BIDDING OPEN!!!
Here is my offer: https://fth2020offerings.dreamwidth.org/tag/username:+links
Bidding is NOW OPEN!
The hour has struck, and bidding is now officially open for Fandom Trumps Hate 2020!
This year, we have almost 600 fan creators who have stepped up to offer almost 750 fanworks, in exchange for their high bidders’ donations to any of several nonprofits working to protect those who have been targeted by the current administration.
In its three prior auctions, FTH participants have come together to raise over $73,000. We’re hoping that this year’s auction will bring our combined total to $100K.
You can find all of this year’s offerings (almost 750 of them!) at fth2020offerings over on Dreamwidth. The stickied posts at the top of that blog should tell you everything you need to know about the logistics of bidding.
If you didn’t take advantage of browsing week – or even if you did! – you might find it helpful to look our our roundup of fan labor offerings and our roundup of “other” type digital fanworks.
And if you’re interested in tangible fancrafts, please visit the Fan Crafts Bazaar!
Bidding will remain open until Friday, February 28th at 8pm EST.
N.B. we use scripts to auto-open and auto-close the bidding forms, so it’s likely that some of the forms will open slightly early, and some of them will likely close a bit late. This is not ideal, but it’s also unavoidable; please read our bidding policies to see how we are handling it. If you happen to see a bid that was placed before 8am EST on the 24th, please email us to let us know so we can delete it.

I’m in for Sherlock/Good Omens!! Don’t hesitate to browse and bid!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Browsing week STARTS NOW!
Browsing week has officially begun! Head on over to the fth2020offerings blog on dreamwidth to find all almost-750 (!!!! we’re still not over it) of this year’s fanwork offerings for the 2020 Fandom Trumps Hate auction.
We’ve got all the information you’ll need (we think/hope) in the first stickied post… including a link to the second stickied post, which will help you search through all the offerings (did we mention that there are nearly 750 of them?) by any of several different kinds of tags. What is browsing week? Browsing week is the week before bidding starts. All of the offerings are publicly visible, so potential bidders have a chance to look at all of the different fanworks on offer and decide what interests them most. It’s also a chance for us to correct errors or omissions in the offerings posts before anyone places a bid.
A couple of quick notes:
1) Fanwork creators: please go look at your own offering post to make sure everything is correct! Mistakes happen, and one of the purposes of browsing week is to give you, and us, a chance to make sure your offerings post looks exactly how you want it to before the auction actually begins. Our post on searching tags will help you find yourself quickly. Please be extra sure to check that your post is tagged properly and, if you have multiple auctions, that the links go to the correct form and spreadsheet for each auction. Remember, if you find a mistake, please email us or leave a DW comment, do not contact us via Tumblr.
2) Although signups for the auction closed a few weeks ago, signups for the unofficial fan crafts bazaar don’t close for another week! Look for another post about the bazaar later tonight.
3) Remember those roundup posts about fan labor and “other” type fanworks that we did during signups? (Here they are, in case you don’t: fan labor “other” fanworks) We are going to post up-to-date versions of both of those, complete with links to the creators themselves. Watch for those posts later this week!
Bidding opens at 8am EST on Monday, February 24th. You have one week to scout your options and make your plans. Use it wisely.
Wait, what is FTH anyhow? What is this random thing that’s been reblogged into my feed? You can learn more about us here.

Whoop whoop!! Do not forget to browse and bid!!!
Sign-ups are closed!
You guys, we are absolutely blown away. This year we’ve amassed a whopping 748 sign-ups. We haven’t seen this much participation since our inaugural year in 2017, and we could not be more excited if we tried, truly.
Thank you to everyone who’s offered to created a fanwork this year; we are so very happy to have you join us. <3 The browsing period will open in a few weeks, and us mods have a lot of behind-the-scenes work to do before then. Don’t be alarmed if we’re a little quiet between now and browsing; it just means we’re hard at work getting everyone’s forms set up. =] We appreciate your patience in the meantime!
We’ll still be available through email, so if you have questions please feel free to contact us at fandomtrumpshate at gmail dot com.
And don’t forget our Fan Crafts Bazaar if you create or want to receive physical fanworks! We’ll be putting up our listing of all the stalls when browsing week starts on Feb 17, and we’ll keep signups open until the 24th.

bidders are every bit as vital to the auction as creators
Last day to sign up for Fandom Trumps Hate 2020!
Signups are closing for FTH 2020 Friday night, January 31 at midnight PST! (The form might be open later than that but if you want to be sure you should get in before then.)
Be sure to read our FAQ and check out this year’s calendar, then head on over to the signup form!
If you’re eagerly waiting to bid, auction posts will go up for browsing on February 17, so stay tuned!

