My parents were married on December 19th, so we always put the Christmas tree up on their anniversary. So my brothers and I spent hours drawing and gluing and cutting out paper decorations. We also strung popcorn and cranberries that year. The only thing that wasn’t homemade was the lights and the icycles. It was a wonderful tree, and my mom still has those old paper decorations. Both of my brothers are gone from us now, so each year I put two of the paper decorations on the tree in honor of them. On Christmas Eve, we got to open one gift, and it was always pajamas. When bedtime came, we would put on our new pj’s and put a glass of milk and some homemade cookies on a little tray and put it in the living room for Santa. During the night “Santa” left gifts wrapped up in colorful paper and ribbons, and he always ate the cookies and drank the milk. We were always told to get to bed on time, because Santa couldn’t come if we were still awake.

When I got older, I was allowed to walk down the aisle and stop at every pew, and the first person seated would light their candle from the big one I carried. There was always a children’s time, when the Pastor called the little children to come and sit up front, near the alter, while he told them a story having to do with the birth of Jesus, and gave each kid a candy cane. Christmas Eve services were so great back then. Now there are no candles, just little battery operated lights, and the service is held at either 3 pm or 6 pm, because families are too busy to stay up so late on Christmas Eve.

This is a fun question. For about 35 years now I’ve hosted a Christmas party for about 30 friends. The ‘price’ to get in is a homemade ornament. You would not believe what my friends have come up with. I have numerous boxes of Santa Grinch I hate people but I love my Arsenal 2024 shirt . About 8 years ago, I told them to not bring anything. But last week, party weekend, about 15 still brought one. They all said that they just loved doing it and it put them in a party, Christmas mood. So the last 8 years I had to come up an idea for the tree. Some of my best were: going through printed pictures of my friends, had some of their pets- most now gone. Vacation pics with one or more in it, and just neat / interesting landmarks etc. took over 100 to Walgreens . For a dime/picture, the copied them onto print stock. I refilled the originals and then cut out the the thing in pic I liked. Bought a stack of manila folders and a bottle of Elmer’s glue, both cheap. Opened the folders and laid them flat on my dining table that had a sheet on it, arranged all the cut-outs on the open folders to get as many as possible on each one put glue on the back of the image, pressed it onto the folder. A couple hours later, cut the pics out of the folder Now the pics were very sturdy. On the back, more glue and a metal ornament hanger. (Like 200 for $ 1) guests had a great time retelling old stories associated with the memories the photos inspired. Hope you like my ideas.

The holidays are a good time for groups to suspend their normal rules, let some hair down and make a real difference to people, the excuse, it’s Christmas. One of the UK supermarkets turned their awning into a light tunnel that received tens of thousands of visitors, and got lots of good press. Staff are usually willing to make the effort, and management are keen to do something, it’s a matter of co-ordinating and making it happen. Rather than indulging in more selfish office practices, you could actually boost the community and get more people through the door instead. For private firms, open days are a brilliant idea too, you can combine it with recruitment to create an informal jobs fair, very handy at the holidays as lots of people become unemployed at this difficult time.

Either way, I guess you don’t make much profit on Christmas trees. Possibly that eats away at your soul? I really can’t why else you would think anyone is against Christmas these days. Some Christians claim to be against the secularism and commercialism of Christmas. Their line is: Don’t take Christ out of Christmas. The problem with that is that these self-same Christians love Nativity Scenes, Angels, Shepherds, and other fancy stuff that that requires commercialism, i.e. stores where they can buy the stuff for their scenes and celebrations. Not to mention gift-giving. And they own the stores and businesses that sell this Christmasy stuff. So who, I ask, is against Christmas if it isn’t guys like you who can’t make a profit off it?

When we were first married, we always went to my parents’ house on Christmas Day. All of us (my parents, me, my husband, brothers, SIL, nieces, nephew) would open our gifts and then have a Christmas dinner. My husband and I started a tradition of having a Christmas Eve dinner together, just the two of us, and exchanging our gifts to each other after dinner. After a couple of years, we switched from a Baptist church to a Methodist church that has a Christmas Eve service (the Baptist church never had a service on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day unless one of those days happened to be Sunday). The pattern for Christmas Eve then became church, dinner, gifts (and, for some years, a second late evening church service). Meanwhile, my mother finally had to admit pulling off a Christmas dinner was too much, and we went to finger foods or sandwiches. Then she decided that getting everything wrapped and ready by the 25th was too hard, and my brother and his family kept arriving later and later every year because they would spend the afternoon at her mother’s house 120 miles away, so the family Christmas get-together got moved to the Saturday after Christmas, then to the Saturday after New Year’s, then to the second Saturday in January. Christmas Day itself became a non-event. We still keep our tradition of having our dinner and gift exchange on Christmas Eve, and of course, the church service is still that evening as well. Christmas Day is now just a nice day off from work to relax.
