if you are one of the two people who downloaded this like five minutes after I posted about it, please re-download it! There was an issue in one of the merged events where the new official update changed the same part of one file as the mod and it will cause you to see a repeated dialogue whenever you sleep. whoops! I fixed it right away and at the time it said no one had downloaded the wrong version, but now a few hours later it says 2 people did and I am very embarrassed about not catching it before making the post. sorry!
LyleMod 0.1.2
Just a quick post to say I finally got around to updating the recruitable Lyle mod for Look Outside 1.03. No new content or anything, this just makes it work with the current version of the game.
I have a lot going on in my personal life atm and don't currently have the time or mental bandwidth to work on it much at all, but I wanted to get the mod playable again in its current state at least!

LyleMod 0.1.1
Made some changes and fixes based on feedback I've gotten here and elsewhere to my mod that adds recruitable Lyle!
I don't plan on making a new post for every little update, but this one fixed some problems that could come up if doing a playthrough with him so I wanted to share (in particular, in one specific fight...) and also I discovered that you DO need to use a new save for everything to work correctly. Really sorry about that! I'm still learning how RPG Maker works and I missed some issues.
Changes under the break:
Lowered Lyle's starting HP.
Increased Lyle's stamina slightly.
Increased Lyle's Attack slightly.
Changed Lyle's starting level from 2 to 4 (and adjusted when he learns his skills accordingly)
Made Snapshot and Develop Unrecordable (if you know you know)
Fixed the ammo system for the camera (so you can see how much film is loaded, can reload the camera, and can't use Snapshot when the camera is empty)
Develop is unusable until you've used Snapshot.
Increased the damage of Development Fluid.
Increased the damage of Multikick.
Lowered Multikick's stun chance.

LyleMod is out!
I finally managed to find enough free time to get the playtest version of my mod to recruit Lyle done. And now YOU can download it!
This release is JUST gameplay, you can recruit Lyle and he will move to your apartment and be an available party member. He has his own unique equipment and skills and everything, but has very little new dialogue currently written/implemented.
I'm releasing this now to hopefully get some feedback on how he plays. If you are just looking for new Lyle interactions, those will come later and it might be better to wait! But I would really appreciate any feedback on his gameplay!! Even if it is just to tell me I did a bad job!
This mod is for Look Outside v1.02 ONLY, if a patch releases please wait for me to update the mod before trying to use it. The mod overwrites game files and will likely break things if applied to a different game version.
I'd like to specifically thank @contract-crawdad, their post about playable Lyle is what inspired me to actually attempt this (I knew basically nothing about RPG Maker before this little project)
The mod comes with a text file that goes over his skills in more detail, if you are interested. Although ideally I'd like to see if he feels alright WITHOUT knowing the exact numbers and effects of everything, as if he was in the game from the beginning!

Thanks for the responses to my last post everyone! I decided to have Lyle learn his skills through level-up like the other characters, and instead set up the groundwork for some extra interactions with him in other ways.
With that, I was able to do a playthrough with him and everything seems good! didn't run into any bugs or anything. The playtest showed that I uh, made him a bit too strong though. not overwhelmingly so, but considering he will be a guaranteed character that can be recruited fairly early if you rush the photo, I don't want him overshadowing the other characters or stepping on their toes in playstyle.
currently the way he plays is that he has high hp and agility, middling defenses, relatively low attack and stamina, and can only use one handed melee weapons (his ranged slot is locked to his camera). But his skills all can debuff or inflict status on enemies! He plays like a tankier and more damaging alternative to Sophie that isn't quite as flexible.
I'm going to make a few adjustments to his skills (mostly so he doesn't make Sophie superfluous, his debuffs/ailments land too frequently atm), then if anyone is interested I'd like to share a v0.1 of the mod so I could get some feedback on how he plays. This initial release won't have any new dialogue or interactions beyond a small handful, this is JUST to make sure the gameplay side of things is okay. I hope to have that out within the next day or two.
Make sure, as always when modding, you back up your game files. If you have already had him develop the photo you can recruit him right away (which might be changed in future releases, but it felt fine for now to make sure I don't break the main quest line!)

I have most of the work done on the recruitable Lyle mod to make it playable! it is all fixed for the new update and everything, and I have all his skills figured out. But I'm stuck trying to decide between two ways to take him.
Direction 1: Since I based his skills on what he can do in the fight against him, a lot of them only really make sense if he is comfortable being seen as having been Changed (Lyle baby I know you are trying but you are NOT hiding it, everybody knows). So I had an idea that you had to spend time with him after he comes back to your apartment to make him feel more comfortable in order to unlock skills beyond his basics. Maybe having party members that also changed would speed this process up? or slow it down depending on which one it is (I feel like Leigh being around would NOT help). This would be a good bit more work, but it feels like it fits better to me.
Direction 2: Lyle learns his skills through level up like everyone else. This keeps things consistent with the rest of the game (which I think is important!), and is easier to balance. In-fiction we can assume that him leveling up represents time spent in the group and therefore time he spent getting more comfortable,
If anyone has any opinions on this, lemme know! I'm hoping to have the first version done tonight so I can do a test playthrough with him tomorrow.