CQFD as they say in French.
do you think acd liked men? and what about his sherlock holmes?
Wow, this ask just like dragged me back to 2014 when I was writing serious blog posts about this kind of stuff.
It’s honestly too difficult for me to dig back through my extremely poorly tagged blog and link you to stuff I wrote before SO I guess I’m just gonna have to talk about it.
First off, before I go spouting opinions, I’ll tell you sort of briefly what I’m basing my opinion on:
ACD was a really prolific writer so I can’t even say I’ve read most of what he wrote, but I have read the entire Holmes canon, the Professor Challenger series, and a decent selection of his non-Holmesian short stories, as well as his journals from his 1880 whaling voyage (published as a book called Dangerous Work, which I highly recommend), and a bunch of his letters (many of which are published in Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life In Letters, which is also a great read).
In addition to that, I’ve been a history nerd for a long time and over the last several years I’ve read a whole lot of 19th century and early 20th century queer history (the Trials of Oscar Wilde was honestly kind of mind-blowing, and the entire story behind John Addington Symonds preserving his memoirs for later publication literally brings me to tears); as well as 19th century queer lit like Sins Of the Cities of the Plain (it’s a short read but it’s terrible and I only recommend it for its historical import), the Picture of Dorian Gray some other stuff. I’m a little too lazy to go peruse the bookshelf right now to compose a complete reading list, but maybe I should sometime soon because there’s some fun reads out there.
ANYWAY, my conclusion is, I don’t necessarily think ACD had any type of explicitly romantic involvement with men during his life (there’s honestly no way to tell unless there are some top secret letters floating around out there somewhere), but he DID have some very close relationships with men throughout his life that occasionally made me raise an eyebrow when reading his letters and journals. He also liked to comment on how good soldiers looked. I think regardless of what he actually DID in his life, an attraction to men seems obvious to me in his writing. Your mileage may vary.
As far as Holmes goes, I undeniably think Holmes was gay in the stories, and Watson was bisexual (not the terms that would have been used at the time, but what we would currently recognize as bi people and exclusively gay people did absolutely exist at the time, regardless of what straight historians would have you believe). The fact that Holmes is written as a bachelor, straddling the line between law and crime himself (solving crimes but also willing to break a few laws, more interested in justice than in the letter of the law), his skill with makeup and disguise, his lack of interest in many arbitrary social norms… all of these were common methods of queer-coding in the literature of the time. In addition, several of the Holmes stories reference queer landmarks and events, enough times to make me think it wasn’t accidental (in uh… FINA I think, Holmes has an incident on Vere Street, which was the site of a famous molly house bust in 1810, and I’m sure you’ve seen references to the Criterion being a gay meeting spot, and there are plenty more).
The army also had associations with gay prostitution, so a down-on-his luck soldier in need of some money and a place to stay meeting a friend at the Criterion who can introduce him to an unconventional bloke… it’s uh, got some subtext to it. And it was super common for men who were interested in men to also marry at some point or another. It was less common for a guy to live with another man for years, then get married, then move back in with that same dude for several more years. I’m just saying. If anyone tries to tell you Watson was straight, they’re not to be trusted.
TL;DR: ACD may or may not have been queer, and unless we find some revealing letters or we chat with him via seance, we’ll never know. But Holmes and Watson? 100% queer.

Do you know what this is? This is The Heart from Auschwitz.
An act of defiance. A statement of hope. A crime punishable by death.
On December 12, 1944, locked inside Auschwitz, Polish teenager Fania turned twenty. After spending a year in a concentration camp, Fania didn’t expect her birthday to even be remembered - but her best friend, Zlatka, risked everything to make her a birthday present, a paper heart.
Simply making the heart - or carrying it - could get either of them killed.
The heart was signed by many of their friends, bearing notes in Polish, German, French, and Hebrew that announced "When you get old, put your glasses on your nose, take this album in your hand and read my signature again,“ and “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!” It was an act of great sacrifice and love for a friend.
Less than 40 days later, they began the Death March from Auschwitz to Ravensbruck, and from Ravensbruck to freedom. Fania carried the heart under her arm the whole time. And survived.
Fania donated the heart to the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Center in 1988, where it is a featured piece of their exhibit. You can read more about the story of Fania and Zlatka Meg Wiviott’s Paper Hearts, coming September 2015.

