One thing about MASH is that after Wayne Rogers left they didn’t reshoot the intro and instead just cut around him and add BJ in. This means that while Trapper cannot be seen in the intro, his shadow remains visible in the shot where the jeeps carrying wounded are moving downhill

re: the scene where betty shoots the birds
it's obviously an iconic scene, but there's so much more to it than meets the eye, and i feel like we overlook the second meaning of that scene because we'd find less cause to celebrate. on one hand, yes, it is cathartic to watch betty finally unleash all of her pent up anger in a violent way. but on the other hand, the symbolism of that scene is actually quite sad.
the episode begins with betty admiring birds flying. betty, who is herself associated with birds ("birdie") by the narrative. this is also the episode where she gets the first opportunity to go back to work and become financially independent again. freedom. flying bird. the actual birds appear to precede every scene that develop the saga of betty and her new/old job. birds fly before she's presented with the opportunity. a bird gets hurt by the dog before betty gets the opportunity snatched away from her. betty herself shoots the birds right after she contents with being a housewife. her shooting the birds is symbolic of her burying her dreams and aspirations and fully accepting her role as a financially dependent woman. a trapped woman. that bird will fly no more. it's dead.

i love how these guys really would have watched a three hour long movie sitting on these chairs like some elementary school kids at a classroom screening 😭
they fr just give me the vibe of overgrown kids so often 😭 also how everyone is like *what is your favorite scene* as if they probably haven’t talked about this a million times already…
