A glimpse into Sebastian's arc in the fic/AU.

I think under all the trauma and bitterness and aggression he truly does want a connection of some kind again, but the idea of being known and vulnerable has been tainted by Urbanshade, as well as the thought of him being able to be the same guy Aster grew to trust seeming impossibly out of reach. In his eyes, he's adapted the same selfish mindset of her abusers, putting her second to his own wants and needs and being too unstable for her to truly be safe with him. Mr. Lopee also uses him as a pawn for his own beef with Aster's predecessor, and Sebastian admittedly falls for his manipulation when his own insecurities and worries get jabbed at.

He and Aster do have a pretty nasty rough patch early on which only feeds into the guilt and shame and fear, but Aster, while hurt by the things he said, understands where it all came from when the dust settles, and his remorse alone is proof that he's not like those who have hurt her for their own pleasure. She's less of a pushover now, but Urbanshade hasn't hardened her heart beyond empathy, and she can sense that Sebastian's no different, coping and defense mechanisms be damned.

And so he is given a second chance, and she lets her kinder, softer, more vulnerable side show to him, granting him the same amount grace and warmth he gave her while also showing that she's still willing to put her trust in him. Sebastian is averse to it at first, both out of his own hang-ups about touch and forming connections and that aforementioned guilt and Mr. Lopee continuing to be a dick, but his old feelings for Aster slowly re-surface, having not been stomped out like he thought, and her gentle touch, comforting presence and respect of his boundaries slowly but surely set her apart from others and allow him to allow her in at his own pace while also refusing to abandon him like he's been led to believe she would. As cheesy and cliché as it sounds, she makes him feel human again, which comes with the mortifying (and often embarrassing, bro is going through a puppy crush at 31) ordeal of being known, but with it also comes the comfort and warmth of being so very loved.

Things have changed, maybe to a point where they'll never truly get what they once had back completely, but she loves him just the same, and while he struggles to express it coherently, he loves her just the same, too.

Pardon the yapping, I just have a lot of thoughts on these two and their dynamic. I do not want to woobify Sebastian or take away the complexity of his character, but I also like the idea of him still having empathy and humanity deep within his core that Aster can draw out compared to the cruelty she draws out of Urbanshade, and you can rip that out of my cold-dead hands.

A former Blacksite Overseer and one of the heroes of the Banlands Expeditions, Judas is a greedy, cruel, arrogant piece of shit and Aster’s former guardian. After losing his status and being delegated to Prison Warden and being used for the gill experiments, he’s only gotten worse.

Still working out his DNA, currently he has arapaima, mantis shrimp, black mamba, marlin and orca. His poison isn’t outright lethal, but it’s hella painful.
