360° convention pictures and movies comming up...
Boys and there toys…
Guilty…!
Yes I’m human too, and as a web developer I read blog about what’s hot in web development in 2018. And guess what… 360° images are making their way up…
360 degrees cameras have to fisheye lenses and automatically stitch the images together so you get a real 360 view of the place where you took the pictures. Good quality 360 cameras are getting affordable and easy to use. So your truly ordered one online 🙂
And now for the good news… I will take it with me to the centennial convention in Chicago and will take 360° pictures in the convention hall, plenary, the parade, etc., etc… So, stay tuned for some really nice 360 experiences on the SMiLE Blog and Facebook page.
The picture below is taken during the District 112a convention during voting…
Post from RICOH THETA. - Spherical Image - RICOH THETA
Nowadays it’s even possible to have 360° video and post them to YouTube. YouTube fully supports this kind of videos by adding navigation controls to view 360° videos. 360° videos are low quality.
The video on the right was shot during a multiple Lions Club inclusion event for people with disabilities, their compnions, families and  friends.

Google Trips
Flying to Chicago soon?
Check out Google Trips. Google Trips is an app for Android an iPhone that helps you plan your trips. Scary but useful… After downloading the app, Google Trips scanned all my emails and filtered out all bookings for Rental cars, Flights and Hotels. I automatically made trips for all past and future trips.
Try it and be amazed or fear it and leave it be…

The power of hashtags
Make Instagram work for you and your club!
To demonstrate the power of hashtags consider the next case:
Your Multiple district organizes a big tree planting day as part of one of the centennial environmental goals. To show the world Lions are involved with the environment, a public relations campaign is set up. One of the ideas is to show pictures from Lions planting trees all over the multiple district and you are responsible for publishing all pictures online…
Choose your scenario…
Tumblr media
  SCENARIO I
You set up a communication to all Lions in the multiple district to ask them to take pictures during the event.
You instruct Lions to send the pictures to your personal email account.
You get emails saying the attachments where stripped because of the size. You reply with a request to send the pictures with Wetransfer. You get an email requesting help using WeTransfer…
You get another batch of images with poor resolution. You reply requesting the original images. You get an email requesting help getting the original images from their camera…
You do not get pictures from several districts. You start mailing around asking for someone that took pictures and request to send them to You.
You are missing information about the origin (district) of the pictures. You start replying emails to get the information.
You start uploading the pictures and get an ‘Image too large’ error message.
You start resizing all pictures received to a proper format.
You start receiving mails asking why everything is taking so long…
You which you never volunteered for this job…
Next time…
You start all over again
There will not be a next time…
SCENARIO II
You set up a communication to all Lions in the multiple district to ask them to take pictures during the event.
You instruct Lions to use Instagram and the event hashtag #lionstreeplanting. You add a link to the SMiLE article Start using Instagram today
You add a link on your event webpage to https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/lionstreeplanting/ and see ALL*** Instagram pictures with #lionstreeplanting
You don’t need to do anything else!!!!
Next time…
Just send out a new event hashtag
We choose Instagram an the hashtag! You???
Tumblr media
*** Since the project https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/lionstreeplanting/ is fictional it will have no posts, but look at https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/lionsclubselfie/ to see how SMiLE is collection Lions selfies from all over the world just by introducing the #lionsclubselfie hashtag!

Mundaneum - A piece of pre-internet history
Mundaneum – Mons, Belgium
Recently I was at the Google Belgium offices in Brussels for a certification class and noticed a piece of what seemed to be an old archive closet. It turned out that it was part of a Belgian project from 1895 aimed to collect and store information from all over the world with more than 12 million index cards and documents: The “Mundaneam” project Read on and be amazed…
The web time forgot
New York Times
Some consider it a forerunner of the Internet (or, perhaps more appropriately, of systematic knowledge projects such as Wikipedia etc…) The inventor himself had dreams that one day, somehow, all the information he collected could be accessed by people from the comfort of their own homes. Ultimately, this project was never realised as the Mundaneum project soon faced the scale of the technical development of its era.
Watch this video and be amazed!

In 2012 Google announced forming a partnership with the museum in Mons, Belgium, dedicated to a long-ago venture to compile and index knowledge in a giant, library-style card catalog with millions of entries — an analog-era equivalent of a search engine or Wikipedia.

Come …

Originell webbsida: http://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/ultimate-guide-social-media-image-dimensions-infographic#sm.000jdcj9r65mcol11ag2ki26ivgew
Infografik (bild): https://socialmediaweek.org/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/hubspot-social-image-size-guide.jpg

A new style to your club website or social media page?!
Changing banner image occasionally helps keep your site interesting . It is also a good way to align with the current main activity of the club or the centenary theme of lions.
Once you have chosen your preferred picture , the hard part begins …

The challenge
How to …
avoid a distorted image?
keep all main image parts in view, once uploaded?
judge, whether the image will fit for Twitter too?
get a perfect look?
At this point it is very helpful to know, which image dimensions each service uses for all the different images supported: Profile image, banner image, event image, post image, etc.
But wait a minute … every once in a while social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. change these dimensions a bit – leading to the above outlined “problems” and challenges.

SMiLE is your friend …
SMiLE team members have the same challenges and questions while maintaining our sites or the sites each of us maintains for our clubs or districts.
So we share some resources with you, which really help to stay up to date with all the image dimensions. This way, you do not have to scribble them down or memorize them. Just bookmark this SMiLE blog post 🙂
You will find tons of web pages on the internet, which talk about this topic. Here are the sources we find most helpful:
A great big infographic covering all major social media channels:

Second infographic about social media image sizes, slightly different approach: http://www.mainstreethost.com/blog/social-media-image-size-cheat-sheet/
About Facebook Event Cover images:
This seems to be a bit of a secret, but finally we found information about that as well … Two resources reported this dimension: 784 px wide by 295 px tall (http://webmarketingtherapy.com/blog/social-media-cover-photo-sizes-for-2016/)
Here you find some extra Facebook image dimensions, typically not mentioned in other sources! http://www.dreamgrow.com/facebook-cheat-sheet-sizes-and-dimensions/
Equipped with these cheat sheets, social media admins’ life gets much easier 🙂
But we have one more great thing to share with you …

Tools to create perfect sized social media banners
To speed up the work to compose a perfectly fitting social media banner or post image, using the right tool can help a lot!
One of the internet resources listed above provides Photoshop templates for various social media platforms. For those of you, who work a lot with Photoshop, that might be a good way for you.
In case you like it easy yet powerful and good looking, the SMiLE team recommends Canva, a tool we use quite a lot for this task.
Canva is an online service (www.canva.com) you can use simply with your browser, or you use the nice Canva iPad App! We highly recommend it.
