After McKayla moved in with Tatiana, she started going through her things and packing things away or making piles of things to get rid of or donate. She didn't have a ton of things anymore after she sold her place in Northwood Lake. When she first moved to Timber Valley, she had minimal furniture and even less when she moved to Spring Rock. Thankfully, the townhouse had come furnished, which helped. It was things she didn't have to bring with her when she moved back to Timber Valley with Tatiana. She still wanted to get things in order and pack some things away and label them for if she moved again. With how serious she and Levi were becoming, she figured another move wasn't far away, but she would handle that when the time came.
As she went through her things, she found an envelope that had been sealed. Her face showed confusion as she looked at it, turning it over in her hand to see a name on the front. McKenna. She let out a sigh as she thought back on when she wrote this. she had forgotten all about it. She had a hard time dealing with her death and one of the things she had tried was writing her a letter. She wasn't so sure it had helped since she still struggled with it from time to time, but maybe it had. She slowly slipped her finger into the flap, peeling it open to pull the letter out, curious what it was she had written her baby sister, all those years ago.
Dear Kenna. I don't even know how to start this. You aren't here anymore and I don't know if I can stand it. Nothing feels right anymore. You're gone, Kenzie left town. I feel so alone without you guys here. Even when you thought I was mad or didn't like you, trust me, I always did. I always loved you and would have done anything for you. I'll never forget being called to the hospital and seeing you on that table. Touching your cold skin and thinking how could this be real? I'm not okay, and I don't know if I ever will be. I went and did something bad that night and I can't take it back, but it felt good. It felt good getting my anger and frustration out in a destructive way. I know it isn't healthy, but fuck, Kenna. I don't know how to do this. I have a lot of issues to deal with and I really just don't know how I'm gonna do it without you here. I love you so much, little sis. Kay.
She felt a tear roll down her cheek as she folded the letter back up, sniffing as she wiped the tear from her face. Kay stuffed the letter back into the envelope and put it back in the box she found it in. There was so much she still wanted to tell Kenna, like the things that had happened in her life,  how Kenzie and Avery were finally together, and how Kay had finally found happiness with Levi. She wondered if Kenna would have someone and if the Winters sisters could all be happy together, but that was something Kay and Kenzie would never know. All they could know now was being happy together, without their baby sister there with them.
Getting up from the floor, Kay sat down at the desk in her room, pulled out a notebook and pen. She stared at the blank paper for a few moments, gathering her thoughts and wondering if this was a good idea. Would this just open old wounds or would this actually help her? The least she could do was try, right? It couldn’t hurt just trying to see if it worked. Letting out a sigh, she put the pen to the paper and began to write.
Kenna, It's been 5 years since you left us and so much has changed since then. Kenzie and Avery are finally together for the long run, and I'm so happy about it. I've gone through a rollercoaster ride when it comes to relationships, but I'm finally in a really good one that makes me super happy. I think you'd like him. He sings and he makes really good beer, not that you drank beer, but I feel like once you were old enough, you would have and you would have enjoyed it. You just seemed like the type of girl that would enjoy a good beer. I still miss you and still have an ache in my heart for you, but I know you're okay. I'll never stop missing you or wishing you were here, but I just have to keep moving forward to keep from being consumed by the darkness. I love you so much, little red. Kay.
Letting out a deep sigh, she folded the new letter up, finding an envelope on her desk and stuffing the letter inside, writing her sister's name on the front before sealing it and moving from her chair to put the letter in the box with the old one. Maybe writing her letters did help in a way, maybe it didn't. But maybe she would start doing it regularly and see how it worked. It was the least she could do to try and get through the heartache she still felt for her sister. She knew she would never get over it, but maybe she could dull the pain.

The Fire
McKayla held an empty gas can in her hand, staring at the building before her the flames began to engulf it. It felt therapeutic to watch the old structure be consumed by cleansing fire. This was exactly what she needed to get her anger and frustration out. When Mckenna died, she blamed herself for not being there enough, not trying hard enough to get her away from Dr. Ryan and his brainwashing, and from their grandparents pushing treatment on Mckenna and Mackenzie. At least Kenzie was smart enough to get out of town and away from the situation. Kay was so busy trying to keep her grades up to graduate college that she didn’t spend enough time helping Mckenna.
