What are the risks of teeth whitening?

The risks associated with teeth whitening are relatively minor. The two primary negative side effects are an increased sensitivity of the teeth to hot and cold temperatures and irritation of the gums. For most people, these symptoms are minor and temporary and can be reduced or eliminated altogether either by decreasing the concentration of bleaching gel they are using, by decreasing the amount of time they bleach their teeth, or both.

If your teeth are already sensitive, or if you tend to experience this problem when your teeth are cleaned, it is likely that you will also experience the problem when you bleach your teeth. If this problem is not solved by reducing the concentration or time of bleaching, then it may be necessary to use a product designed to desensitize teeth, such as potassium nitrate or fluoride. These ingredients are commonly found in toothpastes designed for people with sensitive teeth.

Irritation of the gums is caused by exposure to the bleaching agent. The higher the concentration of the bleaching agent, the more likely it will cause irritation. To prevent exposure of the gums to the bleach, it is best to use a tray that is custom designed for your mouth. The tray should hold the bleach against each entire tooth, while preventing it from coming in contact with your gums. It is also a good idea to remove any of the bleaching agent that comes out of the tray and into contact with your gums when the tray is first placed in your mouth.

Another concern to keep in mind is the possibility of enamel damage from teeth bleaching. This problem is uncommon but it has occurred, when a high strength concentration of whitener was used, or an acidic pre-rinse or whitener was used. In order to prevent these problems, it is best to use tray bleaching as recommended by your dentist or the manufacturer of a reputable bleaching kit.

Finally, there are some people who should not whiten their teeth without considering certain factors. If you have severe internal discoloration, such as from tetracycline discoloration or damage to a tooth, you probably will not be successful using conventional at home tray bleaching. Some dentists are now showing success treating these conditions with laser bleaching, so it would likely be best to consult with a dentist if you have problems like these. Also, keep in mind that bleaching will not work on artificial dental work. In cases like these, if you bleach your teeth, they will be one shade while your dental work will remain the previous shade.
