Examples of LinkedIn as communication technology
1) Point of contact at IBM during the hiring process
2) Jobs recommended based on my current job and the connections I have
3) InMail from someone seeking a Front End Developer for his company
4) Sending a recruiter contact information and a resume to apply for a position he reached out to me to apply for
5) Activity: sharing blog posts, giving out ‘likes’, keeping up with professional activities of colleagues

I wouldn’t be where I am today career wise without LinkedIn. Today, I am a Cognitive Software Developer Intern at IBM.Â
However a year ago, that was not the case.
I was a computer science instructor at Coding4Youth. I was glad to work with kids and tech them how to code simple video games or basic while loops. I liked working with them, don’t get me wrong, but it’s hard paying off student loans with a minimum wage job.Â
A month into my instructor role. I was contacted by Kyle, a recruiter at TEKsystems, via LinkedIn. He told me there was a job opportunity for someone with my particular background at a highly prestigious company.
Due to the limited amount of information on my LinkedIn profile, at first glance, it sounds to good to be true. How did he find me anyhow? Why did he want to interview me, of all people on LinkedIn? It sounded like a scam, but I perused his LinkedIn profile as well as the website of the company he claimed to work for, TEKsystems, and it seemed legitimate. His profile didn’t seem too fishy, so I thought maybe, just maybe, it could be genuine approach.Â
I’m glad I gave it a chance because it was.Â
I ended up giving him a call, setting up a face-to-face interview, and proceeded to fill out my I-9 documents so I could start work as a Network Analyst Intern at Apple. I could not believe the easy, painless, interview process I went through to get me to a career position that will benefit me in later hiring endeavors.
Kyle sought me out, found me, and gave me an opportunity that put me in an ideal position that helped advance my work experience. The weight of the title on my resume was a big bonus that helped jumpstart my career and helped me eventually land my dream job or my current job at IBM.Â
Kyle and I had lunch after I stopped working through TEKsystems, but since then we have kept in touch through LinkedIn. He congratulated me on my new role via LinkedIn, and I had recently ‘liked’ his promotion to Account Manager at TEKsystems. He still shows his support by occasionally ‘liking’ my blog posts on LinkedIn as well.
I’m glad that we are able to keep in contact through LinkedIn, because I know he can get updates on my career and see what a positive impact he made on my career by recruiting me. Likewise, I hope I made a positive impact on his career by recruiting an employee like me.
