Note
you are so real for being uncomfortable with hiruzen and orochimaru's relationship
THANK YOU
Like if we're being truthful, we don't get to see much of what Hiruzen's relationship with the Sannin, but what little we do get isn't good.
He gives a speech about Orochimaru having malice as a child, but presents no actual evidence of this. At the same time he praises Orochimaru's intellect to the point that he causes Jiraiya to view Oro as a rival. Rivalries are of course a theme in Naruto, but it's usually born of wanting to improve one's skills. With Oro and Jiraiya, its specifically that Jiraiya is envious of the praise Oro gets from Tsunade and Hiruzen. Tsunade's a kid, so she shouldn't get any blame here, but Hiruzen is old enough and experienced enough to see what's going on. The problem is that he wants them to be rivals.
Speaking of: when Kakashi did the bell test with Team 7, the goal was to teach them about teamwork. When Hiruzen did it with the Sannin, the lesson was much more literal and he had Orochimaru and Tsunade leave Jiraiya tied to a stump. Instead of teamwork, he's once again pitting them against each other.

Side note, he generally sucks as a teacher. We see Jiraiya learned a lot more from the toads than he did from Hiruzen, Tsunade's fighting style doesn't emulate his at all, and as mentioned he seems to give Orochimaru a little too much attention.
Going back to the stump scene, when he and Jiraiya are alone there's the "joke" of him wanting to do some peeping with Jiraiya. Who is 6. He wants to tag along and do some voyeurism with a 6 year old. Even Jiraiya can tell this is weird!

Calling back to an old post of mine: This official art probably isn't meant to be read into, but I can't help but think how it symbolizes that separation between the Sannin, enforced by Hiruzen
Tumblr media
Oh yeah and then we have this "endearing" moment:
Tumblr media
A lot of people find this moment heartwarming, reading it as "Hiruzen still loves Orochimaru despite them being evil" etc. Personally? I hate this. To me it reads as him rejecting any responsibility for how Orochimaru turned out. He ignores the angry adult they've become and mentally replaces them with a silent child.
To top it all off, Orochimaru went from being a quiet, introverted child to a twisted, manic adult who's perfectly fine with using then discarding people, including children. Could this behavior have come out of nowhere? I suppose so. But an outside influence seems a lot more likely.
Overall his relationship with all of the Sannin ranges from unhelpful to creepy, and he's definitely one of the biggest factors in all three of them turning into such broken adults.

a lot of orochimaru's behavioral patterns as an adult make a lot more sense if you, like me, think that hiruzen intentionally isolated them as a child because he thought they were dangerous. he openly states that he "always knew" they had the capacity for evil (which is bullshit, how the fuck would you know that from just looking at a child), and we see him continuously comparing jiraiya to orochimaru, almost as if he's trying to pit them against each other.
as an adult, orochimaru is overly independent, to the degree that they actively resent having to rely on kabuto when their arms are completely immobilized, and even in that state, take on multiple opponents at the same time by themself. they both do and don't trust the people around them; they trust that those people are dependent on the power they can offer them, not that they're actually on their side. they have the kind of casual approach to losing people that pretty clearly originates from an entire lifetime's worth of crushing, completely invisible isolation.
they had a team, and they had a teacher. they had peers and an entire village that was supposed to be their family. but at the end of the day, they never once genuinely connected with anyone. they never had the chance to. everyone was either too scared of them, too disgusted by them, too different from them, or hiruzen had actively discouraged them from talking to them. they grew up in a village where no one looked like them, no one talked like them, no one acted like them, and, as far as they knew, no one cared about them. it's a bit too easy to make a small child believe they're all alone in this world.

how much time does it usually take u to finish a drawing? 'finished' meaning .. u feel like the drawing is complete and u dont feel like it needs more work. and it WOULD technically be 'good enough' for u to post it (even if u dont actually do post it lol).

Village was founded around 60yrs before the start of Naruto (1st Databook, 2002). And the academy was founded by the 2nd Hokage 50yrs before the start of Naruto (1st Fanbook, 2002).
Hiruzen was 68 at the start of Naruto, so would have been 8 when Konoha was founded, and 18 when the Academy was founded. Hiruzen also graduated the academy at 12yrs old (1st Databook, 2002).
Kishi...make it make sense.