the next patch came along and broke it lmao
well at least i had Lyle for a day! back to work I suppose
okay I have successfully implemented recruitable lyle, I am unstoppable!!!! (until the next patch comes along and breaks it)
currently just have it so you can ask if he wants to hang out after he develops a photo for you. I put him in the bathroom of your apartment since I felt like he'd prefer somewhere darker and less populated
the only interactions are the few ones he had with rat baby that were in the game files but not implemented, although I DID work out how those are done so I could theoretically add more.
still need to figure out his playstyle and stats though....
threw some gifs showing it working under the break!

I implemented the interactions in game so I could get screenshots, feel like this is a nicer way to present them!

Look Outside Unimplemented Interactions
I was poking around the game files and stumbled upon some cut/unimplemented interactions between some characters. Keep in mind none of this is canon unless at some point it is implemented (which might never happen!). I just thought they were cute and wanted to share!
(If you would like to look at these yourself, you can open up the game in RPG Maker MZ. They are in Common Event#0096.)
In the game files it is implied that Lyle was at one point able to join you in your apartment, potentially as a party member? The only interaction I was able to find with him though was a few short ones with the rat baby, who I named Sam Jr in my playthrough so whenever the script would use the baby's name I will just put Junior. Lyle/Rat Baby Interaction 1
Lyle cautiously approaches Junior and takes a picture.
Lyle: "I'll develop this tonight!"
Lyle Rat Baby Interaction 2
Lyle gives Junior a little photo album with only one picture inside, on the first page.
Lyle: "Here you go, the start of some precious memories!"
Lyle/Rat Baby Interaction 3
Lyle brings Junior more pictures of things he photographed nearby and begins a little show-and-tell with the child.
It also seems like Aster was intended to be in your apartment at one time. Same as Lyle the only interactions I was able to find were with the rat baby, although Aster's are more developed.
Aster/Rat Baby Interaction 1
Aster tries to approach the child, but loses his nerve and walks away. He holds some kind of image that he wants to show it.
You can tell he feels bad for losing his nerve. He avoids your gaze for a little while.
Aster/Rat Baby Interaction 2
Aster finally summons the courage to approach the kid. He clutches an image of the solar system in front of himself... mostly to keep the child from view.
Aster: "Y-you see this? L-look."
Junior grasps the image with a tentacle and yanks it from him.
Aster is visibly startled and seems like he might flee again, but manages to keep his composure this time.
Aster: "That's the sky. You see it? L-look at the stars..."
Taking a deep breath, he sits down near the child.
He almost goes on autopilot as he blathers about the solar system and its planets. His comfort zone.
(if Joel is recruited) Joel sits cross-legged and listens in on Aster's little astronomy lecture.
(if Sophie is recruited) Sophie adds helpful trivia for each planet. Venus has giant worms on it, she says. BIG worms the size of a BUS. She seems very knowledgeable. Aster makes no effort to correct her.
The child calmy sits through the whole thing, occasionally tugging at Aster's robe. The astronomer flinches every time, but he is obviously making an effort.
When Aster is done, he looks down to see Junior has fallen asleep, swaddled in his robes and clutching his leg.
He carefully lifts it off the ground, holding the little abomination in his arms for a few moments.
Aster/Rat Baby Interaction 3
Aster approaches the kid again, this time with a little astronomy picture book.
He seems to have mostly gotten over his fear, though he still winces when Junior climbs onto his lap.
if the rat baby can talk: The child manages to stay awake for the full lecture. Aster teaches it new words, helping with pronounciation.
if the rat baby CAN'T talk, instead: The child manages to stay awake for the full lecture. It laughs and points at various images in the picture book, which Aster patiently explains in plain words.
At the end of the lecture, you notice Aster doesn't wince at all when the child gives him a little hug.
there is a lot of interesting stuff in the game files. At one point it looks like there was a whole mechanic around raising the rat baby in different ways which would influence which KIND of rat baby you'd get, similar to like. Pip from Chrono Cross? Different interactions raise different hidden attributes for the rat and depending on which ones you get it had different forms? Or presumably different combat stats and skills. Instead the rat baby we get has a single skill which is from the Baby Teeth enemy for some reason that only does anything worthwhile if the user is Teething... which the rat baby can't do. And they only get half the attack from melee weapons! I obviously still love my child and would make the sacrifice for them every single time, but I do wish Junior was a bit more interesting as a party member. Maybe something more will be implemented in the future!
anyway I've hardly used tumblr but I love this game and want to see more fanart and discussions about it thank you all byyyyye