A single tear rolled down her cheek as she slowly felt her pain burning away with the building before her. In all the years she grew up in Hartsville, she never remembered this building being inhabited. Setting fire to it wouldn’t harm anyone, but rid the town of a run-down building...until she saw the shape of a person in one of the windows. Her heart sank and nausea consumed her. Someone was inside. The figure looked to be surrounded by flames, making them just a silhouette, but she could hear their screams. The sound of sirens in the distance brought her back to the reality that she stood with an empty gas can in her hand.
===flashback===
Hearing her phone ring she swiped the screen to answer the call. "Hello?" There was silence for a moment but she could hear their breathing. "Hello??" She asked again before the person on the other line finally spoke. "Uh, Miss Winters?" The voice sounded so unsure about making this phone call. "This is McKayla Winters. Is this the Miss Winters you were trying to reach?" She asked. The woman on the other end cleared her throat before responding. "Yes ma'am. Um. I don't know how to tell you this, but your sister, McKenna, we have her at the hospital right now." Kay could feel the color drain from her body. "What happened?" She asked frantically as she gathered her things to leave for the hospital. "It's best you come to the hospital so we can talk.
Coming into the parking lot sideways, Kay roughly parked her SUV before jogging into the hospital. "I'm here for my sister! McKenna Winter?!" People looked around at her like she was crazy before a nurse came to her. "Ma'am, we spoke on the phone, I need you to come with me." She took her back through double doors and down a hallway to a more quiet and private waiting room. "What the hell is going on?" Kay asked as the woman finally stopped and turned to her. "Miss Winters. We responded to a call earlier...Your sister, she was receiving treatment from Dr. Ryan?" Kay nodded her head. "It appeared to have been some sort of..suicide pack? They all drank something that had poison in it. Your sister was still alive when we arrived on the scene, but." She let out a sigh. "The poison did a number on her brain and we weren't able to do anything to reverse the effects."
The sounds around her and the sound of the woman's voice seemed to fade as her world became blurry. She found herself on the floor of the waiting room, feeling like she couldn't breathe. There was no way this woman just told her Kenna was dead. Kenna couldn't be dead. This couldn't be real. Looking up at the woman, she felt the tears falling down her face, the wetness of them. "Can I see her?" The woman nodded. After helping her from the floor, the woman took her down another set of halls before they came to a room where her sister lay on a table with her eyes closed. She looked so peaceful. Walking in she came up to her side, bringing her hand to rest on her forehead, brushing at her hair. "I'm sorry" She whispered to her baby sister.
========
Looking back at the burning house and hearing the screams still coming from the house, McKayla let out a sigh before running to get in her SUV. She couldn't get caught doing this, but she needed to do this. She needed to get her feelings out somehow and words weren't how she did that. Though she had a way with words, when it came to expressing her feelings, not so much. She quickly put the SUV in reverse, backing up as quick as she could before throwing it into drive and peeling out. Keeping her headlights off until she knew she was fast enough that the approaching emergency services wouldn't see her.

That voice in your head.
When McKayla got kidnapped back in December, she never thought her life would be okay again. She honestly thought she would die in the Nevada desert and never be seen again, but that wasn't what happened at all. Here she was living a wonderful life, but with some dark edges. She had a boyfriend that loved her, and her sister was in her life more, she had new friends. Things were going great. Mr. Haywood hadn't called upon her on in a while which was surprising. The last time she had been to the funeral home was to help with a clean-up for her best friend. There was no way she was letting her best friend get caught and offered to clean up the mess for her.
That night was something else all together, when she got the phone call and showed up, she never expected to see the body of a man in the back alley with her best friend losing her shit about it. She didn't even question her, she just went to work on cleaning up her mess. It took a while before Tatiana even asked questions. They were halfway to the funeral home before she even mentioned anything. Of course, her reaction to everything was less than quiet and Kay had to snap her out of it quick, which she still thought back on and hoped Tatiana wasn't mad that she slapped her in the face.
