cooked raisins make me want to hmork,” you say “i’m actually kind of a cinnamon roll purist, i prefer just a classic cinnamon filling and a really good dough instead of something with a ton of random mix ins,” which takes you from who gave this four year old a bachelor degree to oh wow this guy is a pretentious asshole about more things than i even thought was possible

i wait every year for summer, and it is usually good, but it is never as good as that summer i am always waiting for

when you go to school for animation you will find that every third person in your classes will say “I want to be a character designer/storyboard artist!” and there’s no problem with that! except that the vast majority of these people don’t realize they don’t actually want to be character designers or storyboard artists. What they WANT to do is draw pretty ocs and dnd characters over and over and not do anything like draw backgrounds or tell stories or make animate-able designs to meet the needs of the production they’re on. And this is fine too! I’m not even saying this to be shady. I’m saying this because so many people don’t even realize how many jobs there are out there that are adjacent to the animation/illustration industries that would be way more fulfilling for people that just want to draw pretty ocs over and over than character design/storyboarding. Sometimes the answer is being involved in a non-art animation role (like production management) and then drawing your friends’ dnd characters on the weekends.

Frankly, my recommendation is just to make short films, and if if’s too overwhelming or you can’t even get enjoyment out of doing character design/storyboarding (or whatever part of the pipeline you’re interested in) on a personal project like that, then you were probably never going to be fulfilled doing it as a job
