Cases came in dribs and drabs --- one minute you’re scraping the bottom of an abysmal barrel and the next EUREKA; you’re flicking through case files faster than Red Rum at The Grand National. The case in question had been one of colossal loss, the type newscasters referred to as TRAGEDY whilst theorists opted for human error --- either way, with a death toll in excess of twelve, it was certainly one to remember. Erin reached for her coat in the get-up-and-go fashion people often exhibited when strapped for time. “ You’re right, he did – it raised some questions but no one really looked twice at the guy ” She moved uneasily from one foot to the other as if standing still would mean an end to their lead. “ This guy has always been ten steps ahead of us --- we might finally have a chance to CLOSE THE GAP. ”

One of her specialties of being a good detective was her psychology background and WITH that, she had an insight into the mind of every murderer they come across. Even the biggest pieces of shit who were obviously sicker than your average first-degree murderer, she knew EXACTLY how they worked. With someone who took trophies from cutting a piece of someone’s skin, one would think she can get a better idea. But then the other detective hit the nail on the head, of course, she remembers the fire of ‘08. An entire apartment complex went up in flames, and that fire was UNCONTROLLABLE. “ Shit —. “ She breathes out, and starts to flick through a few of her paper’s on her desk, she’s searching for a police officer who was one of the victims. “ One of the first victims, didn’t he move out to Chicago after the fire? “ If she remembers’s correct there were a little over a dozen people that died in that fire. “ We should get the list of those who died that night in the paper. I know the New York Time’s printed out all the names, we’ll hit the library after I find this file.

Erin Lindsay – 3x10 Now I’m God
“I miss Camille…I didn’t know that moms could be kind, or brave, or unselfish. She didn’t even like me when you first brought me home - you remember that? She already had her hands full with Justin and I showed up and I just doubled her trouble, we were hellions. I remember this one day I came home, Iron Maiden t-shirt, skirt up to here, you know? She’s just waiting for in the living room, she has a dress from Marshall Fields. She told me that you saw something in me that was worth sacrificing for and so she would too. And she used Christmas money to buy me that dress.”

“ About three years ago INTELLIGENCE picked up a case; same M.O --- we liked this guy Josh Garcia for the murders but he lawyered up and we didn’t have enough to pin him. THIS CAN’T BE A COINCIDENCE. ”
“ wait, ya know this guy? who are we lookin’ at? ”

“ Without you there wouldn’t be anything left to investigate, GOOD JOB. Take it easy okay? These calls aren’t easy on any of us. ”
the firefighter winces, “ just telling you what’s on the rumor mill. third story up, where the fire most likely started. we called homicide as soon as we found them. not much to see, but definitely the cause of the arson. have fun, detective. “

A sentence opening with an APOLOGY is an ominous one --- ‘ sorry I picked up the last frozen dinner ’ or ‘ sorry I rear ended your car ’ but this was more genuine than someone contending for frozen lasagne. “ hey ” Digits that had once defended her iced Manhattan closed around Lux’s hand “ We’ll catch ‘em. ” Cases involving the mistreatment of children were particularly hard to swallow ( think sword not capsule ) “ He’s a BRAVE KID – look, Lux -- ” Erin reached into the chest pocket of her shirt and pulled out a small, rectangular card of which was predominantly the FIVE-POINTED STAR OF THE CHICAGO POLICE FORCE “ I can’t talk about this HERE – but my number’s on my card.” She tapped twice on the card, collected her drinks and returned to her friends.
it was a deep - seated instinct that prompted her initial response. despite all that had occurred —- ( the sight of a boy with not a person in the world to care for him, teamed with the fact that she was entering her nineteenth hour without rest ) SHE NODDED HER HEAD. but then tears began to prickle her eyes, distorting her vision, and she knew it was no use. her nodding motion diverted, now shaking from one side to the other. “ i’m sorry, i — i came here to find you. i know that i’m WAY OUT OF LINE, but i need to ask you about a case i’m told you picked up today. about … about a boy. ”

No self-respecting perpetrator would stroll through CENTRAL PARK with ‘piece of shit’ printed across his tee in bold, black lettering. They needed more. “ What’s the link, Mia? ” There was a board in the centre of the room – much like their case ideology the board had been left bare aside from crime scene photography and popular theories “ What links would a guy like this have to both Chicago and New York --- what made him choose these cities. Our cities. ” They’d already hit the obvious choices; businessmen, conferences --- they were missing something. “ oh my god --- ” She pulled back from the board with a freshly lit light bulb metaphorically looming over her head “ You remember the fire in ’08, right? --- gross police misconduct, a lack of fire personnel --- both NYPD and CPD were involved in that case --- we need names of everyone that lost their lives that day --- there has to be a connection. ”

Cases as intricate as the one she was on now came every once in a while. Sometimes she worked ALONE ( which preferably is how she liked it anyways ) and other times she was assigned a partner. Really it depended on how the Captain was feeling that day. However this time she was assigned a partner from Chicago because it seemed that her perp was criss crossing states and committing his gruesome murder’s in both states. So here she was, partnered up with Detective Erin Lindsay from the Chicago Police Department. Naturally it took some getting USED to whenever she was working side by side with someone. It’s only been a week and a half, slowly but surely Erin was warming up to her. She questioned whether or not TRUST would be an issue considering she would be gone by the time the case is closed. But then she did have to keep some form of trust ( even a little ) to know that she got her back checked at all times.
Who ever this guys was, the man ( or potentially woman ) they were chasing after was. He sure as hell did a number on his victims. Sadly they were all emergency services personal, EMT’S, firemen and even local police officers. Which struck a CORD in Mia’s sympathy and put her determination to catch the fucker in overdrive. “ A piece of shit with a hard on for killing emergency services folk. That’s my best guess.. “

This guy wasn’t about to leave Sobriety City on the narcotic express, this wasn’t the first time his FIX had hit an unforeseen delay --- either that, or his self-discipline was OFF THE CHARTS GOOD. His hubristic mannerisms and seemingly sincere chatter gave away a number of things; the first, and most central being that he wasn’t going to talk. She and her team could play GOOD COP, BAD COP all afternoon --- but some things aren’t worth fighting for. “ Your RECORD was wiped before we even slapped on the cuffs, wasn’t it? ”
❛ good luck, luv. there won’t be a RECORD t’a check out. ❜
he tilts his head,
❛ i don’ know if ya know this — but i have people on my arse ANYWAYS. tellin’ you a name would make me DOUBLE FUCKED, which won’t benefit me in any way. i’ll take my chances with those twenty-four hours. ❜
