@literatureladies mission 04 : antagonists
the empress’s beauty did not require the soft fullness of young lips, the rosy red of young cheeks, the tenderness of young skin. this beauty cut deep, like a sharpened crystal. this beauty was immortal.

it’s sort of a shame that people rarely pay attention to self-published SFF, because there are some really nice ones out there? Thinking about the Sword of Kaigen especially, but there are more and their popularity often relies on reader-to-reader recommendation.
Anyway, read The Sword of Kaigen
Japanese inspired setting
it’s a military fantasy, but focuses on the narratives about war rather than a bigger conflict. There are action scenes and duels, but the book is more focused on character studies than on the classic hero tale
it has nuanced and complex family dynamics
there’s elemental magic
the main character is a housewife (with…a sword hidden in her kitchen’s floor). Misaki is one of the best and most complex female characters I’ve read about and her characterisation is just GOOD
it deals with themes of regret and memory
in general, it’s an exploration of humanity and the characters’ arc shows a steady growth throughout the book
it explores propaganda and state-run news outlets as a means to influence public opinion
