“I already said I’m not looking to stay, just wanted to get some supplies. I was told I wasn’t obligated to stick around if I didn’t want to. ”
Ander knew better then to stick around humans for to long. Other humans were just as bad as the infected, if not worse. They were greedy and fearful, anything to save their own hide. Push a friend into a swarm, even a family member, just to by themselves a moment or two to escape. She’d seen it before.
“ So I’ll take some clean water, what dried food you can spare and be on my way. ”
A small shifting movement can be seen from the front pocket of her worn black hoodie.
Whitney wasn’t suppose to let anyone in. Anyone.
But, alas, she was just a child and she was always taught to help people... in her own special way.
“We don’t gots lotsa stuffs,” she said, sitting patiently on the stairs, peering down from the loft, while she watched the lady with the cool hair strode through their tiny home.
Her eyes moved to the pocket that jiggled, and instantly her head cocked to one side since guns didn’t move, and knives didn’t either.
“What’s that?”

Lucia:
“Let me talk to Poppa… and you can’t ask him that conversation is between me and him,” she said softly fearful if Whitney asked that Sidney might just give in and not think about the consequences. Keeping a hold of her hand Lucia led her daughter outside stopping as she spotted the wagon. There was a ray of sunshine that just made it look that much more spectacular than it was. “Open your eyes princesa,” she said softly kneeling down and waiting for her reaction.
Whitney walked beside Lucia, their fingers intertwined while they did so. The little girl swung their hands slightly. Her eyes were shut and her trust was souly on Lucia. “What is it Momma?” she jittered completely abandoning the sleep that laid heavy on her just a few moments before. And then, before her, was a wagon, almost new, ready to go.
“For me?” she gasped, turning to smile at her mother for a few seconds. Everything about her sparkled for a few moments before she ran over and ran her fingers over the paint, “so I can go everywhere with you and poppa?”

Momma:
“No baby it’s not a puppy,” she said with a small laugh holding her hand and smiling. There was no way that they could possibly have a puppy at the same time right now. It was to dangerout actually. “Close your eyes… okay… I want to surprise you,” she said excited to show her daughter what she found for her. She was surprised that Whitney never asked why she wasn’t carrying the buckets with her. “Are you eye closed,” she asked stopping at the door and waiting.
“Awww...” she whined, her shoulders slouching with a huff at the mention of it not being a puppy. She really wanted a puppy. Zoe had DogMeat, so there had to be puppies somewhere.... but alas there was still a surprise waiting for her. So her hand squeezed Lucia’s, and her free hand covered her already squinting eyes. “I’m ready!” She cheered. While she waited, she jittered on the tips of her toes back and forth excited for what it could be.

“It’s about an hour walk,” she said with a smile biting her lower lip knowing that she was going to make the walk fun as she was going to be read to and the wagon to help with the load of the water. “You did princesa you look so pretty! You make my heart beat a little faster just for you,” she said with a giggle and a small smile, “Are you ready I promise you can eat along the way.”
“M’kay..” she sighed, nodding. There was no way of getting out of this walk. It was going to be nice to get out and stretch her legs a little bit and to get some fresh air and maybe see some cool things and fight some monsters. Snack first though. “What’s my surprise?” she asked batting her eyelashes up at her momma, “is it a puppy?!” She asked, grasping Lucia’s hand with both of her own.

Lucia:
“I got some peanut butter and crackers all ready for you, wanna eat while we go or should we wait here,” she asked tilting her head to the side. Looking the girl over Lucia made a mental note that she needed to get clothes the next time she got to go out alone. A wagon though useful wasn’t what was necessary. “We can do which ever you’d like to do,” she nodded hoping that she was being encouraging and not demanding.
Whitney bit her lip knowing that Lucia wanted to leave before it got too much later in the day. They’d only been out once together before and that was only for a short walk to collect some tomatoes. “Are we goin’ far?” she asked softly, moving to put her hand in her momma’s, “’n I brushed my hairs all by myself, see?”

sevenorton:
Trying to quietly climb out of the bed, he looked down at himself, tightening his belt only to her a small voice behind him. Looking over his shoulder he looked at the tiny girl, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes as she begged him to take her with him.. He took a deep breath as he thought about it, figuring she wouldn’t leave him alone if he said no.. So turning himself around, he bent down only to pick her up and carry her out the room, so that they wouldn’t disturb Lucia who was still sleeping.. “Well…” he mumbled and looked at her.. “Okay… We can go out…”
Whitney smiled weakly, moving to pull herself out of bed while he got himself ready. She didn’t have a lot of clothes yet, just what they’d found in neighboring houses. Most of these things were odd and end items, some boy’s pants that didn’t quite fit her right, some shirts from girls that were too big, shoes that were, too small... but she made it work. So, she pulled out her clothes and quietly changed as to not disturb Momma -- and just to make it so she wasn’t mad, she brushed her hair.
“Really?” she beamed as he picked her up, yawning and tucking her head on his shoulder while obviously still sleepy, “are we gonna go fight monsters?”

