Generic City
In, The Generic City, Rem Koolhaas asks us to consider the disadvantages of identity, and conversely, the advantages of blankness. He asserts that a city bound to its identity resists expansion, interpretation, and renewal. Koolhaas goes on to define and embrace the idea of a generic city as one that is liberated from the straight-jacket of identity, history, and context. “It is a city without history. It is big enough for everybody. It is easy.”
Istanbul’s strong identities and multiple histories ask for an urban of multiplicities. For this reason, a project for Istanbul should be neither totally generic nor specific; it should situate itself somewhere between the two. It should be in-between.

From an objective point of view, the impact of urban gap space is not always positive. Due to space restrictions, people in such narrow and long Spaces may have psychological depression. In countries and regions with poor economic development, they are faced with health and hygiene problems, and even become hotbeds of crime and urban gray areas. Therefore, how to turn the disadvantage of gap space into advantage and the negative into positive.
By transforming the sense of oppression brought by the crevice space into a sense of security and belonging, the crevice space will bring into full play the great potential of promoting human interaction.

Gap Space
The Gap Space in the city is in the ambiguous area of the boundary between public space and private space. Under the condition of reasonable utilization, these insignificant Spaces can bring into play the great potential of promoting the interaction between the city and the neighborhood.

In-between
STAG is a mutation of a stool and bag inspired by the value of flexibility, convenience and pragmatism: emblems of Hong Kong’s identity. Each STAG is unique and made out of 100% recycled Hong Kong advertisement billboards carefully sewn by three craftsmen whose workshops exist in these same back lanes.
How the city functions and how people overcome their spatial restrictions by finding «the in-between» in the rules and spaces of the city.

The relationship and transformations between the shadow and the object. Shadows not only show the silhouette of the object, but also sometimes create a new different shape from the original object depending on the light source and the medium.

As long as there is light in the city, there is shadow.

The building, the glass, the curtain all become the medium of the shadow.

We are sometimes on the same side as objects. Then we can see the shadow show in the floor, the building, the steps and the wall.

The nature of the shadow play
The shadow play needs an object, a source of light and a translucent screen. When an object blocks light, a shadow is cast. And the shadow only show the object’s silhouettes.
Tumblr media
If you just look at people's movements and posture, it's hard to figure out what they're trying to imitate. If you see the shadow, whcih only show their silhouettes, it is easy to know they are imitating aliens.
Tumblr media
Each shadow is unique. The shape, form and size changes organically based on the light source’s strength, placement (different angles creates different shapes) and distance between the object.
The object is fixed. Changing the position of the light and the distance between the object will change the shadow.

Difference between the shadow play with other theater form
Theatrical performances are performed on a stage in three-dimensional space, while the "shadow" of shadow play is a two-dimensional space performance form without depth.
