Every time I think of what Veilguard could have been I look back to Tevinter Nights. A book from 2020 that had made me excited for what the game was going to be.
Solas being a force to be reckoned with. He can kill people in their dreams. He had his followers who killed themselves before being captured.
There were multiple interesting/returning monster ideas. Werewolves being back, the demon of regret that took the shape of Solas' paintings, the really fucked up shit Ghilan'nain was creating, whatever the hell was in Dorian's garden.
The dalish actually acted like dalish and were wary of humans. The Talon story mentions Zevran. The ben-hassrath struggling with the antaam.
It just still had the real Dragon Age charm to it.

Personally I wouldn't have been so mad at vg if it just had the balls to keep the story contained to the new parts.
Not brought back any previous companions except the base essentials. There was going to be no escaping having Solas in the Solas game and probably there was going to be at least one Dorian mention due to being in Tevinter. But if they didnt want to deal with any previous game romances or even just companion stories, then they shouldn't have brought back Morrigan and Isabela. (Honestly the Morrigan thing could be its own post cause like where is her signature snark?)
And if they would have just said, "what's happening in the south isn't important to what you're doing." Would have been better than, "yeah lol sorry pretty much every character and place you enjoyed in the previous game is probably dead now, whoops."

I think one of the main problems with even just the concept of Veilguard is that they wanted anyone to be able to pick it up without playing a DA game before. And everything came crumbling down from there.
Dragon Age as a concept works due to the lore, not despite of it. Whenever I talk about da with people who've never played it. I basically have to start from the begining and explain everything. What are Grey Wardens? Whats the Blight? Mages and Templars? The Chantry? Ect.
Making the 4th game of an ongoing series/story a new starting point for new players was never going to work. Taking out most of the lore and leaving you with whats a generic fantasy game with the DA name on it. But still including enough terms from the previous titles to where they had to add a glossary in it. Which doesnt really get into depth about anything mentioned.
Ive had this thought in my head for a while and hopefully my point came across. Sorry if not, just rambling into the void.

Just a reminder that you can be cricitcal of datv without being racist,transphobic,and/or mysoginistic. There are plenty actual criticisms that you can make without being a jerk. Thank you.