After she dropped off the body with Haywood's men, the drive home was when things changed. Tatiana finally asked in detail how the fuck Kay could do all of that so well and so calmly. The truth is, if it weren't for Alex, McKayla would never be like this. Never would have known all of this. Alex not only was a good teacher but a good friend. One that understood this wasn't an easy life, but he was there for her. The drive home was when she explained to Tatiana about Alex. This was certainly a conversation she never thought she would be having.
------The Return to Hartsville------
After McKayla returned to Hartsville from Nevada, everyone looked at her differently. By now, the whole town had heard about her being kidnapped, but she didn't really share a lot of details. It wasn't like she could tell the truth anyway, so most of it was fabricated and worked out between her, David Haywood, and Alex Lancaster. Yes, she had been kidnapped, but everything else was basically a lie. Upon her return, Alex joined her to stay close and help her with her new assignment. They were to continue working as a team as they had in Nevada, which McKayla was fine with because she liked Alex. He was a nice guy and easy to talk to and had become her friend.
Not long after they returned, Mr. Haywood called upon them to do a job for him. It was right outside Hartsville, as he kept most of his jobs outside the town limits. Alex and McKayla were to do something similar to their first outing together. Target a couple and take them out. It wasn't like they were killing innocent people. The people chosen were horrible individuals. People that did the world wrong and wouldn't be missed if they were gone. This couple had been posing as home health nurses and robbing the sick, elderly patients. Killing them was something McKayla could get behind.
As Alex and Kay entered the club together, they stayed close as they looked for their targets. It didn't take them long to find them and the two of them started their routine. He worked the woman while she worked the man. They made sure to stay where they could see each other. Everything was going how it should. They got them to each leave with them, and they both dispatched them in the dark alley behind the club. As they worked to get their bodies into his SUV, McKayla had a moment where things really hit her. They had done several jobs together and she didn't feel bad, but something in this moment made her feel horrible for what they had done and she stopped, her breath catching as she looked up at Alex.
"What the fuck are we doing?" She stepped back from the SUV, running her fingers up into her hair as she gripped at it. "W-what are we doing?! How can we do this so easily like it's nothing? Alex, how did we become these people?" Her breathing was increasing as his features softened and he came to her, bringing his hands out to gently hold her shoulders, rubbing slowly up and down her arms. "Hey...I get it, it is hard to stomach sometimes, and I understand, trust me. But just remember, these are bad people and we are helping by doing this. We are making it so they don't hurt anyone else, and in turn, their bodies can help someone else." She took deep breaths as he spoke to her, nodding her head. "I know Alex, but it's just.. I don't know. I feel like I'm losing my conscious and it comes in waves and it's like I need someone to be that for me." He gave her a warm smile and nodded. "You need someone.  Let me be that person.  Let me be what you need...I can be that voice of reason in your head when you don't think it's there anymore. I promise, Kay. I promise I'll be here for you."

Drabble (316)
The music festival this year had already been such a blast. It was exactly what McKayla needed to get her mind off things and just let go and have fun and be free. To forget about her adult obligations, to forget about what went on in her head and in her heart, she could just have fun and be McKayla. The atmosphere alone just puts you in a different mood. It was wild and free and made you feel like you could run like a wild horse in a field and no one would ever try and tame you. And all the amazing bands and singers and the performances they put on for everyone, were incredible. Though she got to see a lot of artists she has been super excited about, nothing prepared her for the excitement that came Tuesday when her own boyfriend took the stage to perform.
As she stood in the crowd, close to the stage per request, McKayla watched as Levi took the stage and her heart swelled with pride. He had told her that he missed the music life and wanted to get back into things but wasn't sure he could. She could see in his eyes when he told her that. just how much he did miss it but was hesitant to go back to it. She would never forget when he sat across from her in his living room and sang to her, how happy he seemed, how emotional he got as he sang. She could see how much he loved it and on top of it, he was good at it. So, to see him on this stage, her heart was so full of pride and joy for him taking this step back in the direction he wanted to go.
