"It's the hormones." She deadpanned. Lily studied her friend carefully. She knew what Marlene's dad meant to her. This was a delicate, fragile thing and she didn't want her friend to hurt more than she had to. "Of course, of course I will. I need more water anyhow."

marlene supposed lily was right, it had been an awfully long time since she had seen her father in anything but her memories. "when did you become the reasonable, level-headed one?" marlene joked, as though that was something new. she appreciated lily's offer and a smile came to her face at the thought of rosie, but still she shook her head. "i think - if i even get the nerve to talk to him tonight - it's something i'll need to do on my own. you could join me in acquiring some liquid courage, though."

"You're a something, that's for sure." Lily's smile came easier now. The girls had a way of doing that. Even if they drove her crazy they were her people. They always knew how to bring her back to herself.

"Maybe I'll have to talk more with Molly." She said, hand going to rest on her stomach. Family and homes. Lily had some thoughts on those too, and all she could hope was to give her kid somewhere safe and loving and warm. "If I'm stuck with anyone, I'm glad to be in this with all of you."

dorcas shrugged. "it's avant garde. I am a dadaist." defined by reaction to the horrors of war, it was fitting. besides, they all knew dorcas did not actually sleep. there was no time for that little necessity. the bed was mostly a fizzling daydream and occasional crashpad, and the real bedrooms were needed by all her strays, lily included for a time.

"molly weasley likes to mother. I think she would be happy to help at any time for any reason. she has very strong opinions about family and homes." she had equally strong opinions about the war in relation to each. opinions that were often shared loudly with dorcas while reiterating that arthur had a curfew unless someone's life was on the line. "none of us are in this alone, lily. we're stuck with each other."

Waking up in some odd mansion with a mask stuck to her face somehow wasn't the oddest thing that had happened to Lily. It wasn't any odder than getting pregnant mid-war, or discovering magic, or losing her sister to something she couldn't change. Keeping calm seemed the least she could do.

"Sorry," she told someone with the most familiar eyes, "I don't have potions on me, and nothing we've tried yet works. Don't claw at it okay? You'll only hurt yourself and I'd really rather not have that happen."

"It's not as though you were expecting to see him here." Lily said gently, standing so their shoulders pressed together. "Seeing someone in photos and in memories is different than seeing them as a ghost. Do you want to go say hi? I can come with you, if you'd like. We could go find that cutie you've been seeing, if you want her to meet him."

"i almost didn't recognize him." marlene pointed her chin in the direction of the man assisting the graphorn. "my own father and i almost didn't recognize him." she could feel tears threatening to pool in her eyes. "how sad is that?" she had been so young when he passed, not even at hogwarts, yet, but was that really an excuse?

"Your bedroom is a hallway, darling." Lily pointed out. "That's a point against you, I'm sorry." The rest of the facts did fall in Dorcas's favor, including the reason for the bed in the hallway. But she felt it did need pointing out.

She nodded and chewed on her lip, conceding that point. Someone had needed to look after Dorcas. To this day someone needed to look after Dorcas. Now that she was pregnant, someone else would have to help her make sure Dorcas still had a blanket over her at night. Maybe Adan. "You think Molly would do that? She's so busy, I would hate to bother her.

"I'm glad that I have you, and James, and the others. I'm glad I don't have to do this all alone."

"probably?" she snapped. "suck my ass; probably. you know good and well that I am definitely better, and more stylish, in every single way than potter. definitely." frankly, their tastes were wildly similar. "oh you will certainly be paying for his raising, and I imagine some karma sirius owes the universe. if he isn't a little shit, I wouldn't recognize him." dorcas smiled in her wolfish way as lily listed off a laundry list of concerns. "you woke up every time I snuck back into the dorm after an allnighter of studying, and I was a lot more purposefully quiet than an infant will be. even when I didn't make it back. how many times did you find me in the common and toss a blanket over me? then just ask molly how to hold a baby proper. it can't be that hard if she lets ted do it." the plan of action rolled easily off her tongue. dorcas was uniquely trained to intake a problem, quickly assess, and render a solution. scenario after scenario and strategy after strategy were meticulously posed, process, and memorized in an effort to create the little general. "so if you give them a complex, then at least they'll probably have a good sense of humor." she tossed an arm around lily's shoulder. "and I have never met someone with more capacity for outright love than you, lils. dick or demon or just another little deer, you're gonna love that kid maybe half as much as it'll love you. alright? don't sweat that stuff."

"Your taste in decor is probably better than James'." Lily said, fondness leaking into her voice. It wasn't entirely true. She'd probably like most anything James picked out, his taste wasn't nearly that awful. "It will probably cosmic retribution for all the nonsense he pulled as a child, I bet. God, what am I not nervous about? What if I don't wake up when they cry, or what if I hold them wrong or give them some sort of complex, or end up raising a horrible little demon child? What if they don't like me? What if I don't like them? What if my kid is a dick?"

