The Dyatlov Pass Incident

In the northern Ural Mountains in the Soviet Union, 9 hikers mysteriously died between February 1 and February 2, 1959. During the middle of the night, something forced the hikers to tear out of their tents and run away from their campsite practically unclothed. The group seemingly had no regard for the heavy snowfall and subzero temperatures they had previously set out in.

After the bodies were found, it was determined that six of them had died from hypothermia; however, three of them showed signs of a physical struggle. One of them had a fractured skull, two of them had fractured ribs and, bizarrely, one of them was missing their eyes and tongue. The case was closed after local authorities chalked up the incident to an “unknown compelling force.”

After he was caught on July 22nd 1991 the police discovered body parts, bones, and corpses of 11 people in his apartment. They also found all kinds of knives and sawblades, a hypodermic needle, an electric drill, a 57 gallon blue plastic drum with three decomposing torsos inside and photographs of his mutelited victims.

Evidence found: a small blood stain (Type A-positive, Lynda’s type) on her pillow and bottom sheet, and another blood stain on a nightgown that was found neatly hung up in her closet.

Missing: her top bed sheet, a red decorative satin pillowcase, her red knapsack and a change of clothes.

The initial conclusion was that Lynda had suffered a late-night nosebleed and had gone somewhere to have it attended to. Because the idea of a late night intruder seemed farfetched at the time, police did not dust the room for fingerprints, process it for hair/fiber evidence, or test a semen stain found on her sheet.

It wasn’t until nearly two months later when Donna Manson seemingly vanished from Evergreen State College (60 miles south of Seattle) that police began connecting disappearances. 

Her partial remains were later discovered at the Taylor Mountain Site along with those of Brenda Ball, Susan Rancourt, and Roberta Parks. (x)