Tatiana stood beside her, wrapping her arms around her to pull her close. Looking at her friend, she knew that she had known about this. Levi had to tell her. He had set this up to have McKayla close to the stage and have Tatiana there with her. The smile that came over her face was something she couldn't try and hide even if she wanted to. She turned to look back up as Levi got settled with his guitar. Her arms slowly took hold of Tatiana as she felt her whole body get weak. She felt nervous for him, but at the same time, every inch of her was proud. And then, his eyes met hers. The look he gave her could have melted her into a puddle on the ground. A smile came to his face as his fingers came to rest on the strings while the other hand took hold of the pick and began to strum the melody.
Tumblr media
McKayla felt like everything around them vanished. She could feel Tatiana holding her, but it was just her and Levi, and he was singing to her. His eyes didn't leave hers and she didn't dare look away. Her heart felt as if it would explode out of her chest while she watched as he played the melody and leaned forward to let his beautiful voice fall into the microphone. She knew if her best friend hadn't been holding her, that she would have fallen to the ground. Her legs felt weak as she listened to him and watched every emotion that came over his features. His eyes only left hers when he closed them. At this moment is when she realized his dream was coming true. He was going to get back into it. His confidence on stage right now was proving that to her. The way his voice carried the emotions and the feelings of the song, told her it was happening...and she got to be here for it.
Tumblr media
Forget all the other artists she had been excited to see and meet. This moment made everything else worthless in comparison. This was her favorite artist and she would forever fangirl over him when he performed. That was her guy. She was so proud she couldn't stand it. They may not have been together long, but the conversations they had and the time spent together made her forget about any timeline. The timeline be damned. She was one of his biggest fans and would support him if this is what he wanted to do. When he finished, she let go of Tatiana, unaware she had been holding her so tight. Her hands came together, clapping as hard as she could as she jumped up and down, screaming for him, all the while, his eyes never left him. She could see the slight red come to his cheeks as he turned to exit the stage.
It felt like forever before he finally emerged to find her waiting for him. She jogged to him, closing the distance quicker as she threw her arms around his neck, holding him tightly as she smiled against his shoulder. "I'm so fucking proud of you baby! You did so damn good!" She pulled back enough to look at him, the smile on his face and the spark in his eyes. "Chris Stapleton just told me he wants to help me get back into it...he wants to sing with me on a song, Kay!" Her eyebrows rose as her face showed excitement and wonder. "Oh my god! Are you serious?!" She pulled him back into a tight hug, lifting up on her tiptoed as she held him close to her. After a moment, she pulled back, bringing one of her hands to rest on his cheek. "I told you that you could get it back. I knew you could." She chuckled as she felt tears in her eyes. "God, I'm so fucking proud of you."

How it all happened (past)
September 2021
A lot had changed in McKayla's life lately. A whole new chapter seemed to be beginning for her. McKayla wanted to start fresh and reinvent herself. She left her job with the fire department, starting at the Wings of Liberty Flight School and Air Field. She would still have her hand in public relations, helping run their social media, keeping up with paperwork for everything flight coming and going at the airfield. Proctoring written exams for the pilots and whatever else they needed her to do. The fire department just wasn't somewhere she could stay anymore. After some things happened, she kist didn't feel like it was home anymore.
When she first saw the job listing,  she wondered if they needed an extra hand or if the previous position holder left the job from stress. In her interview, she had asked and had been told the preview holder had moved away, leaving the position open. Meaning she wouldn't be trained by someone that had done the job for years, she would be thrust into a new environment and learn a lot as she went. That was something she was confident she could do. What she wasn't prepared for was the confrontation that awaited her on her first day.
The day began like normal, giving her training videos to watch and material to read and go over. Growing up in this town, you know who people are even if you've never spoken to them. McKayla recognized David Haywood from the Haywood Funeral home. Curious as to why he was at the airfield, but it was none of her business until he made it her business.  "Good afternoon, Ms. Winters. How is the new job treating you?" She gave him a soft smile nodding. "Good afternoon, Mr. Haywood. So far so good. Just a lot of reading and watching videos today." She chuckled, making polite talk. "Ah, very good. Listen, do you have a moment to talk privately?" Her eyebrows furrowed in question at his comment. "Um, I suppose." She stood from her seat, walking around the desk, she followed him outside, glancing around to make sure someone saw her go outside with him.
