Reboot
The ponies were standing out on the front porch, feeling the heat off the bricks from the late summer sunshine.
“So what’s next for us?”
Starlight Glimmer didn’t answer - instead she pushed a tattered newspaper ad over to her pink-and-yellow friend.
“Not this again,” Fluttershy sighed. “This was ages ago. All those ponies are long gone.”
Starlight Glimmer turned to look down the road. “Long gone WEST!” she insisted. “Long gone on ADVENTURES.”
“They all disappeared, Glim. They never came back.”
“What’s this?” Another pony, yellow and pink like Fluttershy, peeked over at the newspaper ad.  “Who disappeared?”
“It’s an old story,” said Flutter. “A long time ago, a pony named Sweetberry started up a package delivery service, the Little Pony Express. Toy ponies who weren’t being played with could sign up to work, taking letters and packages...:”
“Anywhere in the WORLD,” interrupted Glimmer.
“Well, anywhere in Durham,” Flutter gently corrected her.
“No, they went further - all the way across the country! That’s when they disappeared,” whispered Glimmer excitedly. “I am going to join. I am going to TRAVEL. I am going to…”
“That’s crazy, Glim. You’re too small, for one thing. We’re mini ponies.”
“Not that one,” said the second yellow horse, pointing over at an enormous purple pony with wings, a unicorn horn, and a dolphin’s tail. Its eyes were huge, like an insect’s eyes.
“Is that a pony?” whispered Fluttershy. “I’ve never really been sure.”
“Some kind of pony, I guess,” Glimmer flicked her blue and purple tail. A tiny bud of a horn was growing on her own head, right in the center. Her lavender coat sparkled in the light.
“Hey, what’s your name?” The yellow pony gave the huge purple creature a friendly poke.
“You couldn’t pronounce it,” the creature laughed. “What’s yours?”
“Ja-Ru.”
“That’s not your name,” Fluttershy laughed. “That’s your brand, silly.”
Ja-Ru looked confused, and lifted her foot to show the name blazed on the bottom of her hoof.
“It’s ok,” said Glimmer. “They take any breed of pony. Any brand. Any SIZE,” she added, looking meaningfully at Flutter.
The other yellow horse looked over her own shoulder at her haunch.  Four stars marked her hip, vivid pink like her mane and tail.  She had an unusually sensible expression for a toy pony, with fierce, intelligent eyes. In spite of her tiny size, her neck and legs looked strong.
“Estrella,” she said. “That’s my name.”
“I’m Starlight Glimmer,” said the little purple pony. “And this is my friend, Fluttershy.”
“Starlight Glimmer?” said Estrella, sounding surprised. “Aren’t you - weren’t you - didn’t you used to be…”
Glimmer looked away and pawed at the ground in annoyance.  “That was a long time ago,” she said. “Ponies can change.”
Fluttershy nosed at Glimmer. “Friendship is magic,” she said. Glimmer shook her mane and nuzzled Flutter’s nose in return.
“So what about all this?” Estrella looked at the newspaper clipping. “Who is Sweetberry?”
“She was a toy pony, but she wasn’t wanted anymore.”  Estrella winced at this as Glimmer started up again. “So she started the Little Pony Express. She hired other ponies who used to be toys, and they made deliveries. They could take anything, anywhere. Letters. Presents. Cookies. ANYTHING.” She began to prance around the brick step.
“But they all disappeared,” Fluttershy added.  “They went all the way to Portland, but they never came back again. Most ponies believe they found a child who wanted them as toys again.”
“Or,” said Glimmer.
“It’s the most likely answer,” said Flutter.
“Or they went WILD,” said Glimmer. “They ran off into the mountains and they formed up a herd of wild ponies, maybe.”  She looked away down the street again, pawing at the ground restlessly.
“I don’t know about that,” Estrella said. “But it sounds like a good job.  Do you really think we could do it? Pull a wagon with a package?”
“I know we can,” said Glimmer, her wide eyes even wider. “I can pull. I can pull a… a sneaker. I could pull YOU!” She shoved playfully at the other two, pushing them sideways.
“What about you?” Fluttershy asked the strange purple winged giant, who was still waiting on the step with them.  It flipped its odd fish-tail.  “You could pull a wagon... OR a boat.”
“No,” the creature answered cheerfully. “Thank you, but no. I am not from this place. When the moons of Jupiter are in alignment, my people will come back for me. I am trying to contact them, but I need to find a radio tower.” She was scanning the horizon, looking out over the tops of the trees. The other ponies looked skeptical.
“Is she saying she’s from another planet?” Flutter whispered.
“Well, that would explain a lot,” Estrella shrugged. “If you change your mind,” she said to the ponicorn-fishasus, “you will know where to find us.” She handed the newspaper clipping to the strange creature and turned back to the others.
“Is it decided, then?” said Fluttershy.
“We’ll go together,” Estrella said.
“It’s going to be hard work,” said Fluttershy.
“Together!” Glimmer cried happily. “Adventures await!”
“It will be dangerous,” said Fluttershy, bending her neck thoughtfully.
“I think we can do this,” Estrella said quietly. “I think we are strong enough.”
Fluttershy looked fondly at her old friend, the color of twilight and secrets, and her new friend, a golden reflection of herself, but with stars like Glimmer’s instead of Flutter’s butterfly marks. What did that mean? What destinies were branded on their haunches? She shrugged and laughed. “Friendship is magic,” she said.

Home on the Range
This weekend, Sweetberry felt like she needed to get back to her roots. Back to the farm. Back before the hair dye and the haunch tattoo.
Sweetberry is still in the Shawnee stable, with plans to travel soon. However, should Sweetberry's home station need her home instead, that could be easily arranged.
