Tears of the Knight

i decided to post fanfics on here because i've been writing for fun. anyways i wrote this before i beat totk

CW: angst, very little comfort, mourning(?), crying, ooc Link(?)

MASSIVE TOTK SPOILERS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Link stands at the center of the Rist Peninsula. Silent Princesses surround him. He looks up into the sky and gazes upon the Light Dragon with newfound knowledge of Zelda’s fate. Unsure of what to do with himself, he begins the short walk home. The walk back to his house isn’t long lived but to him it felt like an eternity. As he closes the front door behind him, he slumps against it.

He looks down at his hands, they’re shaking in a way he never noticed before. His face starts to burn as a tear falls onto his palm. Then another, and then another as tears flow incessantly out of his eyes. The more he tries to wipe them away, the more they flow down his face, as if they were taunting him. His mind flashes back to the vision he saw. The actions of Zelda replaying in his head over and over. The face she was making was so painful, she sacrificed so much just to ensure he could reunite with the Master Sword. Link feels chest tighten as he falls to his knees, weak sobs escape his mouth. His lungs feel restricted as he gasps for air; no matter how much he breathes in, it doesn’t seem to take.

A hurricane of emotions swirl inside him; anger, grief, melancholy, but the strongest feeling of all was guilt. He failed to protect the one person he was meant to. Zelda will never return to the way she was. He has failed as a knight. He’s failed her father. He’s failed the kingdom. But most of all he’s failed her. Link lets out a shaky breath in an effort to get himself to calm down. He pictures the times they shared together after sealing the calamity. The walks they took together, the peace and safety they established in a ruined Hyrule; the meals they shared. Part of him wished he treasured that time more. If by some miracle he could see her smile just once more.

But its too late for that now. Nothing will change if he just sits here feeling sorry for himself and drowning in his own regrets. Zelda gave up everything to give him this chance to defeat the Demon King. Now he has to do it, if not for her then for Hyrule. Link stands up, his face is still red, his cheeks and eyes itch from crying so much.

Even if he can’t save her, he can save everyone she wanted to protect. The thought of that calms his heart. He exits his house with a newfound resolve to defeat the Demon King and save Hyrule. Link spots the Light Dragon in the sky above him. He feels as if the dragon is watching over him, as if to say “Please return safely”. He knows the dragon can't hear him, but he speaks anyway, “I’ll save you. Just wait for me, Zelda.”