As the door shut he turned to her, a devilish smile on his face. "Ms. Winters. You need to be aware of some things. If you're going to be working here, dealing with the paperwork of everything, I'm going to need you in my pocket." Her face showed nothing but confusion. "Uh, I don't think I understa-" "Don't interrupt me." She shut her mouth quickly as his words came out sternly. "I have a little business that I run through here. I'm going to need you to keep your damn mouth shut and do as you're told. You will file the papers as you are told and not ask questions. And before you protest.." His grin became more sinister. "I know what you did....4 years ago." Her eyes widened. How could he know that? He was bluffing. He had to be. "Ohh, girl. You have no idea what I know. I know you set that fire to the old Walker house. I know you killed the man inside." She felt her heart rate increasing, the pit in her stomach opening. "Now, you may be wondering how I know this. Well, don't think you were chosen for an interview based solely on your skills. No. I have been using this airfield for a while. I practically own them. They sent me a list of who applied and I did my research to see who I could blackmail to do what I wanted. You just happen to have some things in your life that piqued my interest. Now, if you do as you are told, I will keep this little secret...if you don't, well, I'll make sure you and you suffer immensely." At this point, there wasn't an ounce of color left in her face, simply nodding in answer. "Good girl. Have a good first day." He turned to walk away before pausing, turning back with a sly grin. "If that isn't enough...the man that had your job didn't move away, we will leave it at that." And with that, Mr. Haywood was gone.
All she could think about for the rest of the day was the conversation. Maybe this hadn't been the best idea to take this job, but she certainly couldn't quit now. He would surely come after her for that. Making it through the rest of the day, it was a blessing to finally leave. She needed to talk to someone about this, but who the hell could she tell? For all she knew, he had everything bugged and was listening to everything she said. It was best to bury this information and suffer alone...for now.

The first kill. (past)
After putting the safety nest in place, McKayla made her approach to the funeral home. She had papers in her hands to show proof of his dirty deeds to use over his head. She entered the funeral home, making her way to the back where she was instructed his office was. As she approached the door, she heard what sounded like a heated conversation on the other side of the door. When she knocked, the voices stopped for a moment before calling her in.
Opening the door she saw a man in the room with Mr. Haywood. Her eyes scanned the room before landing on the man for a moment. "Ah. Miss Winters. What can I do for you today?" Her attention was brought back to Mr. Haywood, clearing her throat. "Um. I came here to talk to you about our....arrangement." She waved the papers in front of her. "I have my own proof and I want to make my own deal." His eyes narrowed on her before glancing at the man beside him.  "What do you want, McKayla?" His voice sounded different now. Harsher. "What I want is a cut of this shit. If I'm going to be involved then let me in." He smirked at her for a moment in silence before nodding. "You can be cut in if you do a job for me...I need you to kill a man and bring him back to me. Then you can be let in."
Her eyes widened at the thought of killing someone. "Kill someone? I've never..." He held his finger up to her, wagging it. She had killed someone before and he knew that. But she didn't plan to do that and didn't do it on purpose. "I've never done it on purpose. I don't even know what to do." Mr. Haywood looked to the man beside him, McKayla's eyes followed. "Kingston...could you help Miss. Winters?"
-------
Tumblr media
This wasn't what she planned for or wanted. This wasn't how things were supposed to go, but here she was. She found herself in the back room of the funeral home with a black garbage bag on the ground beside her. "Ah, Miss Winters. I assume that lump is what I asked for?" Her face splattered with blood, if you looked in her eyes you would see her somewhere else. Anywhere else but there. She slowly nodded as she brought the back of her hand to wipe her face. David Haywood clicked his tongue at her with a smirk on his face. "Did you make a mess? How did you do it? Tell me all the juicy details, darling." She snapped her eyes back to him as her brows furrowed. "The details of what happened are sketchy so I'm going to get to the bottom of it... The man is dead and now I want my cut. You agreed if I did this for you I could be cut in on things." She held her hand out, waiting for what she earned.
