Sometimes I think, sometimes I write. Some days I want to reach into the stars and tangle my fingers in the nebulae afar, and sometimes I wish that I could unhear and unsee my own past because the ground on which I stand is shaky.

So apparently my cyclical art motivation thing has looped back to making gif animations. Not good ones, but let's see how far I can work with this.

your half of the ransom by definitelynotshouting

After the massive chonker of my last bind, I wanted to do something simpler and less complicated. And there was one fic that is in my to-bind list that is both short and sweet to typeset: your half of the ransom by @definitelynotshouting.
Buuuut trust me to not do some experimenting, even now.
Also, apologies for the terrible lighting. And for adding glue to the spine which resulted in the ripping at the gutter for the title page. Oops.
As a fan of the Life SMP Series, I always wanted to bind something from Secret Life but kept it off due to other projects coming to the forefront. Well, that list is cleared! Time to do justice to the marooned GoodTimesWithScar and his empty sunflower fields!

I have done many a sewn-boards binding, but I wanted to experiment to see if I can make one for a single signature / booklet. If this is successful, I can use this to bind and embellish really short fanfics and even zines into proper books, with endpapers and hardcovers and even a nice spine!
Not only did my experiment turn out well, It has made me want to search for more short fics to turn into proper hardcovers!

I also tried another experiment with applying fanart and prints. I have pasted artworks onto book pages before, and they always end up either warping or waving from glue moisture. So this time, I only dabbed glue onto the top edges of these images and pasted them onto the beginning and last pages of the fic proper.
Verdict: they don't warp and are freely flexible, no stress onto the pages or spine! (yay!) But their bottom free-wheeling corners like to wedge themselves against the opposite pages next to the gutters, making them a danger for creasing and wear (nay!)
Special thanks to @definitelynotshouting for writing this fic and to @l3o-draws for her permission for me to use her beautiful Secret Life Scar fanart for this fic! You both are amazing!

I must be honest: once you accept immortality, you're stuck unless someone willingly takes your place. You can't lie when offering it. I suggest you refuse.

it does still make me insane specifically how many queer people lovingly embrace astrology. I went to a poetry workshop yesterday that was genuinely quite good but also included an option to disclose astrology designations during introductions and so many people broke out some variation of "I'm a [x] sum but I have a [y] placement and it SHOWS" girl no it doesn't. that's meaningless correlation you completely invented the causation

i have so many things i want to say about how the thing… the thing about Miyagi and Daniel is that it was never supposed to be about teaching Daniel to fight- Until the confrontation next to the chain fence, Daniel doesn’t even know he knows karate, and Miyagi wasn’t planning on teaching him.
So, sure the movie is a sports movie and it ends with a fight and it’s very simple and reassuring and all that. There’s this message about proving that you can fight back. The underdog can win. And it is there, and it’s fine. Im not saying it isn’t, but…
But in between that structure, there’s a relationship that is based around an act of unconditional kindness. That’s how it’s starts. The first thing Mr Miyagi does for Daniel is fix his bike. After the the OG cobras have wrecked it and after Daniel has his emotional breakdown, Mr Miyagi goes and says: i’m going to fix this.
He’s not expecting anything in return. Maybe some company but. It’s still all about love. And then Daniel goes down to say thanks and they just. Have a quiet moment together. There’s the metaphor of the bonsais and thinking about who you want to be, which is part if the point. But it’s also just a moment where Daniel gets to be calm. The whole time he has been going from painful moment to painful moment, this is like. It’s like. I wish I had the word or the metaphor for this. Es como el sol filtrandose por la ventana?
And in that sense, the movie is about the value of unconditional kindness in the face of unrelenting pain and loneliness. That’s the point of the teacher-student thing. He’s leading by example. he’s saying this is possible, even if its not always what you encounter. You don’t necessarily have to stand on your own, earn your place, show no fear. It is possible for people to care for each other without asking anything in return. it is possible. It is!
