Background: Daughter of Prosecutor Byrne Faraday, Kay lost her mother at a young age, and was raised by her father alone, with help from Detective Tyrell Badd, a friend of her father’s. Even though Byrne was usually busy with his job, he cared a lot about his daughter, giving her a Promise Notebook with promises for her to try and keep and always buying her Swiss rolls from the courtroom vending machine.

When Kay was 10, her father was murdered in courthouse during a recess, while Kay was dutifully waiting for her father. It was during this time that she met Gumshoe and Edgeworth for the first time, sharing Swiss rolls with the former and giving the latter her Promise Notebook. 

With no other relatives around, Kay moved away from Los Angeles to live with her maternal granparents, only coming back sever years later, after finding her father’s diary, which proved that he was actually the legendary Great Thief Yatagarasu, sparking in Kay the desire to bring his murdered and the smuggling ring he was trying to stop to justice.

Another thing her father left her was Little Thief, a device used to create simulations of crime scenes by entering various data such as police reports, testimonies, etc.

Back at Los Angeles, she meets Miles Edgeworth and Detective Dick Gumshoe again, and works with them in uncovering the smuggling ring her father was investigating and got him killed.

Not long after, after helping Edgeworth solve more cases, she was framed for the murder of defense attorney Jill Crane, and since a fall had left her temporarily amnesiac (she regained her memories after seeing the Promise Book her father had left her), she believed she had truly killed the woman, and was wrecked with guilt when Edgeworth gave up his prosecutor badge rather than give up on her, but was quick to spring back on her feet once she regained her memories.

After Edgeworth regained his prosecutor badge, Kay decided to leave her dream to form a new Yatagarasu behind (saying she already formed a trio with Edgeworth and Gumshoe) and find another way to honor her father’s memory, eventually deciding to become a detective.

Headcanons

While she has a preference for Swiss Rolls (especially those sold at the courthouse vending machine), Kay is generally a sweet tooth and loves all type of sweet.

She doesn’t like peppermint and licorice, though. God forbid you offer her any...

Tinkering with the Little Thief made her pretty good with computers and electronics in general, since she learned how to operate it by herself through trial and errors. 

Adult!Kay, whether she works as a detective or a private eye, wears a mid-thigh trenchcoat and a fedora (with her old Yatagarasu brooch pinned on it) and styles her hair in a long braid.

In the Private Eye Verse, even though, as a private detective she works with defense attorneys, she won’t hesitate passing info to Edgeworth if she thinks it’s important.