"I can afford it." she grinned, which was true. it had been a bit of a surprise, actually. gran had always been complicated. she said that dorcas would not inherit anything for being born by a muggle, as if that was a choice. she also said that dorcas still had her blood and shouldn't cower to anyone. it took too long for her to realize that her grandmother tried to love her as best she could with the limitations of a society it was downright dangerous to reject. the woman wanted dorcas to at least be strong and proud. there were days she hated her gran, but not always. the woman had left her everything. she raised her, poorly as it may have been, but at least she stuck around and tried. there was nothing short of relief to know that lily's kid would never have to wonder why their parents weren't there. why they didn't love them. "I just can't imagine marauder genetics making anything but a shit eating grin sort of little boy, but I guess it wouldn't matter either way. what are you most nervous about?"

“it must be all the money.” dorcas teased. brat, she may be, but spoiled brat was another question. there was a chance with a slightly different mother, she would be no different from any other pureblood cutthroat. being nothing but a halfblood, however, she was just angry and flush with gold no one wanted her to inherit. “and that’s why you’re going to make a very good mum.” she snorted. “nah, it’s a boy. I’m calling it.”

“I’m making you buy me a crib.” Lily joked back. James had plenty of money, they didn’t need any help with baby things. It was very odd in all honesty. Lily had grown up comfortably sure but not the way James had. “That’s what my mum says, too. But Dad says it’s a girl. I can’t decide if I have a preference either way.”

“which is two marks down in the column of reasons I do not fear lily evans pottypants which is unfortunately the name you have to take now for letting james pottypants knock you up.” the smile remained on her face. dorcas still had not really told lily about going to see the woman who gave birth to her. she had not really told anyone. then again, no one needed to know. it had not changed anything. “better than mine.” she nudged lily with her elbow. “I think that you have a great capacity to love, lils. even us undesirable, unlovable sorts. I think any kid would be relieved and grateful to have that kind of reassurance. I also think he’s going to pee in your mouth at least once so. make of that what you will.”

Lily stuck out her tongue. “You’re such a brat.” She complained, but it had a smile to it now. Tuney had a point when she’d said Lily’s friends weren’t necessary always the kindest and in some way that had rubbed off on her. But she loved her friends, down to their very atoms. “Hey now, you’re anything but undesirable or unlovable. I love you very much.”

She wrinkled her nose, one hand resting on her stomach. “Ugh, he probably will. Not looking forward to that part. Though, it could be a girl. We haven’t found out yet.”

Lily's favorite daydream of the moment is one where Dorcas dances around her kitchen with Lily's kid in her arms, and Dorcas looks so happy. She likes to imagine a future where Dorcas doesn't have to carry the world on her shoulders.

“I’m not scared of anyone I’ve made piss themself laughing before.” dorcas smiled in her wolfish way. “so I think what you mean to say is ‘thank you dorcas for taking everyone’s mind off this potentially stressful situation and giving me a purposeful and meaningful job that I enjoy instead of sidelining me entirely from this cause I am passionate about as any sane person would because it’s a goddamn war, and I am a soon to be a mother.’ right? yeah.” a shadow fell over her eyes. “the world is short on good mums lils.”

“That only happened twice!” Lily said, well aware that this wasn’t quite the defense she wanted it to be. The fight drained out of her at Dorcas’s final point. Lily hated Dorcas’s mum, and she hated Dorcas’s Gran, and if she could go back in time and give Dorcas a parent that loved her the way she deserved, Lily would. “Fine. Fine, I’ll organize your files. ... Do you really think I’ll be a good mum?”

“you can help from behind a desk. I don’t know anyone who can file quite like you do and you’ve seen my papers. I could use it.” dorcas did not and would not budge. “molly weasley is not a member of the order of the phoenix and therefore out of my jurisdiction. also she scares me a little.”

“Stop buttering me up with these true facts about my filing abilities.” Lily shot back. “Your papers are horrid and you could use it, but how that can be all I’m alloted? You’re worse than Mungo’s, they’re letting me work complicated potions for at least another two months! Why don’t I scare you? I should scare you.”

“adan can do the whole thing. so can marlene, actually. well thought. I’ll get them both on it.” dorcas did not entertain the idea of lily even attempting verbal instruction. it put both her and the students at a loss. it was not worth it by any measure. “get used to desk duty, champ, but don’t worry. unlike mine, it’s only temporary.”

Marlene would do excellent, of course, and Adan was more than capable. That wasn’t the point. “I don’t want to be on desk duty, I want to be helping.” Not that desk duty wasn’t helpful, but it wasn’t the help Lily wanted. “Molly’s had two kids, and she did loads of things while pregnant!”

dorcas paused and wheeled around, falling off her piano bench into the floor and then hopping onto her feet with surprising agility. “babe. please don’t make be authority. don’t put me in a position where I have to lay down the rules. let’s just go with the obvious. that is not fucking happening.” she said without hesitation. “no extra bodies at self-defense. that includes in utero and you know why. I’ll get someone else on it. maybe adan.”

Lily crossed her arms, stubborn as hell. “Why not? I can teach someone to punch just fine for at least four more months. It’s not like I’ll be letting people toss me around or anything. Adan can do all the physical stuff. Hell, Marlene could it. Come on, Dor.”