Mr. Haywood laughed at her. She pulled her hand back to herself, resting it on her hip as she looked at him with a scowl on her face. "What the fuck is so funny?" He let his laugh simmer down to a light chuckle as he looked at her. "Did you really believe it would be that simple? No darling. You are mine now." Tossing her a burner phone that she quickly caught, looking down at it before back at him with confusion on her face. "I own you now. Anytime I need this done, I'll contact you and you will do as you're told. I will pay you but this is the only way you are being cut in on this deal. And if you wish to walk away, well..." One of his men handed him a folder which he opened to show her a photo of her stuffing the man into the trash bag. "I will always win Miss Winters."
Driving home, her mind was racing with what had happened that night. As she pulled up to the house, she sat in the SUV with the engine cut off. How was she going to tell explain all of this? This wasn't how it was supposed to go...but something inside of her almost *liked* it. What was wrong with her? How could she like killing someone on purpose?

Drabble Day (Love Isn’t Fair)
Things had been hard lately. On Valentine's Day, McKayla and Aiden had moved into a townhouse in Spring Rock. They were ready to start this new adventure together and McKayla had never been so happy in her whole life. Aiden was her person and she knew that. He was everything she ever hoped to have in someone. Things were great. She was helping him with his PTSD and he was helping her with her abandonment issues. He had lost one of his best friends recently after they had deployed overseas again, and that really got to him, he was worried he would be called back, and honestly, Kay was nervous about that too. She didn't know how she would be able to handle that if it happened, but she told him she would be there no matter what happened. And then it did. What they hoped wouldn't happen, did. Aiden got orders to deploy overseas again. They barely had time together to get their new home set up before Aiden was gone.
McKayla never thought that would be the last time she held him or kissed him. She never really thought she would lose him. But it wasn't long after his deployment that she was informed his unit went missing and was presumed dead. It's been months and there has still been no word of what happened. She can't even begin to count how many times she has cried, laid in bed holding his shirt, and stared at the wall because no more tears would fall from her eyes. They had talked about being endgame and having kids together one day. They had talked about how they would be weird parents and how it would be a blast doing it together. How they wanted to travel together before settling down and getting married. Now, none of that would ever happen. The time she opened her heart wide open for someone and now she lay in bed wondering what the point of it all was.
She spent weeks in bed, only going to work and coming home to lay in silence as she tried to comprehend what happened. The playlist she made for him was something she had a hard time even bringing up,  She wanted to hear their song, but anytime she tried to, the tears started again. She didn't know how much more she could cry before her body would give out. She had never felt like this before in her life. Sure, she had felt pain when she realized her parents didn't give a shit about her, but she had never felt like this over a man. Then again, she had never loved someone like this before. It made her wonder why she even let herself love in the first place if she was just going to get hurt.  Love isn't fair...
If it weren't for her best friend, Tatiana, McKayla would still be wallowing at home in her own misery. But Tatiana had pulled her to Costa Rica and told her she needed to start to move on. She couldn't live like this forever. And so she did. She began the process of moving on. Is it hard? Of course, it is. Having to come home from that amazing trip and still see his things in their home. She finally packed them all away in boxes, stacking them in a closet. But things still felt weird. Part of her didn't even want to live in that townhouse anymore. It was something they had gotten together and now it felt like something was missing. She had moved several times over the past year, but maybe it was time to make another move. Maybe staying here was hurting her progress towards healing.
She needed to move on and she knew that, and she was working on it. It hurt her to try and leave it all behind, but she knew if she didn't she would drown in her own misery. Moving on was the healthy choice for her. Thinking back, she knew Aiden was her person. But, it made her wonder if, in life, we can have more than one soulmate. She was his soulmate for his life, and now that he was gone, perhaps it was time she found the one that would be her's until her death. Is that how this worked? It was certainly a thought. A way to get through things. The only thing she could do was try. But she would always think those words... Love isn't Fair...