The sun was just starting to rise when Sidney rose from the bed. Whitney, who had stirred with him, rose as well, rubbing her sleepy eyes while she sat up in the bed with a messy mop of hair on top of her head. “Can I come?” she asked softly not to wake Momma, “please?”

Momma
“Mmm probably before dark… that when he always comes home,” she said running a brush through her own hair before laughing at the sight of her daughter. “Hair brush… and then get dressed out I’m going to get set everything up okay.. and you better brush your hair little girl,” she said with a small laugh as she wiggled her finger playfully putting her boots on and heading to the kitchen to get the buckets that they used for water.
Whitney sighed, she hated brushing her hair. “M’kay,” she sighed, moving to take the brush from the woman. Then, she slowly got ready, Lucia really wanted her to read, but she didn’t know how. She was stressed. But, after a few more moments she came out of the room and down to the kitchen quietly.
“I’m ready, Momma, can we have a snack first?”

Momma:
“You have to get up baby, I’m not going to spoil my surprise for you,” she said with a softly laugh. Knowing that the little girl was desperately trying to get them stuck in bed. “Come on lets get up. Momma wants you to read her a story while we work okay,” she smiled moving the small leg and getting out of the bed. They next thing on Lucia’s list was to get Whitney an outfit, she was in a desperate need for one and it was her job as a mother to provide. “Come on Princesa it’s time to get up.. sooner we do our chores sooner we get to snuggle in bed again and have Poppa come home.”
The little girl yawned and tried to hold onto the woman for as long as she could until she was left alone in the bed. Only then did she sit up and rub her eyes with the heels of her hands. Per usual, her hair was messy on her head and the duvet and bed were both a little too big for just her -- so she climbed out after her mother. Her little legs bare and stuck out like twigs under out the oversized sweatshirt that hung at her knees. “When’s Poppa comin’ home?” she asked sleepily, trotting over with bare feet to the woman.

Momma:
“Few more minutes and nope.. it’s been warmer but we can take a blanket if you want us to,” she said with a small smile kissing around the girls face and holding her close.“I got a book from the library want to read to me as we go get the water, I think you’re gonna like the surprise that I got you,” she nodded running her fingers through the little one’s hair and rubbing her back.
Back rubs were one of her favorite things -- those and bubbles. For a few more moments before answering, her breathing evened it’s way back out and her eyes disappeared again. “What kinda’ surprise?” she asked softly, wrapping her leg loosely over Lucia’s. Reading was her biggest vice. It was something she wished she could do that nobody had taken the time to teach her. The stories in her head were just from the pictures.. and she hoped that if she didn’t bring it up maybe the book would be forgotten until she could figure it out herself.

Sidney:
Looking down at her as she sat besides him he watched her up until she asked what he knew what her name was.. He smiled for a moment, “Hm.. Let’s see if i can remember… Hm… Princess Ariel was it?” he asked with a slight smile as he leaned forward so that he was on the same level as her.
Whitney immediately cracked the biggest, toothy grin she may have ever cracked. Nobody had ever called her a princess, unless they were playing pretend, at least that she could remember. “No!” She giggled, her hands covering her mouth while she laughed, “I’m Whitney! Ariel has red hair!”

Sidney:
Looking at him, he pretended like he got surprised by her saying she’d been little once. “Really?” he said wit a slight smile before he continued listening to the young girl talking about not remembering her birthday. “That´s okay… Dates can be difficult to remember… I’m not good at remembering things either..”
He didn’t remember things either, it was okay! Nervously, she looked up at him, still obviously embarrassed that she didn’t know something as little as when her birthday was. Birthdays weren’t important anymore, at least that’s what she’d heard people say before she was alone. “What’s my name then?” she asked, biting her lip and looking up at him under those long, dark lashes with a look of endearment. Quietly, she tested him, to see if he remembered.

