One of my brothers has this thing where he likes to be included on sibling movie night but he will not sit down or actually join us, he’ll just wander around the house and periodically show up to lurk in the doorway or lean on someone’s seat
And *I* have this thing where I always always know when he’s there, because every time he’s not wandering around like the ghost of bob marley and isn’t immediately visible it’s because he’s stopped moving to watch the film from directly behind me, which makes the back of my neck tingle like a dog sensing an earthquake
Which has on more than one occasion resulted in me interrupting the movie to tell him to just sit the fuck down and stop lurking in the shadows, Jesus Christ, it’s like I’m being haunted by the memory of ancient sins
Which has in turn been shortened to just ā€œancient sinsā€, every time I feel him doing it again
So to summarize, sometimes when my siblings and I get together for a movie night, we’ll all be sitting in the dark in complete silence until my ass deadpan announces ā€œancient sinsā€ and a 90 pound 5’11ā€ Slenderman looking motherfucker emerges from the shadows behind me like a jumpscare incarnate in Batman pajamas pants and informs me that we are out of orange soda

Running a disability-focused sideblog and wondering, how do I make posts inclusive to people with IDs or difficulties with language? Plus, any other accessibility tips in general that I may not have thought of.
Hi! First of all, kudos to you for talking about disability. I don't know all of the possible accomodations since humans are so varied and diverse, but I'll do my best!
If anyone reading this knows some that I don't mention, please feel free to mention them in the reblogs or comments! It would be greatly appreciated <3 (heart)
Accessibility on blogs
[Large text: Accessibility on blogs]
Before I get into the accessibiliity options, here are a few questions for you:
Do you talk about only a specific disability, or about disability as a whole?
Do you have a target audience?
Accessibility looks different for everyone. An example unrelated to blogs would be that an autistic person might need it to be really quiet, while another might need to for it to be be loud.
It depends on who you're posting for/about/to. If it's general, then be general about the accessibility, and see how it goes. Maybe your followers will reccomend some accessibility measures as well!
Images
[Large text: Images]
Image descriptions! I'm surprised not more people do this. You can put them in the alt or under the image itself. Some put both (which I should consider doing).
Some people use the alt option to put extra information on the image instead of describing it. This is not accessible for people who rely on image descriptions.
Videos and GIFs
[Large text: Videos and GIFs]
Subtitles! A lot of youtube videos (and such) use auto-generated captions or simply don't use them at all. This makes it very hard for people who are d/Deaf, hard of hearing and who have similar conditions to understand and follow along.
Audio description! Offering audio description makes videos accessible to people with vision-related disabilities.
Video transcripts! Essentially, this means describing in text what happens in the video, both visually and audibly. These tend to be longer, but they really help, even with people who don't necessarily struggle with vision or hearing-related problems.
Text
[Large text: Text]
Short paragraphs! Long posts, especially those with a single, cluttered paragraph, are harder to read for people with learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities.
Punctuation! Some people tend to type things out without adding the proper punctuation. Screenreaders will read the text out without taking the necessary breaks there would be, so it can be difficult to understand.
Careful use of emojis! Not all screenreaders understand and read out emojis. This is why I will put a little description of the kaomoji or smiley whenever I use them, like this = :) (smiley face), <3 (heart).
Font descriptions! Organizing posts, especially long ones, makes it easier for people to understand what the post is about. You might've noticed that I put a little bracket below every title. This is to make it more clear what is a title and what's not for screenreaders, and I think I've seen people do it with fonts (such as "Lucille" on tumblr) and colors.
Tone indicators! People with autism, speech impediments or intellectual disability may struggle to perceive sarcasm or jokes. Mentioning the tone of your sentence may help.
Warnings and Tags
[Large text: Warnings and Tags]
Tagging your content appropriately is important, especially when it comes to triggers or warnings.
The most common one is flashing lights or eyestrain for epilepsy or migraines. A common mistake is to tag "tw epilepsy". This does not tell the person what the trigger is, and rather sounds like epilepsy itself is a trigger.
Loud noises are also a known trigger, but some lesser-known triggers include eating noises for people with misophonia (among other things).
Sensitive topics mentioned in the following paragraph!
Obviously, if you talk about sensitive topics such as self-harm, abuse or ableism, it's important to mention it at the beginning and in the tags so that people know what they're walking into when they read your post.
Respect and inclusion
[Large text: Respect and inclusion]
I don't know if your blog is about a specific disability, but if it's about dibilitating conditions in general, then there's a lot of topics that come into play, including some that are less talked about or even excluded from disabled communities.
When people see "mental health", they probably will think of depression and anxiety. However, if we take mental health as a whole, it also include thought disorders (eg. schizophrenia), personality disorders, etc. They are already unfortunately heavily stigmatized and demonized, and deemed "scary" disorders. People with these disorders deserve just as much consideration as people with more common or known disorders.
When people see "neurodiversity", they think autism and ADHD. Neurodiversity includes any way that the brain can function differently, which includes tic disorders, epilepsy, thought disorders, etc. Claiming that neurodiversity is only about AuDHD is inaccurate.
When people see "disability", they think about mobility aid users, chronic ilnesses and d/Deaf or blind people. Disability is a very broad term that encompasses many more conditions, such as limb differences, people who need a catheter or similar aids, facial differences, rare diseases or disabilities and so many more. People with rare, stigmatized or "gross" disabilities (to quote some people) have just as much value as able-bodied or otherwise disabled people.
Closing thoughts
[Large text: Closing thoughts]
As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, it's hard to know exactly what everyone needs. I think starting globally and being attentive to your followers' needs is the way to do it, if that makes sense.
I hope this was helpful! I think I got a bit sidetracked at the end, but I feel this was an important addition.
I probably missed some accessibility options, since I'm not very well-versed in online or electronic measures. If anyone has additional ideas, they are more than welcome to share!
Have a great day <3 (heart)

i’m gonna say something that doesn’t feel good but you might need to hear it: bending over backwards being a people-pleaser, being conflict averse and not telling anyone your needs, and then being resentful and upset when your needs aren’t met is a You problem first