Short comic, while I work on something bigger on the side. It is nevertheless a very important topic. A lot of seabirds die because they eat plastic. They feed their chicks with the waste. It’s really tragic.

Very sound reasoning!
Hey, Steph, significant question struck me - Say, BBC Sherlock officially announces Season 5. BUT -- it continues with S4's quality - quality of writing, plotting, characterization, and same amount quote-unquote 'Johnlocking', again under Steven & Mark's sole vision, & that this will be ONLY way Sherlock S5 and future seasons will continue on. After everything, should TJLC shippers continue to support the show?
Hi Nonny! *hugs*
Okay, I’m just going to state right here before I answer this question, is that this is my opinion and mine alone, and y’all can take it or leave it.
That said: it’s not my place or authority to tell people what they should or shouldn’t enjoy. Just like I can judge people for their opinions or theories that make no sense to me, it’s my problem to deal with and we’re all entitled to our own opinions about the series.
PERSONALLY, if the show continues on the way it is with S4 being true, well, I think it’s a huge mistake for them, but I’m not the showrunner or writer, so I don’t have a say. I can come back to fandom for that. And that segues into this: it’s up to the individual johnlocker to decide if they want to continue to speculate on the series or not, if they want to hold out hope or not, if they want to “believe” or not. I know that I won’t really be speculating as hard anymore, because S4 makes no sense to the rest of the series, and for me it seemed too fake. If they continued in the vein of “S4 was real” another 5 years down the line, well… I don’t think I’ll have any hope of it becoming canon in the BBC verse. They’ll put the little easter eggs and stuff in it, and continue baiting I’m sure, but honestly, I think, if S5 ever happens and isn’t “proven fake”, we should move on and just enjoy what we have with our amazing fandom creators.
But like I said, it’s not my place to say yes or no. If you want to continue, have at it! It is very fun to speculate and theorize. Just try to keep realistic and see things from both perspectives. I’ve found since I’ve done that, it’s been easier to keep my head grounded in the reality of things. I’m not going to pretend I also wasn’t one of the people who got overexcited over every little thing… but since I’ve stepped back, I realize that I can have fun, but keeping my mind open to all possibilities helps keep my mental health be in a better place while still having fun and being open to all theories for the series. I don’t agree with a lot of them, but it’s not my place to police fandom. It’s NO ONE’S place to gatekeep your enjoyment of something.
Do what you want to do Nonny, I’m not – nor anyone should – going to condemn you either way. <3

FTH 2020 Signups Now Open!
The hour has struck! Signups are open from now until the end of the day on January 31st. (any timezone; we’re not super picky.)
There are a few things we want to call your attention to, before you plunge in:
1) Our list of supported nonprofits includes some of the same organizations as last year, as well as several new ones. (A couple of last year’s orgs grew enough to shoot past our $10 million-a-year ceiling, which is actually pretty awesome for them.) It’s also possible for creators to select one additional nonprofit where their bidders can send donations; if you’re thinking of pursuing this course, please be sure to read our policy on donations to outside organizations.
2) As part of an effort to boost fan labor, we’re piloting a project called the Regiment of Fan Laborers (ROFL.) You can read all the details here, but we want to highlight two things:
Anyone who signs up for fan labor will be given the option to sign on for the ROFL
Anyone who signs up as a writer will be eligible to partner with someone from the ROFL for help and support with their FTH fic. We can’t guarantee there will be someone in the ROFL who meets your exact needs, though, so feel free to bid on individual labor auctions if you know what you’re looking for.
3) Though we still aren’t including tangible fancrafts as part of the auction (we explain why in our FAQ,) this year we will have a Fan Crafts Bazaar. The full details and a signup will be up soon!
4) Lastly, because of some updates we’ve made to the signup form regarding how fandoms are classified, the signup form is now, technically, 54 pages long. But don’t worry! You won’t see 54 pages. That number includes pages for every single subfandom menu. Nobody is going to see more than about seven or eight screens, even if all three of your fandoms break down into separate subfandoms. We’re mentioning this only because we don’t want anyone to flip out when they see “page 1 of 54″ in the bottom right corner (which would be a reasonable reaction.)
Click here to sign up to offer a fanwork for Fandom Trumps Hate 2020.