Lucia
“We have to help your papa,” she said softly kissing the girls nose gently. “And then after we get water we can come back home and get back in bed… and spend the rest of the day here,” she said trying to compromise with the girl. She might have been older but Whitney acted far younger and Lucia rather enjoyed it. “Maybe we can even convince him when he gets home that all three us will stay home in bed tomorrow… wouldn’t you like that,” she asked softly playing with the other hair trying to slowly wake her up even more, “Besides… I found something the other day you might like.”
Poppa.
She had a special place in her heart for Poppa. The memories from her life before all of this were slim to none but a lot of the older kids had stories about their families, and so did her brothers before.... well, before they went missing. Whitney, however had no such memories. Lucia and Sidney were her family, she’d come to call the momma and poppa, she snuggled with them at night, the provided for her. So, when Poppa was brought into the mix, her little eyes fluttered open for a brief moment. “A few more minutes?” she asked, pulling herself in closer, “is it gonna be cold today?”

Lucia:
“Of course princesa,” she whispered softly running her fingers through the others hair. It had taken a while and much convincing from Lucia so she could brush Whitney’s hair and now it was daily thing that happened. Opening one of her eyes Lucia smiled pressing kisses along the others forehead lightly knowing that they needed to get up, it wasn’t fair that Sidney did almost all the work and they were running low on water. “Want to get water today,” she asked softly before kissing around her daughters face again.
Whitney hadnt even opened her eyes yet. She was still a kid, playing in a dream land of climbing on rooftops and picking flowers in spring. The scent of Lucia, the woman that she’d grown to love and adore, hung heavy in her memory while she snuggled up against her, a tiny arm pulling herself in tightly.
All she could do though was offer a small squeak was all she could offer in response to the question. Her breathing remained even and her eyelashes just slightly fluttered, then, they slowly opened. “Can we jus’ stay ‘ere today?” she asked yawning then allowing her eyes to shut. “I’m sleepy.”

misslucia:
Whitney had been with them for… about two weeks if Lucia had to really guess but time wasn’t something that she was all that good with. And it was like she fit in almost perfectly with the two of them. The house was a little small for the three of them bit Lucia liked it, she enjoyed waking up and knowing where both Sidney and Whitney were. Whimpering softly the young woman pulled the child closer to her her free and feeling the cold from Sidney’s side. He must have left to go check his traps or something. Since Whitney hadn’t moved the Cuban knew that she had a little while longer just to lay in bed and cuddle with her child.
She was a tired kid and slept a lot, though, since she’d been getting a bit more nutrition with Lucia than she had prior, Whitney hadn’t been sleeping as much and had just a little bit more energy. However, when she slept, she slept very well, especially nuzzled between the warmth of Lucia and Sidney. Whitney always stirred if one of her pseudo-parents rose before she did, but never for long. Today she rolled over into Lucia’s arms and basked in the warmth there with a few small incoherent noises. “Five mo’ minutes, momma?” she asked, not even thinking about what was coming out of her mouth while nuzzling into the woman’s neck.

Lucia:
“You don’t have to protect me little one… it’s my job to protect you,” she smiled nodding her head and grabbing another mushroom to start cutting the new one. “They do look like little mushrooms… how about we make mushroom soup for dinner and since it’s still light out we can even go look for some other stuff to add to it too,” she asked as they cut the vegetable.
Whitney smiled, giggling a little bit while they sliced the mushroom into much smaller mushrooms together. When the door opened, she jumped, immediately letting go of Lucia when footsteps and a man’s voice came through the hallway and into the kitchen. That must’ve been Sidney, who looked just as confused as she was about him being here. After being told to wait, slowly she lowered herself to sit in the chair so Lucia and him could talk it out in the other room.
After a few moments they came back, Sidney ushering her over to the table to sit. Slowly, she moved to follow him, taking her seat, and so they began while Lucia finished dinner without her.

Lucia:
“Nope it doesn’t hurt the mushrooms or well I don’t think it does,” she said with a small smile, kissing her temple again, “I’ll protect you from everything now.” Nodding her head she started slowly moving the mushroom cap towards the and slowly cutting it up. “Should we make cubes or do you want to leave it how it in the slivers,” she asked tilting her head to the side.
Whitney smiled, she was loving this. Everything she had wanted was happening right in this moment. Someone was going to love her and take care of her. “I’ll protect you, too,” she nodded, smiling while they sliced up the knife. “I like the slices, they look like lil’ mushrooms!” she giggled, turning to look at Lucia with a smile on her face.
